Goodbyes are never easy…
There is no Weekend Dish this week, as you might have noticed there were no new recipes posted, and I haven’t done any blog surfing. This week, sadly, we had to say goodbye to my Grandma. She passed away suddenly, in her sleep, early Monday morning. Even though she was 91, it took us all by surprise. She wasn’t sick and didn’t have any long-term ailments. I had been away for two weeks (and still in Florida) when she passed, and am so thankful that I made time to go and visit her the day before I left. She was an amazing woman, the best grandmother, and will be missed tremendously by so many. I wish I had been able to sit down and go through every single recipe of hers with her, but now I’ll tackle them by trial and error. I look forward to sharing many of her favorites with you, as she loved nothing more than feeding those she loved, watching them enjoy the food, and always prodding whoever she was feeding to eat more.
My grandma hated to have her picture taken, so unfortunately I don’t have too many. The one above is from this past Christmas, and this is her and I on Christmas in 2005:
When we were growing up, my Grandma never liked dogs. Apparently, it was always a point of contention between her and my grandfather (who was a huge animal lover). However, in the last handful of years she began to soften, and then she absolutely fell in love with Einstein. They were buddies – she loved him, and he was protective over her. I love this picture of them:
While we all naturally feel she left way too soon, I know she is at peace, reunited with my grandfather and probably exchanging political jabs with my Dad. I love you Gram. xoxo
(Posting should be returning to normal next week, and I will be slowly catching up on comments and emails. Thank you all for your patience.)
The post about your dear Gram was very moving. I’d like to be remembered as that kind of grandmother. Oh, and you are absolutely adorable. I have no doubt that your family is very proud of you.
So very sorry for your loss.
I’m sorry to hear about your grandma. My deepest condolances.
I am so sorry on the loss of your wonderful Grandma. Thank you for sharing the beautiful pictures and your love for her. Take care…Lura
So sorry for your loss. I had a great aunt 89yo that we lost suddenly. Her sister was the baker but she was my coffee and biscotti companion. I miss her dearly. She too hated her pics taken and wasn’t a big dog fan, just as she started to become fond of my bassett he got hold of her dentures. Your post brought back many memories, thank you so much for sharing. Sending prayers for you and your family during this difficult time.
I am so sorry to hear of your troubles. My thoughts and prayers to your family and freinds.
Hurry back, but take your time… we will all still be here, understanding and loving you.
My condolences on your loss Michelle. My own granny passed on when she was about to turn 90. Like yours, she lived a full life and they’re both probably kicking up their heels in heaven now. May God give you the grace and strength to cope.
God bless.
Thinking of you and your family. What beautiful photos and a beautiful grandmother…Take care, Kai
So very sorry to hear about the loss of your grandmother. She sounds like she was a wonderful woman, and a pivotal influence in your life. You will always see her in your hands as they prepare things in the kitchen, as you share, and in so many other facets of your life.
Peace to you and your family.
I’m so sorry to hear about your Grandma’s passing. Last year I lost my grandma a little over a week before Christmas time. :( My deepest condolences to you and your family.
So sorry for the loss of your grandmother.
I lost my Gramma in July; it hurts a lot. I’m so sorry for your loss. Maybe make some of her favorite recipes. That has helped me celebrate and remember my Gramma.
I am so sorry about your loss, but as long as you keep her in your heart she will be right there beside you everyday!!! You posted lovely photos!!!
I’m so sorry to hear about your loss but I’m glad you were able to visit with her one last time.
It’s too bad she didn’t like pictures–she has a lovely, interesting face! Her bone structure is great. I, too, plan to be very good-looking when I’m old…when superficial things matter far less than bone structure. =)
Thanks for the reminder that my grandmas could go anytime, too. Like yours was, both of mine are healthy in their 90’s, but I’ve been thinking about this possibility lately and looking for opportunities to say all I want said BEFORE they’re gone. How wonderful that you made time for your grandma and didn’t take her for granted. May your good memories always be a comfort to you.
So sorry to hear about your sweet Grandmother. It seems you ladies were close and it is always hard to lose someone you love. Thinking of you!

This post brought tears to my eyes. You will always have the memories so cheirsh those. The pain will ease a little with time. Your grandmother was so proud of you I am sure. Keep up the great work on your site.

