I think you all are very well aware that I absolutely adore all things butter, sugar and chocolate. You may also have noticed that there aren’t healthy substitutes on this site, such as butter substitutes, using applesauce in place of oil, or Splenda instead of sugar. There is a very good reason for that – I simply don’t believe in it! I believe in the pure enjoyment of delicious desserts made from natural, high-quality ingredients that bring out the best flavors in a dessert. I’ve been asked how it’s possible that I’m not severely overweight since I do so much baking and run this website. Well, another thing I believe in is moderation. It all boils down to this – if you want to eat dessert, I believe you should eat the best dessert you can afford, health-wise. Whether it be a luxurious piece of dark chocolate, a chocolate chip cookie or a piece of cheesecake. If I’m craving chocolate, a fat-free, sugar-free pudding cup probably isn’t going to cut it, but a 1-ounce piece of smooth chocolate very likely will. Where am I going with this? While my philosophy is not to bow to substitutes to make yourself feel better about eating dessert, I don’t necessarily eschew making things that are naturally good for you either.
So, what is the secret ingredient in these brownies? White whole wheat flour.
How am I not a hypocrite? Using white whole wheat flour is an attempt add something to the diet (whole grain) as opposed to taking things away and replacing them with lower-quality ingredients that can compromise the final product.
You may have heard me mention from time to time the various ingredients and equipment that I purchase from King Arthur Flour. I am a big fan of the company and have always had positive experiences with their service and products. As a result, I wanted to share a bit of King Arthur Flour with all of you. I contacted a very nice lady there who was thrilled to share some King Arthur goodies with Brown Eyed Baker readers. She mentioned that the most popular products right now are the white whole wheat flour and their new cookbook, Whole Grain Baking. She offered me an opportunity to try both and to give away one of each to a lucky reader!
Now you know I would never promote a product or even a recipe that I wasn’t fully in love with, so after spending a lot of time reading through the cookbook, I decided to give these brownies a try. Full disclosure here – I was admittedly nervous. I really don’t do wheat anything (big shock, right?). If wheat bread is the only type in the house I might eat a sandwich on it. But it can’t be heavy, it has to be a light bread. And I really won’t like it, I’ll just force it down so I don’t pass out from hunger. Imagine my shock when I took these brownies out of the oven, let them cool for a bit and then tasted them – they were absolutely wonderful! The recipe suggests letting these sit overnight before cutting and eating them, as this gives the bran in the wheat time to relax and “meld” into the other flavors so that it’s not noticeable. Well, no one I know ever makes brownies with the intention of waiting until the next day to eat them. Brownies are usually an “I’m craving it NOW!” type of food and waiting until tomorrow just won’t cut it. So, I took one for the team and ate one as soon as they were cool enough to cut. They have a great texture (think thick and fudgy), a fantastically deep chocolate flavor, and the characteristic shiny crisp top layer. And as a bonus – they didn’t have a hint of wheat flavor.
Now that you have a better-for-you brownie recipe, let’s get on with the giveaway!

This is such an awesome giveaway as I have the book and absolutely love it. As for my favorite brownie recipe – I’m not a brownie girl but loved a Mexican Brownie recipe from Aaron Sanchez found on foodnetwork.com. (I already follow you on twitter and will deifnitely be passing this along)
My favorite recipe is the One Bowl Brownie recipe that’s on the boxes of Baker’s unsweetened chocolate. But I will probably try this recipe if I get some of the flour.
i’m not a big fan of brownies, but son absolutely love it…. i don’t have a favorite recipe for it..he will basically eat anything chocolate
I used to make these fantastic Snickers brownies as a kid for all types of functions- church potlucks, family get-togethers, you name it. They were AWESOME.
I make brownies from scratch or from a mix. Then before I bake them I swirl raspberry jam in!!! Really good.
My favorite brownie would definitely be the double fudge brownie that has chocolate chips in it AND hot fudge swirled on top. Serve with ice cream and I’m in heaven!
This is a great post! I have to admit that before going vegan I would enjoy Ghiradelli Double Chocolate Brownies. Since being vegan (just 4 months) I have not tried my own recipe! I would love to win this giveaway. noellsky@gmail.com

Unfortunately I am on vacation right now, so I cannot share my favorite recipe, but it came from a cookbook put out by Australian Women’s Weekly called ‘Biscuits and Slices’ and was given to my family by some guests (from Australia, of course) around 20 years ago. The recipe involved melting chocolate bars instead of using cocoa powder and that is what I feel gave it a really rich taste.
But I also like trying to sneak healthy things into food (without affecting the taste–taste is paramount!) and in December I tried a beetroot brownie recipe posted on The Guardian which turned out pretty well although more like a moist cake than a brownie. (My notes state that the flavor improved over time and a milk chocolate might be better than dark.) The link for that recipe is: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2008/nov/08/chocolate-fruit-brownies-recipe
My husband really is the brownie king of the house and he just uses a box. Occasionally I will make them from scratch but I am more of a cookie person!

Now THAT”s how you do a brownie photo. Fabulous! I love Alice Medrich’s cocoa brownies and the triple chocolate brownies from Baking Illustrated.
I recently made Ina Garten’s Outrageous brownies and they were delicious! But I’ll take any brownie as long as there is chocolate!

Ghiradelli mix is DEFINITELY the way to go. I do occasionally add crunchy peanut butter instead of oil, to give the brownies an extra yummy crunch and flavor. They’re so rich and gooey!

