Coconut-Honey Doggy Cake [Happy 3rd Birthday, Duke!]
An easy coconut-honey doggy cake made with only a handful of ingredients and perfect for celebrating your pup’s birthday!
Today is Duke’s 3rd birthday!!
I can’t believe this little furry nut has been with us for nearly three years already! Time flies when you’re having fun, right?! A week after we got back from our beach wedding, we picked him up. Our house wouldn’t be nearly the same without him, and Einstein would get a lot more uninterrupted nap time in, for sure ;-)
We’re so excited to celebrate his special day today – a lot of tug of war with Einstein, chasing tennis balls in the back yard, and a ton of extra affection (which he can’t get enough of). He and Einstein got to devour his birthday cake a day early! :)
If you’ve been following along here for any length of time, you know that I like to whip up a new homemade dog treat (or cake!) for Einstein and Duke’s birthday. Since Einstein has now blown out nine candles(!) there’s a pretty good archive of doggy treats if you’re interested!
This time I churned out a really easy and simple four-ingredient coconut-honey cake for Duke. The “frosting” is simply plain yogurt; both he and Einstein gobbled it up in no time, so I’m pretty sure it was a big hit :)
I’m off to snuggle that big fur ball for the rest of the day! :)

The batter was not a batter to be poured. It was more like a dough. Did not turn out great for me at all. Double checked the recipe to see if maybe I forgot something or put too much flour but nope, it was all correct. Not sure where the recipe went wrong.
Hello. Thanks for the dog cake recipe. Here are more options: https://petreader.net/?s=dog+cake
My dogs love this cake. I’ve made this several times for each of our dogs birthdays. I’ve always used almond flour. While the consistency is not loose like a regular batter, it’s not like cookie dough batter either. I do use a cookie dough scoop to help make uniform treats. I have also used muffin tins and ramekins if I want the “birthday cake” size I’ve never had an issue with raw in the middle or hard as some posters have stated. I wonder if the all-purpose flour changes the consistency or if the oven temperature is correct… an oven thermometer might help. This is a go-to for natural treats. You do need to freeze because they don’t last long on the counter.
Easy to make and my dogs loved it!
I made it for my dogs 11th birthday. She shared with her brother.
Same problem as many of the other commenters – it was a very thick dough, and there was still raw dough in the middle. Is it possible the flour measurement is off – too much flour for the wet ingredients? I had about as much batter left over as I used in the ramekins.
I made this for my boy’s 6th birthday. The consistency was like dough. I baked as directed, until
the top was firm when pressed on. But when I cut into it, it was raw in the middle. Is it suppose to have a soft center? I still gave it to him and he loved it, but I’d like to know if it’s suppose to be like this or if it didn’t cook long enough. I baked it for 15 mins and it seemed to be enough. Thanks!
Hi Bev, It definitely should be baked through in the middle and not raw.
I made this for my dogs 3rd birthday and I couldn’t even give it to him because it was still raw in the middle. I followed the recipe exactly and it still didn’t come out properly.
I made this for my dog , 4th Birthday and I went by your recipe and it came out hard.
I thought it was going to turn out like a sponge cake but it came out hard as a rock.
I did the timing as you said and also in a ramekin.
Yuki love his cake.. and it was pretty tasty. Yes I am one of those who had to taste. Used almond flour.
I made this for our dog. It was not very impressive. It was very heavy, and pastie.
Hi.. I’m going to try this for my pups birthday.. Is the coconut oil measured as melted or solid?…I noticed someone else asked but couldn’t find your reply so apologies in advance.
Hi Lin, Measure solid, then melt.
Is this okay for humans to eat?
Everything is edible, so I don’t see why not.
Yummy and cute treat. I wrote my puppy’s name in Easy Cheese and outlined with a little sugar on the edge. Indi said, “Woof”!
Hello,
It’s my girl Winnies 5th birthday and wanted to make her her very own cake, so I decided to try the coconut honey cake.
I did use regular flour. The batter was sooooo thick and it did not even poor out.
I had to add water as it was just like paste…I was wondering is that the consistancy its supposed to be?
Is the flour measurement correct at 1 3/4 cups?? I held back on about a 1/4 of flour.
Its baking now, hopefully it will be delish for my girl.
Also, Ive never used ramekins before, do you have to place them on a cookie sheet to bake or can they be placed directly on the oven rack??
Thanks so much
Margo
I made these for my pup for her 1st birthday and they were great thanks …….