I hope you and your family find solace in knowing she is at peace, watching over you with your father and grandfather. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family.
Sorry for your loss…But it is nice to have warm and loving memories of our loved ones…they are great consolation and a great help in the healing process of our loss… The recipes of grannies and mums are always a treasure. Looking forward to your granny’s recipes.
I’m so sorry for you!!! Always think of the good times you had together!
(My grandma died much too soon when I was only a teenager, but I sometimes dream about her as if she was still alive. That’s strange but also comforting in a way…)
So sorry for your loss. Sending lots of warm thoughts your way.
I am so sorry for your loss–and so thankful you got one last visit with her!
So sorry for your loss. It sounds like you have wonderful memories of your grandmother that you can cherish forever. Be well.
I’m so sorry for your loss. That picture of your grandmother is so beautiful.
I’m very sorry for your loss. I too lost someone I loved this year unexpectedly, and it’s still very hard. You and your family are in my thoughts.
I am very sorry for your loss. Your loving memories of her, and her recipes, will help to heal your heart.
Sorry for your loss :(
Sorry to hear about your grandma…I too lost my grandmother earlier this year. I have no doubt she’s watching over you very proudly, along with your grandpa and dad.
I’m sorry for your loss. Your grandma must have been a lovely woman.
I’m sorry for your loss. Your description about how your grandma was, in reference to cooking and feeding people, reminded me a lot of my own grandmother, and it kind of got to me. I’m very close to my maternal grandparents, so when the day comes that I lose either one of them, it’s going to be hard, so I can only imagine what you’re going through. But, just as you said, she is in a better place now. Praying for peace and strength to get you through this loss…
Next Sunday it will be 9 years since I lost my grandmother, and I still think of her every day. She lived next door to my husband and me, and I would start my day seeing her hand waving to me out her kitchen window. I inherited alot of her recipe boxes and cookbooks, and it is a joy to sit and go through them and reminisce. I’m so sorry for your loss, but I hope that reading through her recipes and making them, and sharing them with us will bring you comfort and peace.
Chelle, I am so sorry to hear about your grandmother. I know how much she meant to you. ::hugs::
So sorry for your loss, it is always too early to lose somebody we love…
So sorry for your loss, my favorite grandparents were both 91 when they died also…you know it will come but it was still so hard, miss them both!
I am sorry for your loss. But she is in a better place and knows she is loved by you and everyone. And know you have hundreds of fans that support you too.
I’m so sorry to hear about your grandmother. My thoughts are with you and your family.
So sad to hear about your loss! I’m sending good thoughts you and your family’s way!
I’m so sorry for your loss.
I’m so sorry to hear of your loss.
I’m so sorry to hear about your grandma. Hugs.
This brought a tear to my eye. She seems like a fabulous lady. I wish so much that I’d spent more time learning my dad’s recipes before he passed when I was 17. Kills me. But sometimes I feel like he’s guiding my hand in the kitchen.
Sending lots of love to you and your family. <3
Ashley
My grandma was so special to me, as well. It was one of the toughest things ever to lose her; she was only 74 when she passed away but I had 27 great years with her (at that time). I wouldn’t be who I am today without her positive influence and loving heart. Thoughts and prayers are going out to you & your family as you grieve this loss. Thanks for all you do. : )
sending warm thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
sorry for your loss :-( spending time in the kitchen and making (‘baking”) your way through her recipes will be a great way to keep her close to your heart.
I am very sorry for your loss!
I’m so sorry for your loss.
My deepest condolences from one Michele to another… Believe it or not, I too lost my grandma shortly after she turned 91. She died the day before my 10th anniversary. I know what it’s like to be close to your grandma. Your grief will begin to pass and, as they say, life must go on. Your grandma will always be with you in your memories. You don’t need a photo…the pictures are all there in your mind.
I’m so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
I am so sorry for your loss – My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. She sounds like a wonderful woman and grandmother :)
So very, very sorry, Michelle. You bear an uncanny resemblance to your beautiful grandmother. She will live on in your love of food and cooking, and your generosity for sharing with all of us. God bless.
I am sorry for your loss. She must have been so pleased with you being the cook that you are and giving her credit as well.
What about Einstein? It breaks my heart when an animal is left behind.
I’m so sorry that you had to say good-bye to your beloved Grandmother. You are so right…goodbyes are never easy and perhaps one of the toughest things to have to do. I know that her memory will live on and flourish in the many recipes you will make and post about here.
Take good care.
Much love and prayers to you and your family. Hang in there.
Sorry for your loss. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers during this time.