My favorite brownies are homemade, fudgy, and served with a heaping scoop of ice cream. Mmmm. I have some cream cheese brownies in my fridge that I made this weekend. I think they are calling my name!
Those brownies look soooo amazing! The chocolate is oozing
One of my favorite brownies is Ina Garten’s Outrageous brownies, but I plan to try out several more recipes (including this one). I’ve wanted to incorporate white whole wheat flour into my cooking and baking.

I always feel like I am cheating when I make them, but I simply cannot find a brownie recipe that I love more than Ghiradelli brownie mix! I’ve tried and tried to find one better, but alas, I’m in love. I would love the opportunity to test out more brownie recipes with some King Arthur Flour though…!
My new favorite is Nutella Brownies, but I can’t recall meeting a brownie that I didn’t like! : – )
I don’t know where the recipe came from, but it’s a recipe for Mexican chocolate brownies with a caramel-y brown butter icing. It’s to die for. Either that or cakey brownies with orange zest-spiked ricotta cheese swirled in.
Cheers,
*Heather*

My fav brownie is Betty Crocker out of the box and I add an extra egg to make them more cake like!
I am a HUGE brownie fan! I find that most recipes are too sweet and contain too little chocolate. I just tried the “Baked” brownie and thought it was pretty delish.
I usually up the chocolate and reduce the sugar!
Oooo me wanty! My husband loves brownies so much he requested them for his birthday this year, and if I could sneak some whole grains into that without him being the wiser, I’d love it!
My favorite brownies are made from a dark choclate brownie mix. I add lots of pecan or walnuts depending on what I have on hand.

My favorite brownies are super easy and my moms go to dessert. Take any brownie recipe (she usually just uses a store brand box mix) make as directed. Then at the last few mins put unwrapped York peppermint patties all over, put back in oven then pull out and spread, let cool to harden. Then eat and eat!
I have an incredible, fudgey, dense, lovely brownie recipe that knocks the socks off of anyone that tries them. I’m famous for them, but it’s the one recipe I refuse to share. They’re my favorite because they’re easy and luscious without being too fussy in their preparation. My husband calls them atomic bombs of chocolate.

While I love your recipes, and agree that the occasional indulgence is better than degrading a recipe with substitutions… have you ever considered scaling down your recipes to make one, two or four servings, so those of us who are a) single or b) lacking in self-control can indulge?

i like martha stewart’s double chocolate brownies!
After the birth of my first child my parents came to visit. They would wander around town and bring us treats from the local bakeries. The best brownies came from The Bread and Butter Bakery. They called them a Brownie Cobbler; an unbelievably thick, rich brownie with a perfect ratio of nuts that begs to be washed down with a tall glass of cold milk. And oh boy, did they ever hit the spot in the wee hours of the night/morning with a newborn.
I love a good fudgy brownie.
Ohh I love brownies. Traditionally I use box mixes, but with this recipe, I may try them from scratch!!
I love peppermint brownies, just throw in some mint chips into the mix, and bake away. My favorite, now I want brownies.
Thanks a lot!
I won’t turn down even a boxed-mix brownies, but my favorite is to go to a potluck and see brownies with nuts on a plate. I never put nuts in brownies at home since hubby would be so disappointed.
Oh, I don’t have a favorite recipe yet (I still cook from the box for brownies most of the time…. ghiradelli). As long as it is a FUDGY brownie I am a happy girl.

Brownies with peanut butter chips are the best. Doesn’t matter if they come in a box or are made from scratch.
My favorite brownie is one I found in a book called Bake and Freeze Desserts (or maybe it was Bake and Freeze Chocolate Desserts) by Eleanor Klivens. They’re called White Chocolate Brownies with Cherry Cordials..a delicous, gooey white chocolate brownie with chocolate cherry cordials cut up and swirled into it. I even won a local chocolate bake-off with this recipe. SOOOO GOOD!!

My favorite brownie recipe is one I got from Epicurious, but completely overhauled to make it my own. I added and tweaked on numerous occasions to come up with THE perfect Marbled Cheesecake Brownies. The cheesecake layer is wonderful and light, and adds the perfect amount of creamy sweetness to the dark chocolate brownies. They are crowd pleasers every time, and so simple and fun to make!

My favourite recipe is an oldie I found online entitled “Easy Fudgy Brownies” (because I’m lazy). They’re perfectly chocolatey and fudgy and only use cocoa powder, so they’re quick and can be made in a pinch when there’s no solid chocolate on hand.

I love all brownies, but my favorite is this brownie that my neighbor brought to my house when I was growing up. She brought it for a BBQ he had. I swear, it was the best thing ever. It was so fudgy, it was almost like cake, yet chewy like a brownie. To this day I don’t know if it was homemade or from a box. But that is my perfect brownie: fudgy yet chewy. And with killer frosting on top.
I’m so excited about the idea of using white whole wheat flour—it’s my favorite flour to make bread with! My favorite brownies would be my mom’s cheesecake swirled brownies.

Ghiardelli box…I admit it. Perhaps because I haven’t really branched out…those are just so darn easy!
I just made a lg batch of brownies for Valentine Day. I used Cooks Illustrate brownie recipe that was in the newest CI mag. Loved the recipe! They were the best brownies I’ve ever made. They were soft, chocolatey, moist with that thin crunchy layer on the top. Yum! Would love to be in the drawing for the ckbk, www flour. BTW, I use the WWW flour to make my sourdough breads and in muffins all the time. I love the results.