Made it for Daisy’s 1st birthday
It lasted 5 minutes max… took a video too! Thabks for sharing this recipe
As odd as this may sound, I was looking for a muffin recipe that my dog and I could both enjoy and came across your recipe! I did use oat flour but didn’t change any ingredient amounts. I made 7 muffins and we shared one with a little bit of yogurt. We both liked it :)
made this for my dog’s 3rd birthday and she loved it. quick and easy to make and turned out good. will definitely be making this again
Is the coconut oil measured as 3 tablespoons when it’s solid then melted? Or melt the oil and then measure 3 tablespoons? Apologies if that’s a dumb question!
First, I must say your dog looks sweet and adorable in the picture! My boyfriend’s family has two dogs turning 5 years old today, and I have decided to use your recipe to make them a birthday cake because of all the natural and nutritious ingredients it contains. Thank you for creating this recipe! I was thinking…can I substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free all-purpose flour when using this recipe?
Happy birthday to the pups! I think that sub would work just fine :)
How many days do you think this would last what’s made Or could it be frozen ?
Hi Nicole, I’d say about 5 days.
Wanted to make coconut honey doggie cakes. Showed yogurt for frosting but nothing shown for filling. Help!.
I made this Friday for my dogs 15th birthday, & it was hard as a rock! I followed the recipe exactly. The “dough” was impossible to stir, so I had to add a little water. Do you know what happened?
I’m making these right now for my pups second birthday. They turned out great. Such an easy quick recipe, thank you!
I love the sounds of this recipe but I need to make at least 20 to 30 muffins rather than just one single cake. Is there a good way to adjust this recipe to make muffins?
Hi Karin, You’ll need to scale this up quite a bit for that many muffins, as this makes just one small cake. This would probably make 4 regular size muffins, 8 mini muffins. Hope that helps!
What a sweet face he has! Our border collie Tiki will be celebrating his last birthday this Saturday… He has a very aggressive form of nasal cancer and his health has declined very quickly. I want to make his birthday as special as I can and I came across your recipe. He’s crazy about coconut oil and honey so I’m very excited to make this last special treat for him. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe.
Oh Dani, I am so, so sorry :( Please give him a huge hug from me. We lost our older Golden, Einstein, last September only two weeks after he had a stroke and we learned he had inoperable brain cancer that had already spread to his lungs. And a huge hug for you too. Wishing Tiki a very happy and very special birthday, xo
Thank you so much Michelle. I’m so sorry to hear about Einstein. My heart aches for you. Tiki has been getting lots of extra love and treats and as soon as his cake is ready to serve you will be credited in having a hand in our last celebration with him. Tuesday is going to be an incredibly tough day. I’ve never had to put a pet to sleep before so I’m not quite sure what to expect. I’m trying my best to remain composed but there are times that I just break down. I can only imagine how painful it was for you to lose Einstein. Again, thank you for this lovely recipe, and for your kind words. 💙
I completely understand, and yes, it is so hard. Einstein was the first pet I had to put down, and it was so utterly difficult. The pain does soften over time, but there are moments still, over a year later, when I get teary and miss him oh so much. I will be thinking of you on Tuesday.
The cake was a total hit! He gobbled it down after I broke it into pieces, to see his eyes light up with sheer excitement again was so heartwarming! I wish I could send you a picture of it! I also used your recipe for the peanut butter yogurt frosting and he couldn’t get enough of it! I ended up making a larger batch of that to use when I give him his pain meds. Your recipes made his, well our, day. Thank you so much Michelle. I appreciate you having us in your thoughts. I know this will sound incredibly cheesy but I do truly hope our dear sweet Tiki and your beloved Einstein can find each other over the Rainbow Bridge. 💙
I’m SO glad he loved it! And not cheesy at all, I do hope they meet and can keep each other company :) xo
Is it 1 plus 3/4 cup flour?
Hi Evenlyn, Yes, that’s correct!
Is there a way to make one large cake?? What would the dimensions be and how long would bake time be?
Hi Francina, You definitely could! Probably a 6-inch cake pan would be big enough. I would start checking around 25 minutes and go from there.
OMG This is just too adorable! My dog, Cookie’s birthday is coming up next month and I’ve actually never thought to bake her a cake. This is amazing. Will have to give this a try and see just how fast she can devour it.
Hello. Just thought I share my experience. My puppy turned 1 yesterday so I thought I bake him a cake. I stumbled across your recipe and decided to use it since I have all the ingredients at home. Unfortunately, mine didn’t turn out as expected. First batch, (I followed the instructions) the “batter” actually turned into a doughy like consistency. I was so confused. How can I messed up a recipe with just 4 ingredients? Maybe too much flour? I kept reading over and over wondering if I missed a step but, I didn’t. Second time, I decided to use just one cup of flour, although it was a little better, still didn’t look like cake batter. However, I continued and baked the batter. After baking for 15 mins at 350°, it still didn’t cook. I then added an additional 10 mins. Took the cake out, let it cool, sadly, it didn’t not turned out right. It was hard and doughy. I had to throw it away. I feel so bad for my puppy because he didn’t get his cake. All and all, I did give it a try. I’m apologize for this long message. I really wanted to used your recipe because if the simplicity. Can you please tell me what I did wrong or what I missed? Your feedback is truly appreciated. Thank you.