I am so sorry for your loss. I never knew either of my grandmothers and I am always envous of those who have had the blessing to know and learn from a grandmother. Cherish all your memories and know that she will be waiting with open arms to greet you someday long into the future.
I’m so sorry to read of your loss. As you said, “Saying Goodbye is never easy.” Grief is a process that takes time, and we know you need that, so you take all the time you need to work through things and treasure your memories of that sweet grandma. Prayers and blessings!
I am so sorry to hear about your grandmother. Grandmothers are very special and you will always remember the good times. I’m looking forward to you sharing her recipes and your memories about those recipes.
Oh darling, I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. She sounds like a wonderful Grandma and cook. Lots of love to you and your family.
So very sorry for your loss. Your Grandmother sounds like a wonderful, loving woman.
There never is a good time to say goodbye….and really, isn’t it just,So long for awhile till we meet again??? Still our heart hurts.Sorry for your loss.
It is so difficult to lose those we love and my heart is heavy for you. You had a very sweet Grandmother and all those treasured times you shared will be with you always. I too lost a grandmother that I cherished and her legacy was one of love, hospitality and wonderful foods. That will live on for you as it has for me. I only have one of her recipes written, but her measurements were “a handfull of” and a “pinch of”…and that is how I make those foods to this day. Not exactly the same, but close. Take your time to grieve and know that one day you will see her again. We will look forward to those great recipes whenever you are ready to post. Sending warm thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
Thinking of you during this sad time with sympathy. Glad you are celebrating the good memories of your beloved grandmother and look forward to you sharing her favorite recipes.
Your grandmother’s memory will live in you and your family by the stories you share and her recipes that you hand down. I too have lost my grandmother a few years back. Know that your grandmother is always with you, guiding you through your troubled times and smiling with you in your happy ones. Thank you for sharing your wonderful recipes (and little life moments) with us.
No other relationship in the world compares to the one we have with our Grammy, does it? I’m so, so sorry for your loss. Praying for you and your family. <3
I love your stories, heartfelt thoughts, and delicious recipes. It is with deep sadness to hear of your grandma’s passing. I truly can empathize how you feel because that’s exactly how I felt when my grandma and mother have passed away. May her fond memories always be cherished by you and those who were fortunate enough to have known her. I’m sure your grandma is very proud of you. What a nice tribute to share her recipes amongst your readers. As much as I look forward to your recipes each week, please take your time to spend it with your family. This is most important!! Meanwhile my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family during this most difficult time. God Bless!