Brownies are definitely a favorite dessert of mine. When I was in high school, I really enjoyed a store-bought kind (Betty Crocker, maybe???) that had Reese’s pieces in the mix. I’ve attempted homemade brownies once, and it was a disaster. I’m looking forward to trying these in the future.

Part is probably nostalgia, but also I find they’re the perfect level of richness and chocolatiness (is that a word?!) without being over-the-top rich. Following some health challenges this past year, we’re trying to change up our diet and this book would fit right in!

I have been making these brownies for years. A close friend gave me the recipe. They are best with mimi bits throughout and sprinkled on top. With vanilla ice cream And hot fudge sauce. http://robertapm28.blogspot.com/2008/09/baking-chocolate-brownies.html
I am a follower! Be great if you did the same!

Sometimes I think the box mix is hard to beat. I’m searching for my perfect go-to recipe but recently I made the brownies from the back of the Baker’s Chocolate box. They were delicious but very hard to slice. If you don’t mind eating chucks of brownie (and I don’t) they were fabulous.
Here is how I make my “fav” brownies… Hershey Syrup Brownie recipe topped (after brownies have cooled) with a generous layer of peanut butter and a layer of milk chocolate frosting (Pillsbury is best). Chocolatey, gooey and wonderful! Sll you need is a cold glass of milk.
I LOVE a fudgy brownie with a crackly top & Alice Medrich’s Bittersweet Brownies (from Pure Dessert) fit the bill.
Here in Canada I’m having a tough time finding the equivalent of King Arthur’s white whole wheat flour which is a flour I really want to try: if I can add in a little extra nutrition to Indulgent – without taking ANYthing away of what makes it so – then it’s having your cake (or brownie) & eating it too!
A drastically modified variation on Dorie Greenspan’s Quintuple Chocolate Brownies… Similar batter and techniqie, but no chunks or nuts, just a ton of coffee powder to complement a perfectly fudgy texture. Add a splash of kahlua and a swirl of cream cheese frosting spiked with kaluha too…perfection!
My alltime favorite brownies were nothing special ingredient-wise. I made them while living in Japan, and since the ingredients were shipped from the States, they were “real” brownies, something I just couldn’t get in Japan. Oh my goodness, it was like heaven melting in my mouth, even as basic as they were!
My favorite recipe is the Hershey’s recipe! I substitute chocolate chips for the nuts (not a fan of nuts in brownies). Love it!

I like to use just a cheap brownie mix ($1.00 on sale) I add coled coffee in place of the water and on top I like to swirl on melted caramel and toaster pecans after they have cooked and cooled a little. Sometimes I will add chocolate chips also to the batter.
I just found you on Facebook and have been getting your updates in my box for awhile now. I love King Arthur, would someday love to have the cookbook.
Am now following on twitter… (BrandiAM)
I love homemade brownies but must admit that I usually reach for a box or package mix because I am having one of those “gotta have it right now moments”. Most of the time I pour half of the mix in the pan then sprinkle chocolate chips or hershey with almonds candy and then pour the half of mix on top and bake. Always delicious!
I am an email subscriber. And I love KAF and use white whole wheat for most everything.
I love a smore’s brownie. I remember a favorite one that had graham crackers for crust, brownie layer, then you push in broken up Hershey bars, chunks of grahams and marshmallows til they toast. Yumm.
I don’t have a favorite brownie recipe. I do have one requirement though. I don’t like the brownies that are cakey and have icing on top. To me, that is just a really short cake!
I love cooking with whole wheat when it does not interfere with the taste of the recipe. I’m super excited to see a good whole grain brownie recipe. THANKS!
Oh and I totally subscribe to your feed! Wouldn’t miss an update!
I become a fan of Brown Eyed Baker on Facebook!
My favorite brownies are a recipe from my grandmother. They are thick and chewy with lots of chocolate chips in them. We love them frosted with chunks of crushed heath bar on top. My husband calls them “brownies on crack:)” Can’t wait to try this whole wheat recipe. Always looking for ways to make things healthier!
I shared your giveaway on my FB profile!
My favorite brownies would have to be from the Ghirardelli mix. They always come through for me!
And I follow you on Twitter- love the updates
oh, this looks awesome!! I love trying whole wheat but like you, I’m not a fan of the denseness it give. I like bread light and soft
but I’m willing to give it a try!!
I usually just make brownies out of a box….I know, i’m lazy
Triple Fudge Brownies – made with chocolate cake mix, chocolate pudding, and chocolate chips. So much chocolatey goodness!

my favorite brownie is from duncan hines box since it’s easy to make and always delicious. =)
My fav is still the one from the vintage Hershey’s syrup chocolate can. It’s not there anymore but I still have it & use it faithfully. Of course I’d love to try king arthur products!
My no-fail recipe is the Ghiradelli triple chocolate mix with either extra chocolate chips or peanut butter chips or reeses pieces added in to the mix. My family prefers them slightly underbaked, they are ridiculously good!
Am still on a quest for my favorite brownies. Because right now, they come from a box. And I am NOT a box kind of girl!
And I am a faithful google feed reader girl! Thanks for the giveaway!
Those brownies look soooo delicious! I’ve always wanted to make brownies from scratch…and someday I will! At the moment my favorite brownies would have the be the big box of Ghirardelli mix that they sell at Costco. There are 6 packets of brownie mix in that thing! I hope to someday move away from box mixes, but as a college student they are so quick and convenient!
When it comes to brownies I usually just buy Pillsbury box brownies. I love to bake but have not come across a brownie recipe that I loved. When I do make brownies I love to make a brownie sundae with mint chocolate chip ice cream and chocolate syrup drizzled on top.
Oh! and I’m also a subscriber to your RSS feed!