Hi there, This is a dense cake, so the batter will be a little stiff, but should still be smooth. I’m wondering if you’re using hot coconut oil and a cold egg if maybe it’s seizing a bit and not smoothing out?
I had the exact same thing happen! This recipe can’t be right. Using the amounts in the recipe, what I got was more like a thick dough for biscuits. At first I thought it might have been because I used cold eggs, but after doing some research it seems the texture difference if you make that kind of mistake wouldn’t be that drastic. I even added another egg, more honey, and more oil and it’s still like a dough. Is he flour supposed to be sifted? I really wanted this to work out for my pup and would like to try again. Thanks!
Hi Michelle!
Today is my Tobie’s 6th birthday! Yay! I just made her the dog cakes, but the “batter” was so thick, it was almost, if not, a dough! I don’t have ramekins, so I put them in a cupcake cookie sheet instead. They’re in the oven right now! I’m planning to check on them after 10 minutes, in case they bake quicker since there’s less batter in them, and stack them & frost it with peanut butter! I love how easy this recipe is!
Hello! Thank you for sharing this! It’s my doggo’s 10th birthday tomorrow and I’ve been wanting to make something for her since I’ve never made her a cake…and this one’s a milestone lol. I just had a question about the batter, is it supposed to be like a thick paste, or more is it supposed to be more on the runny side? I made these tonight, but my batter came out really thick…just curious in case I decide to try my hand at these again tomorrow :)
Hi Stacey, Happy birthday to your pup! The batter is pretty thick.
is there any alternatives to the coconut that i could use?
Hi Lily, Any kind of fat would work – butter would be fine.
Hi Michelle,
Duke is such a beautiful dog :) We have a golden too, and he’s just as spoiled. Also just wanted to let you know we included your recipe in our round-up of all the best dog cakes we could find :) You can check it out here: http://www.playbarkrun.com/14-dog-birthday-cake-cupcake-homemade-recipes/

Omg, how cute is it! he must be very happy to get that birthday cake! I have one dog too. She is just 3 months age. I would love to make one on her 1 year birthday. Thks for your incredible recipe!
Happy Birthday, Duke!!
Completely unrelated — did you see that Christopher Kimball has a new project?? Milk Street Kitchen. I am curious. Was just thinking about how my Cook’s Country is lacking his touch. Not a plug for him, but I just remember you mentioning he was leaving ATK so I thought you’d like to know.
Hi Erica, I did see that! It keeps popping up on my Facebook feed, but I haven’t checked it out yet.
Happy Birthday, Duke! That first picture is priceless. What a sweet handsome face. There is nothing like a Golden. Hope you are having a fun day!
I love your fur babies! Look at him longingly looking at his cake. Priceless :)
I remember when you got that sweet boy! You are such a sweet fur mommie! I know they love their birthday treats! Tell ol’ Duke happy birthday and give him a hug for me! Love the pics – especially that last one! LOL
Oh my goodness, could that picture be any more stinkin’ cute?!!
Oh my god. I’m literally dying at how adorable this is!! You pup is so so cute, wish him a happy birthday for me! My cat’s birthday is coming up at the end of July and I would love to do something this special for her, but cats are much harder to bake for haha

Such a sweet face! I love Goldens. :) Happy Birthday to Duke!
Happy Birthday to Duke!
This looks great, and as our Suki (Tibetan Terrier) is celebrating her first birthday this weekend — AND her litter brother is coming to visit with his human mom, I think I’ll make this for them! ❤️ ? ? ??
Happy birthday, Duke! The pictures withe cake are amazing — how did you capture that without him diving in to devour the cake?
Duke is much more well-mannered around food than Einstein ;-)
Such cute pictures. Happy birthday Duke!
Happy Birthday to Mr. Duke. I hope he has a wonderful, fun filled day.
The comment about tennis balls made me think of a video that was all over the Internet last week. Buddy, a rescued lab mix, loves catching tennis balls… tirelessly. His humans bought him an automatic ball tosser. He learned how to retrieve the ball back into the device so he can entertain himself all day long…too funny. If you have not seen it, I included the link. His little anticipation deck dance is adorable!