Michelle, I’m so sorry about the loss of your beloved Grandma. I think it will be a wonderful tribute to her that you will continue to use her recipes to make dishes you and your family love. She sounds like she was a very special woman.
Thank you for sharing your loss and remembrances with us! My husband and I are in the midst of two sets of elderly, and some unwell, parents. We are constantly waiting for the worst. It is very exhausting. I am so glad to have read about your grandmother, and all the special-ness about her.
I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my Gram almost three years ago, and I still use all her funny and wonderful advice when I cook — she swore by lard! :) She was a sweet lady who I miss a lot. May her recipes and memories sustain you.
How blessed you were to have Grandma to love you and nourish your love of cooking for these many years. I lost my precious grandmother 50 years ago but I cherish the memories of her letting me ‘gom and mess’ in her kitchen, as she called it, putting a big hot fire in the old wood cookstove so I could bake my cake which had been stirred up from scratch and which I had decorated with a few crops of food coloring and swirled it to make it pretty. This must have been at a most opportune time in my learning process because I have loved to bake all my life. Grandmothers are precious. Bask in your memories.
Your grandmother was a lucky lady. She had a loving granddaughter who I’m sure made her world shine. She got to live a long life and achieved a peaceful passing. I am sorry for you who mourn her. It hurts, I know. My deepest condolences.
I’m so sorry for your loss. My condolences. May she rest in peace!
I am so very sorry for your loss. What beautiful photos. Thinking of you and your family.
I’m so sorry for your loss.
I’m so sorry for your loss! Your grandmother looked happy though and I’m glad that you got to visit her before she passed.
Very sorry for your loss. The photos are lovely.
My heartfelt condolences for the loss of your grandmother. She may not be here physically, however, loves lives on forever and so will she in your heart! She will always be with you in spirit and I am sure the memories you have will always make you smile!
I am so sorry for your loss Michelle. Unfortunately, I’ve been there with my grandparents too and I know there isn’t really anything anyone can say right now to make you feel better. Keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers!
I’m so sorry for you loss. I lost my grandma in early 2006. The pain is still fresh 5 years (almost 6) later. My sister has all of her recipes and I have been meaning to copy them and you are giving me inspiration to act on it now. I’m sure it would be a great way to honor your grandmother – to try her recipes and share them here.
I am so sorry for your loss. Take time to be with your family and share the memories of your Grandmother
All the way from Daegu, South Korea expressing my condolences. May you find comfort in the blessings of her memories. I to often get homesick and missing my mom as you your grandmother. Fortunately she lived a full life with the blessing of a family.
i am so sorry for the loss of your sweet grandma. it is never easy when you lose someone close to you. may you remember all your happy times together and find comfort in those~blessings, xoxo
Grandmothers are an incredible blessing. You were so fortunate to have a grandmother who left you with a legacy of love and the gift of hospitality. Sharing her recipes will be another tribute to a life well lived.
What a beautiful post you have in memory of your grandmother, and a true blessing for you to have been a part of her life for so long. I never knew my grandmother and was always envious of friends who “went to grandma’s house” when I was younger. Her recipes are a precious gift that will keep a piece of her with you. Our thoughts are with you and your family.
So sorry for your loss. I look forward to seeing your family recipes and how you can master them!
My deepest condolences to you and your family … peace to you always.
My condolences to you, Michelle, on the loss of your grandmother. I believe that the loss of a grandparent, especially when one is an adult, is more significant than many people realize. My grandmother passed away 7 years ago, and there still isn’t a day that I don’t think about her.
I am so sorry. You will always have those beautiful memories of her and you know she is in a better place with your grandfather. We would love to have her recipes when you feel like you are able to put them together for us. God bless
It saddens me to hear about your grandmother passing. From your photos and your entry I can get a sense of what a wonderful person she was, and how deeply you loved her.
My condolences for your loss Michelle. My grandmother died when she was 94 and I know how you feel; it still wasn’t long enough. My heartfelt wish that the pain of today will soon be replaced by all of the precious memories you shared.
Love the pics of your grandmother. She is beautiful and how blessed you are to have memories with her and a few photos too! Prayers for you and your family.
I love the pictures you do have of you and your grandmother. She seems like she was a real special lady. I am sorry and hope you will be comforted by your memories with her.
Michelle,
The love you have for your grandma is evident in your every word. The memories you share will comfort you always! My grandma passed 5 months after my daughter arrived to this world, 15 years ago. She loved spending time with my son, for his first 2 1/2 years, and she knew that my second was a girl, and she said she was waiting to meet that little girl! (Sniff). She was 94. It was a blessing she only was really ill with kidney failure for about 8 months, before that, she still was cooking, cleaning, and gardening. She never wore a pair of pants once- always dresses, it was just her, and the way she was raised (but she approved of other women wearing them). She would have been 110 yesterday, her birthday. I feel her presence often, especially when I am baking and crafting, she was my creative idol and buddy. We were told by a clairvoyant that she is my daughter’s guardian angel, she is in her aura, but I already knew that in my heart. I feel happy that now my grandma can be with us whenever she wants to, in spirit.
This is a special time for you and your family to be together, please don’t worry about us readers, we understand!
I’m sorry for your loss. I too, was very close with my grandma. Though it is never easy to lose a loved one, it brings me comfort-as I hope it does you-that she went Home so peacefully. Your blog will continue to be a beautiful way to keep her close to you. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
I am so glad you had a wonderful grandmother. When you are tackling her recipes and get a inspiration or revelation, your Grandma is working right there with you. She will always be with you.
I am so sorry about your loss! She’s went peacefully and she is in a better place now. My thoughts and prayers goes out to you and your family!
My deepest condolences.
I’m so sorry for the loss of your grandma; and it hits me close to home right now; having just lost my own Opa (grandpa) in the last wk and a bit. I hope that you know she’s still with you always and cherish every moment you were blessed to be with her.
My heart goes out to you and your family. Take care and know you are thought of in many a’prayer.
â—¦With heartfelt condolences,
Carol
A Grandma’s love is like no other and she will always be with you… The heartbreak of letting her go into eternal peace will be tempered with wonderful memories… and when you are in the kitchen…that urge to add a little more of something…or a little less…or perhaps a substitution…will be your Grandma whispering in your ear…”be adventurous”….
Condolences, dear girl, may you find comfort and strength in tender memories…
I am so sorry for your loss. Many prayers go out to you and your family. I loved that picture of your Grandma and Einstein…so very precious.
May your dear grandmother rest in peace and live in your heart. I also lost my father this past July. The void is odd. It isn’t the obvious days when the pangs of missing him strike but rather the little things like seeing a piece of paper with his handwriting on it or enjoying a scoop of ice cream that I know he loved. It seems you will have many of these fond memories to keep her love close. Embrace them. The journey of life and death makes us all equal. Warmest regards from a fellow Pgh’er in Istanbul, D.
During times like this… I always try to remember how blessed I am….to have had a person in my life…that’s so hard to say goodbye to. You were blessed. Sorry for your loss and in reading your comment about your Grandmothers recipes… I have handwritten recipes from both of my Grandmothers and my own Mother ….All were excellent cooks. I had each recipe framed and I proudly display them in my kitchen. Every time I cook…. they are in the kitchen with me… : )
I’m so sorry for your lost Michelle. Losing a love one is tragic, at any age. Cherish the memories you have with your grandmother. I will be looking forward to seeing her recipes. Grandmothers are the best cooks.