Fudgy Brownies
From the book The Essence of Chocolate by John Scharffenberger and Robert Steinberg
Yield 16 brownies
Introduction
In order to achieve the crackled top and fudgy texture of classic brownies, this batter must be beaten by hand until it pulls from the sides of the bowl. This sounds like a task, but it’s not; there’s something homey and satisfying about stirring this thick, glossy batter yourself.
Ingredients
6 Tbsp. (3 ounces) unsalted butter, cut into cubes, plus more for the pan
8 oz. 70-percent bittersweet chocolate
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
2 large eggs
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup toasted walnut halves (optional)
Steps
Position a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
Cut an 8-by-16-inch piece of parchment paper. Lightly butter an 8-by-8-by-2-inch pan and line it with the parchment, allowing it to extend evenly over the opposite sides. Butter the parchment, including the paper on the sides ofthe pan.
Place the chocolate and butter in a large heatproof bowl set over a pot of gently simmering water and stir occasionally until melted and smooth. Remove from the heat.
With a large rubber spatula or wooden spoon, beat the sugar and salt into the chocolate mixture. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Add the flour and mix vigorously until the batter is very glossy and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
Break the nuts, if using, into large pieces over the batter and fold them in.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and tap the pan bottom on the countertop to level the batter. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out moist but clean.
Let cool in the pan on a cooling rack for 10 minutes. Remove the brownies from the pan using the parchment “handles,” and cool completely on the rack before cutting into 2-inch squares.
I’ve always had problems with brownies but these look great. I’ll have to try this recipe.
Best brownie-Anyone with nuts on top!
My favorite brownie recipe is Ghirardelli’s recipe for Fudgy Brownies.
I already follow you on twitter and am a fan of you on Facebook.
Awesome giveaway! I’m originally from Norwich, VT (where K.A. is located), and I absolutely adore them! Such wonderful people and such great products.
Alas, my absolute favorite brownie resides in Brooklyn, far, far away from my home. All of their brownies are amazing, but I go for the sweet & salty brownie. It is killer. Laced with homemade caramel and fleur de sel, it is so soft and fudgy, I always want more than one! I have to get it to go, or else I’m afraid I would buy a dozen.
Can’t wait to try your new recipe!
any recipe with a lot of eggs, this makes it both rich and moist.
My favourite recipe is from the book ‘In the Mood for Food’ by Jo Pratt. They are super rich and have cherries in them……..love.
My favorite brownies are rum-frosted brownies: box brownies topped with rum/butter/confectioner’s sugar frosting, then a layer of bittersweet chocolate.
Cooks Illustrated has the best brownie recipe I have ever made.
I tweeted about this giveaway
My favorite brownies are Baker’s One Bowl Brownies, slightly undercooked to remain gooey.
I would love to get more recipes from King Arthur. Their products are great
I like to add an extra egg to brownie recipes to give it that nice cake like texture.

I was always a Betty Crocker Brownie Mix girl until I learned to make my own from scratch. Dorie’s brownies are good.
My favorite brownie recipe is a tweeked one out of Hershey’s Chocolate cookbook. It’s a failrly basic brownie recipe but I made them a little lighter by reducing the butter and using a Whey Low/stevia sugar mix. But then I counteracted that by added butterscotch chips
They’re delicious! Fudgey, rich, and plenty of flavors!
Oh, and these brownies look FANTASTIC. They may become my new favorites
I love boxed brownie mix. I bake everything from scratch and act like I am too good for boxed mixes… except brownie mix. We take two boxes and bake it in one 9×13 pan. They come out so gooey and chocolaty! I also love KA’s white whole wheat flour and use it all the time!
Hmm, would have to say my fave brownie is the one I made up for my recipe development class – it’s so rich but not super sweet!
my favorite brownies to make from a box are the chocolate turtle brownies by Ghirardelli. they’re quick and i know exactly what they’ll taste like each time. i love king arthur flour, and they’re cookie recipes have never let me down! fabulous giveaway!

I made some delicious Brownie Bites this weekend in a mini muffin pan. I put chocolate ganache on top of each “bite” & then sprinkled Valentine non-pareils. Everyone loved them! I’m also a big fan of KAF. In fact, two days ago I placed a large order that included a Thermapen. I can’t wait for the shipment to arrive!
Chocolate peanut butter brownies! A peanut butter crust of an egg, cup of PB and cup of sugar. Then I mix some chocolate chips and peanut chips into the brownie mix. Oh so rich, but oh so delicious!
I am not just saying this because it is this site, but my all time favorite brownie is the recipe you posted here a while back for Marshmallow Peanut Butter Crunch Brownies. Wow, those were dangerous to have in the house.

