White Russian Winter Milkshake
[donotprint]
I told you when I made the Cherry Coke Float Cupcakes earlier this week that I had something fun and spiked up my sleeve for the end of the week. No better day than Friday (happy hour at home, anyone?) to share this milkshake with you. Most milkshakes are reserved for summertime consumption (except, of course, the Shamrock Shake, which makes an appearance prior to St. Patrick’s Day), but when you include ingredients that are guaranteed to warm you up, I say winter is the perfect time for indulging. A week or so ago my Chief Culinary Consultant found a book that lost its home during his recent move and asked if I wanted to check it out for potential recipes. The book was full of hard milkshakes, mixed drinks, and all sorts of fun concoctions. There was a set of White Russian milkshakes, with four variations for each season. Seeing how this is winter, after all, I thought it would be more than appropriate to whip up the winter version. It’s delicious, and it will certainly keep you warm, whew!
I’ve never been one to make milkshakes often at home. My fondest memories of homemade milkshakes are from being in high school and spending many days (and nights) at my best friend Beth’s house. Her mom used to make us the best milkshakes. To this day I still don’t know how she made them or what she used, but they were always amazing and hit the spot.
There is a relatively new (last year) burger place in Pittsburgh called Burgatory that has some of the best burgers I have ever eaten. Also on their menu are some of the most creative milkshakes I’ve ever heard of – check them out here. They have a menu of “hard shakes” (alcoholic) and a menu of “classic shakes” (no alcohol). I still haven’t gotten my hands on one because I’m always so darn full from the awesome burger I stuff myself with. I need to work on a strategic plan for the next time I’m headed there so I can enjoy both. The menu is so creative and inspiring; after seeing those, browsing through the fun party drink recipe book, and remembering how much I loved Beth’s mom’s milkshakes, I definitely see much more homemade milkshake-making in my future!
Do you have a favorite type of milkshake?

Excellent recipe! I altered it with vanilla almond milk and vanilla vodka. Very sweet and delicious!
I love white russians. My favourite milkshakes are banana milkshakes but I will have to make these :).
You can get pre-made White Russians or even mudslides just add vanilla ice cream and they are yummy
definitely gonna make this asap
Am I seeing things in the picture or is there a layer of something inbetween the milkshake and whipped cream? I am definitely making these tonight!
Hi Emily, Nope, nothing between the milkshake and whipped cream! Enjoy them!
Just made these for Book Club tonight. They were a BIG hit! and…you’ve inspired me to go in search of the BEST burgers & shakes here in the ‘burgh. I’m hoping to get started this weekend! YUM!
I haven’t made it to Burgatory yet, but I WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend the BRGR milkshakes. Anything made with booze and Dave & Andy’s ice cream gets a big thumbs up from me. Last one I had was in September and was an amazing pumpkin flavor.
Love. Love love love. Next time I watch The Big Lebowski, these are making an appearance!
This is new! Wow! I must go for the shake.
Oh, baby. I’d skip the burger and go right for the shake! ;)
There is no such thing as perfect weather for a little whipped cream, a little ice cream and a little liquor! I welcome this cold treat in a cold January….don’t be jealous snow…
The Dude approves.
Holy Moly! My two vices sugar and alcohol! Perfection!
White Russians are by far my favorite drink – I can get so much more excited over a spiked milkshake or boozy dessert than I can over a traditional cocktail. These look amazing!
mmmmm le drool!
I hope you get a lot of readers from Pinterest. Every time I pin one of your recipes It gets a ton of repins. This one was a hit.
This is perfect for a weekend R&R with the kids. Oh how they love milkshake and choco syrup! Thanks for the post!
Perfect for a winter happy hour :)!
I suddenly feel a bit tipsy!
BRGR also is supposed to have some phenomenal alcoholic milkshakes — I haven’t yet been able to try them, though :
Thanks for the tip on BRGR shakes, I definitely need to check it out, I haven’t been there yet.
