Hi Lisa, You can omit it; the vegetable shortening helps to keep the chocolate thin for dipping and coating things. I find that sometimes the chocolate is too thick without it, but you could certainly still do it.

I would love to make these for New Year’s but the only ingredient I am missing is vegetable shortening. Is there anything I can use in place of the vegetable shortening? I would rather not go out and buy it because there are no other dishes I would use it in, but these look so good that I may just give in!!

Wow! These are fantastic! Thanks for such a great idea. I live in South America and marshmallows are only available once a year. I had a bag of strawberry flavored ones stashed away (they don’t ever come plain here for some reason). I think the milk chocolate I could find wasn’t very good, either, but I did my best. Even if they weren’t pretty, they sure were tasty! haha! Thanks!!

Hi Jessie, These bars are a definite favorite, I’m glad you and your coworkers enjoyed them too! Thanks also for the tip on the extra chocolate chips; I think sometimes it depends on how big they are cut, how thick the chocolate is, how much you let drip off, etc.

I brought these to a work potluck today. All afternoon coworkers were stopping me in the hall to say how amazing they were. I can not recommend this recipe enough.

One tip: I wasn’t able to coat all 36 squares with one bag of milk chocolate chips. I ended up having to use an additional half of bag of chips.

I made the marshmallow crunch brownies! (2nd time in two days)
I LOVE that topping! It smells AMAZING as it melts together. AND NOW I can make make the topping itself to enjoy this way too!

Oh, this totally makes me think of the holidays — my mom makes something like this every year, in a ball shape. She just uses a little cookie scoop to form the crisps before dipping in chocolate!