My favorite brownies are my adaptation of Dorie’s Tribute to Katharine Hepburn brownies. I’ve actually adapted them with many mix-ins, but I love the simple recipe (and I always leave out the cinnamon and coffee.) Fabulous fudgy brownies every time! I love KA, too. And now I NEED to try these brownies!

are my favorite! Nothing better than KAF’s fudgy brownies!
I don’t have a fave recipe for brownies but I do like Duncan Hines box brownie mix. They rarely last through the night.
My favorite brownie was the brownie that came at the bottom of a sundae at Macado’s, a restaurant back at college. Even though the sundae was huge, I always made room for the super fudgey delicious brownie. (now that I look back on it, i’m not certain that it was actually baked all the way through… not that that’s a bad thing in the least!)
The worst brownies I ever had were wonderful! Of course homemade brownies are sublime, but I will happily stuff my maw with brownies-from-a-box any night of the week!
And I subscribe through Google Reader — I’ve got a good many of your recipes starred and tagged and waiting for me to try them!

Ghirardelli’s Triple Chocolate brownies… from the mix at Costco *ducks underneath a table* A friend made them for the refreshment table at our Opera Scenes Workshop’s final performance last spring, and after I had a bite before going onstage (I was Menotti’s Amahl in the scene when the Three Kings arrive), I sang the scene the best I had ever done it.

My mom’s kitchen! Mom makes these great “heavenly brownies” topped with toasted marshmallows and homemade chocolate frosting. I’ve attempted them myself, but they never seem to be quite as good when I’m making them.
I’m not picky. It has to be the fudgiest, darkest chocolate brownie possible and I must have the slightly undercooked center piece. Please.
Totally cheating, I know, but my favorite brownies are dark chocolate Betty Crocker ones. Add a little dark chocolate syrup, chocolate chips and peanut butter chips, undercook just a little, and delicious!
Any non-vegan brownie is good enough for me!

my very favorite brownie recipe is dark chocolate brownie with banana chunks and coconut flour! i use unsweetened dark chocolate which gives it a very strong flavor, paired with very ripe banana pieces, that give a soft and sweet kick to it… plus for the flour i use half of the amount of organic coconut flour, not only does it smell delicious but is good for you as well!

I dont love chocolate. I cant eat straight chocolate. One year at camp and Israeli woman made the best brownies in the entire world. I have never been able to re create them. Not one person disliked them. The entire camp wanted more!! That night for dinner we got box mix brownies. They were barely touched, just not the same.

Two kinds of brownies come to mind for me; Cream cheese swirl brownies that I have made from scratch as well as from a mix and the Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup brownies. I also have made a very good Peanut Butter Microwave Brownie. Fast and good.
My favorite brownies were my grandmothers. I sadly do not have her recipe, but a tip…she would always cut an apple in half and put it in with the brownies. Makes them last longer and not get hard.

Chelle, these brownies look absolutely delicious! I have thought about buying that book on several occasions but have not gotten around to it yet. My current favorite brownie recipe is one in Dorie’s book. I think they are called French Chocolate Brownies. Delicious!
I tried a new brownie recipe last week. Loved them so much that I had to make two batches! they are from Kraft.com

6 squares BAKER’S Semi-Sweet Chocolate
HEAT oven to 350°F.
LINE 13×9-inch pan with foil, with ends of foil extending over sides.
Spray foil with cooking spray.

Stir in sugar.

I am actually a big fan of adding wheat flour to recipes, although I’ve never tried King Arthur’s white whole wheat, so I will definitely have to check that out, and I would love to learn more about cooking with wheat flour, because I’m usually winging it when I do it!

My little sister makes the best brownies in the world! They come from a box (probably Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker), but she always adds white chocolate or peanut butter chips. Whenever we have a family event, she has to make about 3 pans worth just so people have enough brownies to take home. They’re so delicious, and I love my little sis for making them!

My absolute favorite brownie I just recently found. Peanut Butter Caramel Brownies that Bobby Flay did on a recent throwdown. I found the recipe on his website and they are a little piece of heaven here on earth. They are everything a brownie should be, fudgey, chewy, and moist with a crisp top. But whats great about these is there are ripples of salty caramel/peanut butter running through them. I don’t know how he didn’t win that throwdown. (PS – i am also a fan of you on facebook and subscribe to emails). Keep up the awesome baking!!!
I completely agree with your theory on baking. I don’t really do a lot of healthy baking because most times, people eat dessert because they want a little indulgence. That said, I do love baking with whole grains, I just wish I did it more often.
As for a favorite brownie recipe, I must admit that I am still searching for one. But your experience with this King Arthur recipe has tempted me to try it out. Who knows…it might be the one!
Oh, my, a favorite brownie? That’s like choosing a favorite child. Which is way easier than it sounds.
My favorite brownie comes from a bakery in my old neighborhood–it’s not to sweet, and straddles the worlds of cake-y and fudge-y perfectly. There are coarsely chopped walnuts pressed into the top, and–the best part–the pan is lined generously with granulated sugar. So every single brownie has a sugary crunch on the bottom, a nutty crunch on the top, and smooth, chocolate-y heaven in between!
Thanks!