This looks really delicious! My favourite Kahlua drink is the polar bear. Hot chocolate, Kahlua, vodka, peppermint shnaps, whipped cream.
xox
Oh how have I never had this?! I love polar bears, love hot chocolate, love Kahlua, peppermint and whipped cream. It’s like it was made for me – must make this soon!
I agree with Michelle on this one! That sounds yummy! :)
That looks fabulous. My favorite milkshake is the Bailey’s shake at Red Robin. I’m going to have to give this one a try, though!
Nice one. Why is it called Russian though? :)
Because of the VODKA. The milk makes it white.
The milkshake is based on the very popular drink, White Russian. It’s “Russian” because of the vodka. It’s white because of the milk/cream that is added. For the history of the drink you can check out the Wikipedia page here:

Wow, yummy! I’ll take a virgin one please :)
Oh my father would love this! A white russian was always his guilty pleasure and now my mother’s got him on a diet that he’s really sulking about if he’s given an inch he takes a mile. I may have to go and tempt him with white russian milkshake and make trouble…
My favorite hard milkshake is homemade baileys put in the freezer. It gets thick like
a frosty from Wendy’s. You can thin it if you need too but we dont’s.
This was the first drink I ever had back in the day (wayyyy back in the day). Love it!
I don’t really make milkshakes at home either… but I do love them! My favorite?? Chocolate (w/ french fries dipped in, yep!) BUT, I know I’d love one of these!!!!
This sounds so yummy! I can’t believe I haven’t had an alcoholic milkshake yet! It just never occurred to me, but I love it! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Well hot dam! I need to make this! I never had a white russian, but now I know I’d love it! I have to make this shake!!
I love the idea of a boozy milkshake and this combo sounds perfect.
oh man, my hubs would love this! I might even get a sip in too :)
Drool – that looks fantastic!! I don’t know that I’ve ever met a milkshake I didn’t like. :D Anything chocolate is always great and I think I’m pretty partial to all things strawberry as well. :)
Aahh, I love me some boozy milkshakes! Awesome recipe!
How racist! White Russians? What about mixed race Russians? Are you implying a superior race with only white Russians?
I love these. Instead of Kahlua and Vodka, I use a mix of white chocolate and coffee flavoring.
There is a drink, maybe still to racist for you, known as a Black Russian. Pretty similar to a white Russian just a small change.
Oh and the white Russian shake was the best I’ve ever had.
Oh brother! Nanci, not everything that mentions a color is about race, let alone racism. Calm yourself. The white refers to the actual color, just as a Black Russian drink refers to the color of the drink. Drinking a White or Black Russian drink does not discriminate against or for any country, race or anyone. It supports the wonderful combination of vodka (many types are from Russia), Kahlua and cream or no cream. Have one or two and perhaps you’ll feel better and be happier!
Thank you, BEB, for this delicious recipe!
Yumminess like this has no season!
Burgatory is great! I’d recommend ordering a shake to share – it will come out first, and if you’re like me, it will be at least half gone by the time the burgers come! Thus no worries about being too full for the shake. I love the PB&J shake!
Thanks for the milkshake ordering tips :) I was thinking in terms of dessert, but it makes so much more sense to get them before the meal! Duh, haha! Now I can’t wait to go again and get one!
These sound great. I never made it to Burgatory or BRGR (but I do love Spoon) I would love to see your take on more restaurants around Pitt!
Whoa. This is heaven.
I used to go to a 50-s style diner for an amazing peanut butter cup milkshake… but this could easily become a new favorite!
A friend of mine makes the best white Russians with Kahlua though sans ice cream – this looks amazing! Mmmm.
I have a friend who absolutely loves White Russians. I can’t wait to forward this to him, it looks really good!
I’d happily drink this milkshake all year round!
Underage but would love to drink this because it looks like a milkshake fantasy :P
Lovely post!!!
This sounds so good! I love spiked drinks, and I think I would especially like this one. The combination of coffee ice cream, Kahlua, and vodka sounds great!
I love white Russians and they were one of the first dranks I ever drank (underage)…and I have fond memories of them :)
This looks perfect!
