The Weekend Dish: 11/20/2010

Thanksgiving week is upon us! I imagine many of you are going to be hitting the grocery stores this weekend to stock up on everything you need for your holiday feast. What are your plans? Having guests to your house, going somewhere else, traveling? While Christmas has always been my absolute favorite holiday, Thanksgiving ranks up there around the 1B position. Without the stress of gifts, it always feels so warm and cozy to just enjoy being with family and friends, catching up over good food. I still have two more Thanksgiving recipes coming on Monday and Tuesday, so stay tuned for some traditional stuffing and cranberry-walnuts rolls. And stop back on Friday for a dish that will use up a ton of your leftovers!

Weekend Fun

Some random musings about stuff that has gone on in the last week…

Full Disclosure: I have been pretty under the weather this week, barely crawling out of bed for two full days of it, so I have gotten a bit behind. Weekend Fun is going to be a little short and sweet this week. It will be back in full force next Saturday! :)

1. The Pens… WOO!

Things seem to be clicking again, although I never want to hold my breath. Sid is keeping pace with Stamkos in the points race; he needs to do some catching up in the goal department. Would love to see him win both this year. Back-to-back afternoon games next Friday and Saturday; weird scheduling, but… GO PENS!

2. The Steelers… BOO!

Okay, I really wasn’t expecting them to beat the Patriots. I just wasn’t. The Patriots had been embarrassed by the Browns the week before. The likelihood of them losing a second straight game was slim. Plus, we just can’t seem to handle the Patriots… ever. Games against them always make me nervous, and rightfully s0.

Have to laugh at Jeff Reed getting cut. After beating up paper towel dispensers in Sheetz, getting into drunken arguments with police, and who knows what else, he finally got the boot. He has been borderline awful this year, but I don’t know about bringing in a new kicker. To kick at Heinz Field in the winter elements? Risky. We’ll see how it goes! Raiders at home tomorrow. Oakland games always make me nervous too.

3. Fantasy Football… I lost, but still in first place!

It would have seemed crazy a couple of months ago to at any point wish you had Michael Vick instead of Peyton Manning. But yeah, that was me last week. I did  pick up Chicago’s defense this week and they got me a cool 18 points on Thursday night, so a nice head start.

However, in a total bonehead move… I am also in a pick ‘em league (pick the winner of each game based on the spread), and I totally forgot to put my picks in before Thursday night’s game. Zero points for me this week. Total bummer. Stupid schedule.

4. STILL reading Eat, Pray, Love.

Really need to finish this book already.

5. Black Friday: Yay or Nay?

I have done it the last two years, both times going the outlet mall route. I guess because it’s so spread out, it never seems terribly crowded (although finding parking is always tough!), like a mall on Black Friday does. It’s been fun, definitely puts me in the holiday spirit, although I usually end up buying more for myself than for people on my list! I need to review my list and look at some store circulars this weekend before deciding if I’m going out this Friday or not. What about you? Do you brave the Black Friday madness for deals?

    i am so happy that this week is thanksgiving! i do sometimes shop on black friday, but i usually skip the early madness and go later in the day. i don’t think i could handle a crazy shopping mall at 5am:-)

    I never though a food blog would help me with my fantasy football team! I had no idea my kicker had been dropped. Thanks to you, I’ve already picked up a new one :) My husband was impressed that I knew this info before he did!

    Black Friday….I only venture out if there is something in particular I am looking for and it is on sale. Otherwise, I SLEEP IN! All those years of working retail make me really appreciate relaxing the day after Thanksgiving!

    I avoid going out Black Friday. Too many crazy people with no manners. I just don’t have the patience anyway. I either shop on line or have my shopping done by Thanksgiving. This year, I only have two more present to buy and I am done. I hate going to the stores after Thanksgiving, way too many people out shopping, I just hate crowds.

    OK I’m sorry but gotta send you a post. I found your site cuz was looking for a recipe using fresh green beans and loved not only the recipe so much but also your discussion prior. So had to keep reading. Gotta try some of the others imn seeing. But I just told my BF I found a website I actually like with recipes I actually like. These are both unique for me. BUT bnow to seal the deal I see you’re also a Steelers and Penguins fan (yes am sitting here watching Pens as I type). So it’s official!