My friend’s recipe that she passed on to me includes a tablespoon of mayo. They are some of the best brownies ever!
Unbleached white whole wheat flour. Sounds too good to be true, but thank goodness for King Arthur – those guys are AMAZING! I don’t have one favorite brownie … sometimes plain, sometimes nuts, sometimes cream cheese … all I care is that they’re dense, chewy, and thick
Well, been loving “Brownies”,”King Arthur Flour”(many years),and “Brown Eyed Baker”,for along time!! Will have to give the recipe a try!! Love the site, and appreciate all the work!!
Unfortunately I don’t bake brownies too often. I’m always afraid I’ll eat them all

I have never heard of white whole wheat flour ! This is really new to me. Would love to win the book or the flour.
Thanks and love your site
I don’t have a favorite brownie recipe … I just LOVE brownies. Whether its from a box or from sracth and the pictures of the ones you just made look SINFUL!!!
I’m now a fan on facebook.
My favorite brownies right now are the marshmallow brownies on your site. My kids LOVE them. I know I didn’t get the name right. It’s a layer or brownies, marshmallows, then rice krispies with pb & chocolate. I am already a subscriber through RSS feed. Thanks!!

My go to brownie is actually this King Arthur Flour recipe, except I always find a way to add extra chocolate and swirl in some dulce de leche !
Stacey’s Awesome Brownies…
Fudgy brownie w/chocolate cream cheese frosting!
There is this teeny little bakery about 25 mins. from where I live. She makes the best cream cheese brownies. Her brownies are huge & fudgy. She decorates the top with her oh so yummy cream cheese frosting. Perfect with a glass of milk!
Oh how I love KAF, too. They never let me down. My current favorite brownie is KAF’s Deep Dark Fudgy Brownie with their black cocoa, yum. http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/deep-dark-fudgy-brownies-recipe
I love brownies. I really like ones with nuts, but my favorite ones are my mom’s homemade cheesecake brownies!

Oh man, now this is exciting! A flour giveaway! My favorite is Rick Katz’s Brownies for Julia from Dorie Greenspan’s book, though yours looks very tempting…
Believe it or not I love the boxed brownies from Aldi’s!

I like ‘clean out the pantry’ brownies. Usually made with Ghiradelli box mix ….. adding in whatever is in the pantry…. coconut, choc chips, nuts, butterscotch chips, caramel…..
yummy
I haven’t had much luck substituting white whole wheat flour in cakes, they’ve come up drier, so I must be not substituting enough liquid in. I’d like to try this recipe because the pic looks amazing!
Unfortunately, my brownies come out of a box – Ghirardelli all the way!
I love a boxed brownie! My homemade ones don’t quite get as chewy!
I love any brownies!! Even boxed, but home made are the best. Use good chocolate and let them be gooey please!
I love brownies with things in them – like nuts or extra chocolate chips!!!! I also think they look super pretty with a dusting of confectioner’s sugar
I love the Ghiradeli brownies, too. I really like the corners best. I like to have a little crunch with the brownie, so it’s got to be on an edge!

My favorite brownies are fudge brownies–ones so ooey and gooey that they are practically batter, even after baking them!
Thanks for the giveaway!
I am a fan of fudgey brownies. No cake brownies for me, please! I can’t remember where the best recipe I’ve tried–so far!–came from, but trust me when I say that they are excellent. Fudgey, chocolatey, and all sorts of other delicious words that my spell checker tells me don’t actually exist. The batter that makes them is pretty nice, too…
My favorite brownie is still the good ol’ duncan hines out of the box, awful I know! So far I have not been able to master the homemade brownie, but I would love to try again!
I have been interested in this cookbook for some time and have not bought it to date. I already use KA’s white whole wheat flour and have been pleased with the results when substituting for AP flour. I am looking forward to trying the brownie recipe. Winning the book would be even better than purchasing it!
my mother’s anciet brownie recipe is my favorite – only when she makes it, though! last night i made some from a box with a swirl of peanut butter, though, for the husband to take to work.
When we need to bring a dessert to a kid-friendly potluck or event, we bring this which is always a hit — Make a 13×9 pan of brownies using a store bought mix. Then when the brownies come out of the oven, sprinkle chocolate chips and mini marshmallows on top. Put back in the turned-off oven for just a few minutes to melt the chips and make the marshmallows gooey. Pull out the pan and place graham cracker squares on top, pressing down lightly. Let cool completely, then cut along the graham cracker perforations for Easy S’more Brownies. The kids love them.
I love the chocolate-peanut butter brownie recipe I found on epicurious. And I make them w/ the King Arthur White Whole Wheat flour!
P.S. I now follow you on twitter!
I’m in love with any super fudgy brownie recipe. I’m talking about the gooier the better!
I follow this blog and facebook!
I love King Arthur products and I’ve been wanting this book! I bake a lot with whole wheat pastry flour, which is lighter and less grainy than the hard varieties. I use it in cookies, quick breads, pancakes…you can’t tell the difference…really! I use this white wheat flour weekly in bread. These brownies look great!
My favorites have always been cheesecake swirl brownies, but there is one other kind that I love. Every fall we buy a couple boxes of Ghirardelli box mixes “for the pantry” and I make them in the depths of winter, when we are snowbound and huddling by the fire. They are their own kind of special because they make my family so happy and it’s our little tradition. That’s what I love about baking.
I made the brownies on King arthur website sometime back… loved them…I especially loved the shiny crust on top
I like box mixes. It’s pathetic, I know. My favorite box mix is the “NO PUDGE” brand of low-fat brownies. They’re surprisingly good.