My condolences to you and your family….sounds like a super lady. :)
My condolences to you and your family.
I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your grandma. I recently lost mine as well. For the wake, my mom and I made all of my grandmas famous recipes. Not that it’s ever easy to lose someone you love, but the family had the chance to swoon over her cookies and brownies once more and remember her as a wonderful baker. It helped. I hope you can something similar with your memories. My heart goes out to you and your family.
I am so sorry for your loss. I think they all leave us way too soon. God bless you and your family.

I’m so sorry!! I’ve lost both my grandmas, plus a few women I’d loved to have CLAIMED as my grandmothers. It’s never easy…but I try to remember that, in the grand scheme of things, the parting is short. *hugs*

So sorry for your loss.
I am deeply sorry for your loss, Michelle. This was a wonderful tribute to your adorable grandmother. As I read this I was reminded of the love I feel for my own grandma and the special relationship we share. Thank you so much for sharing…
so sorry to hear it. I love both of my grandma’s – one in 1971, the other in 1983 – and I know how hard it can be. I was wondering why I hadn’t gotten an email lately.
Take the time you need to get through it. Grandma’s are special people. Loving without nagging, and almost always good cooks or bakers (one of mine was terrible at both) and always has small cash ready to hand over for no reason (my grandma used to keep a $5 bill in the pocket of her house dress every time I came over).
So sorry to hear of your loss. How blessed your grandmother was to be able to live such a long, productive and loving life and be able to have it end so gracefully, without illness or suffering. But, oh, so hard on those left behind.
I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Take care.
I don’t know you, but hugs and prayers to you and your family. She looked so adorable in the pics ;)
Hi Michelle, so sorry for your loss. Grandmothers are special beings, and I agree, I’ve tried to make my grandmother’s recipes and they never taste quite the same…it’s that special spice that they add (love!) that makes all the difference. Same with my mom’s recipes, too. When my mom passed, I made a cookbook with her recipes and my grandmothers’ recipes. Helped me cope to remember her that way. All the best, Cathy
I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. All my condolences.
In thoughts with you.
Hugs,
Rosa

I am so very sorry for your loss. This brought back so many memories of my grandma’s passing 18 months ago that I ended up crying all over again. It is so hard to say good bye. My grandma was 97 and also a woman that loved to cook and bake. I cherish those recipes that she wrote down for me and love to make them for my family and friends. Somehow though, they just don’t quite taste they same as Grandma’s did. Oh, they are close…but something is missing. I feel her with me always. I feel confident that you will too. My grandma was my best friend and I can’t replace her, but I know that someday I will be with her again. May you find peace and comfort in your memories and recipes left behind from your grandma.
What a lovely tribute.
I’m so sorry for your loss. So glad you were able to spend some time with her before she went. May your sweet memories continue to give you and your family comfort.

I found your blog not too long ago, and have really enjoyed it, but never commented.
It is painful to lose someone so close, but a life that is so long, happy and full can never truly leave us. The person may be gone, but there are little imprints of them everywhere. I hope you will soon be able to smile instead of cry when you come across one of those imprints.
Thanks for all of your recipes, I look forward to your new posts.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Lots of hugs and prayers for you & your family. <3

I am so sorry for your loss. You must have had a great grandmother. I have 8 grands and your post has made me want to strive to be one of those “great” grandmothers. Love your blog. Take care.
I just found your website while searching for a new kugel recipe – another of many dishes that nobody, no way, no how (even I) will ever make the way my grandma (Oma) did. Without measuring ingredients, and with immeasurable love. She too died quietly in her sleep, at 99, and I still wasn’t ready. I understand and send you heartfelt condolences.

I am very sorry for your loss. This is probably not an appropriate place to add this but i would like to thank you for your website. I live in Beijing, China and often get home sick, but like any Texas girl baking a little sweet treat always makes me feel better- i always find something on your website that i can make and feel just a little bit of home sweet home.