My favorite brownie ever was from a BBQ/gas station near my hometown. They had a case of freshly homemade brownies and cookies. I had to stop in everytime I passed. But they are out of business now. What a shame!
I love chewy brownies with frosting on top. YUMMY!!!
I think i need to make some now

Healthy-ish brownies?! I’m SO in!
As far as a fav brownie recipe, I absolutely adore Ina’s decadent brownies. One small piece will put you in chocolatey-brownie heaven!
But I also have a very special place in my heart for some silly ol’ store brand mix, which my college roomie and I used to underbake and share the warm, ooey gooey yumminess straight out of the baking container. Ahhhh… those carefree college days!
(I already subscribe to your posts via email – wouldn’t want to miss a morsel!

I haven’t tried this recipe. I can’t wait! I love fudgy brownies. Nutella brownies are good too:)
One of my all-time favorite brownie is one that my mom would make every winter….just your basic homemade chocolate brownie, but after it finished baking she would put ghiradelli mints on top and let them melt. After they cooled there were the best mint brownie dessert!!! Simple but so tasty:-)
I have made some cream cheese brownies that were pretty good, but the most unusual ones I have made were Black Bean Brownies – they tasted pretty good and were fiber-licious!
My favorite brownies are the ones my grandmom made when we were little. They were cake like with fudge icing.
I am making these brownies tonight. A very good brownie is Max Brenners Brownies.
A Facebook Fan smithsonj@fuse.net
I never met a brownie recipe that I didn’t like. DH is a brownie junkie so I make them all the time. He does eat whole wheat stuff and I do buy the K A White Whole Wheat flour–it;s great. For Valentine’s Day I made the brownie mix (I think it was Betty Crocker) with the pouch of Hershey’s chocolate—so yummy!!
I love fudgy brownies. I usually use the Ghiradelli mix, but I always add something extra- a handful of coconut, or nuts, or marshmallows will do.
I recently have subscribed to your site and love it!
I love the Ghiradelli mix, but I recently made brownies and put marshmallows on top which was really awesome. So that might be my go-to brownie recipe now
My favorite brownie recipe is aptly called “money back guarantee brownies” I found the recipe in a book of chocolate/nut recipes. The bakery who gave the recipe to the cook book authors will give anyone their money back if this brownie is not the best they have ever eaten!! I always get rave reviews when I make them!
My mom had a few specialty items she loved to make and was fabulous at doing so. One of them was brownies. She died when I was twelve and didn’t ever write anything down about how she did her brownie magic but I remember that it involved boxed brownies, extra chocolate chips in the brownies, an extra egg. She would make a double batch, so they would be super thick. Then, she made this incredible chocolate icing with butter, chocolate chips, powdered sugar and lots of love. Sometimes she made the brownies with pecans, and sometimes she left them plain.
They were so yummy. I have tried to duplicate them, but, they will never be the same.

Hmm, I’ve made brownies from boxes, from-scratch brownies, and brownies made with black beans…and they all tasted really good! It’s good to know that whole wheat flour can still make a fudgy brownie! Thanks for the giveaway!
Any gooey, fudgey brownie will do. Just no nuts. I hate when brownies have nuts.

I recently started flowing the south beach diet and have been baking whole wheat bread, which I love. I would love to get the king arthur cookbook!
I like the box kinds because I can mix it up quick and eat straight from the bowl, then bake what is left.
i make my homemade brownies and i add chocolate chips and pecans and shredded coconut swirl in some sweetened condensed milk and that makes my family super happy…i love your blog!!!…e*
My husband can’t make anything, but the best brownies.. I dont know what he does. .and its only from the box.. but they are great!
This is silly but I’ve never been able to make the perfect brownie! I always make them from a box!
I love chewy brownies!! Delicious!
I’ve made a couple brownie recipes from scratch and was never overly impressed. but i’m always willing to try new recipes. in the meantime, a real tasty go to are the ghiradelli boxed mixes.
I love rich vegan brownies (using applesauce as a binder).. now I’m craving a batch!

My favorite brownie recipe is the basic brownie recipe from Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything. It’s no hassle – from scratch brownies ready in 30 minutes! – but made with real chocolate instead of cocoa powder.
My favorite brownie recipe came off the back of the cocoa powder container, from Hershey’s I think it was. I make them in a muffin tin to cut down on crumbs, create the perfect serving size, and to ensure every piece is an “edge” piece.

I usually use whole wheat pastry flour in my baked goods for health reasons – so I’ll have to try the King Arthur white whole wheat!
My favorite brownie is the King Arthur one – but I’ve only tried the original (white, all purpose flour) one. Like you, I’m scared to make the transition to whole wheat flour. Thanks for the chance to win!!

May I have chance to win the flour to give it a try. Thanks, sammi

I will always love Ina’s Outrageous Brownies, but I haven’t made them in a year because they are just too darn calorie loaded! I’ll settle for the less rich while my husband is on a diet.
And I’m an email subscriber. I enjoy your blog so much!
thanks — would love to win either item — I enjoy King Arthur products as well. My favorite brownies are probably any that come right out of the oven! I seem to never make the same version twice.
PS I also subscribe to your RSS feed.
I love most brownies, but my favorite recipe (so far) comes from a local newspaper cooking contest recipe booklet. It is quite a simple recipe, but bakes a superb brownie. I just bookmarked Hershey’s Ultimate Chocolate Brownies to try though. We’ll see how that goes.
I make boxed brownies and add chocolate chips to the mix.
As much as I love cooking…I’m new to the whole wide world of baking. So, for now, I still just prefer a good boxed recipe.
I love KA’s white wheat flour. I make Baker’s one bowl brownies, put a thin layer of raspberry jam on top, then a fluffy layer of cocoa tinted cooked icing. You must cut the squares small because they are so rich!
I have always liked the store-bought mixes (any brand, usually something that says fudgy or dark chocolate) better than any homemade brownie I have ever tried. And I really prefer making everything from scratch!
and also I get your feed through my google reader
I absolutely love browniesss! My favorite brownies are Ghiradelli’s Double Chocolate Brownies.

one of my favorite brownies are the premade vanilla frosted brownies at Albertsons. this is very unusual since I am not a store bakery fan
not sure if it counts as a brownie, but the chocolate chip coconut blondies on your site are my favorite!
just subscribed on google reader, love your site and your recipes
My favorite brownie is from Cook’s Illustrated. It is a chewy brownie and needs nothing – no nuts, no chocolate chips, no frosting. Too, too yummy!
So…my absolute, hands-down, smack-your-momma favorite brownie recipe is one that my husband introduced me to when we first met. He worked at a family-owned restaurant on the Indian River in Melbourne, Florida where, everyday, they would make up a batch of brownies to be used as part of the days’ desserts. He RAVED about these brownies, so I (being the ever-enthusiastic girlfriend!) asked him to make them for me. Thus started MY love of this recipe…but I still didn’t have a clue how to make them THIS GOOD. Fast forward a few yeas: we are newly married, and I want to make the brownies for myself (in all those years, he always made them). The secret: totally shocking…it was just the recipe on the back of the Baker’s chocolate box. Seriously??! They are the perfect combination of ooey-gooey and crunch. My adaptation as it stands today is to crumble graham crackers in the finished mix, then add chopped marshmallows to the top of the pan before baking. These are the s’mores without the campfire drama. TRY IT, folks…you cannot go wrong
My fave brownies are so fudgy and chewy enough that hou can roll them into balls!

I love all types of brownies, I haven’t found a favorite recipe yet. I do prefer them without frosting though… call me odd.
I love King Arthur and recently went to the King Arthur store in VT. So cute, I was a kid on Christmas morning walking around there. Their products ROCK! I subscribe via RSS.
I adore a random recipe I found and use faithfully for brownies. I have no idea where it came from but it bakes up a perfect batch every time. It is all about melting chocolate to start and adding chocolate chips to the batter. Yum!
i love ben and jerry’s brownie batter ice cream. i don’t know if this counts…but it should:) Yum!

I just subscribed to your blog. I’m not much of a baker… yet. I hope to learn more from you. Thanks!
I love the Hershey’s Best brownies… I make them with either peanut butter chips or white chocolate chips, and they’re to die for!
Oh, and I’m a facebook fan and will leave a status!

My fave is actually the Ghirdelli box from Costco. I know, sad, but they are SO good.

I loooove KA’s white whole wheat flour. I use it in place of AP flour all the time and no one knows the difference!
My favorite recipe is from a book I got when I got married. The recipe is called Tappan Hill Brownies and they are sooo good. They have chocolate chips and bakers chocolate in them…very rich and cake like. YUMMY!!

I love the king Arthur fudge brownies(it is on the back of the ap flour). I haven’t tried the whole wheat ones but the recipes looks similar so maybe next time I want some brownies I give those a try.
The Ghirardelli box mix with chocolate syrup is by far the best there is. I’ve been wanting to make this KAF recipe for a while, though. Maybe I’ll give it a try, although I just know it will never compare to the Ghirardellis.
I’m now a Facebook fan!
Mmm…My favorite brownie recipe is Tamami’s Luxury Brownie recipe from cocoandme.com. It’s really dark chocolately, rich and flavorful.
I love the KAF recipes but I also love the one from a kids cookbook we used growing up (Disgustingly Rich Brownies)– from the cookbook with the bears on the front!
I am a facebook fan
My favorite brownie so far is Ina Garten’s peanut butter brownies! So yummy! And, I am now an RSS subscriber.
p.s. I love your philosphy on baking! I have never understood the concept of “healthy” baking!
My favorite brownie recipe is one that I found in a kid’s cookbook I got for Christmas one year when I was little. Great brownie!
My favorite brownie recipe is one that I can recite pretty much forward and back. I’m not really one to add cocoa powder, however. I’m more of a pure chocolate gal.
My favourite brownie recipe is vegan, extra chocolate-y and uses apple sauce for most of the oil. This makes a super moist brownie. Plus, it’s a bit healthier as apple sauce is already quite sweet, we don’t need to add as much sugar.
My favorite brownies that I’ve eaten were 3-layer: topped with crispy rice/pb/chocolate layer and marshmallow fluff. But when it comes to baking brownies, I’m totally lazy and use a box mix.
snowpeech [at] hotmail [dot] come
Ghiradelli’s mix that I get from Costco is amazing!
I’ve never made homemade brownies becuase the Ghiradelli Triple Chocolate brownie mix from CostCo is AMAZING! (They only sell double chocolate at my local grocery store.) I want to try this recipe though!
Boxed brownies are actually really good sometimes. Home made stuff is awesome too! Like my Swedish Cupcakes that I’m making in the latest episode of my cooking show.
