Giveaway: DeLallo Foods

Most of you know that I’m an Italian girl. I grew up around Italian foods and traditions my entire life. My grandfather had a commercial-grade deli slicer in his basement and would buy a whole prosciutto leg and slice it thinly as needed. We do the fish tradition on Christmas Eve. Our cookie jars were filled with homemade biscotti instead of Oreos or chocolate chip cookies.

Pittsburgh is a pretty ethnic city with lots of Italians, so it’s not hard to find traditional ingredients at regular grocery stores or little Italian groceries sprinkled throughout the city and suburbs. One of my favorite brands is one from right here in Pittsburgh – DeLallo. They make pastas, sauces, spreads, marinated artichokes and olives, olive oils, vinegars, and much more. I actually just used a jar of their crushed tomatoes to make pizza sauce last night! Their products are phenomenal and I want to share a huge basket of them with you!

As I mentioned in the Sarris Candies giveaway, this year I am foregoing the big holiday giveaways and focusing on just a couple of local Pittsburgh businesses that I genuinely love and want to share with you. DeLallo is definitely one of them! So, I am giving away this DeLallo Italian Feast gift basket to one lucky reader:

This amazing gift basket includes all of the following items:

– Artichoke bruschetta
– 2 packages of traditional breadsticks
– Extra virgin olive oil
– Pesto sauce in olive oil
– Blue cheese stuffed olives

– Linguine

In our area, we have a small Italian deli that has been around for over 30 years. Sam’s makes the best sausage, I am totally spoiled for any other. It makes recipes calling for Italian sausage taste so much better. Sam recently retired and sold the deli to his son Nick. I was glad to see Sam and “mama” still around the deli…..I just hope the sausage won’t change.

I borrowed an Italian cookbook when I was about 25 (a long time ago). I had an Italian themed New Year’s party to go to…and it was potluck. Everyone was to bring an Italian dish. I wanted to do something a little different and found a recipe for TORTA DI SPINACI E RISO (Spinach and Rice Pie). It was a total hit, and has remained my favourite Italian recipe for 30 years. Thank you for your wonderful site. I love…love…love…it!!!

This post struck a chord with me, because I too grew up surrounded by Italian food (my mother’s side were Waterbury, CT Italians, and my aunt now lives in Pittsburgh!) After working on a farm outside of Bologna, I have to say that my leanings towards Italian food revolve largely around what can be done with tomatoes and zucchini. I love baby zucchini and fiori di zucca risotta! But, when push comes to shove, give me a nice scoop of gelato (chocolate hazelnut) and I will be happy!

If I must select only one…prosciutto. It’s sublime on it’s own, but in addition, it enhances everything you set it with, as an appetizer, slivered into peas or brussels sprouts or asparagus, pastas, cheeses, and fruit. It is, by any standard, a great culinary gift from Italy. Admittedly, there are many others, but prosciutto is salty, silky, sweetly savory food for the gods!

Profiteroles are my favorite Italian dish. They are such a delicious pastry that doesn’t feel like it needs to be eaten at breakfast. During my time in Italy I ate way more of these than I should have. I think I gained 5 pounds.

Italian is my favorite, I am slightly jealous of your italian youth! Favorite italian food is really hard to pick, but I once had a “clam” shaped pastry in Naples that I will never forget!

Our local Italian restaurant makes homemade spinach and walnut ravioli with creamy marinara sauce. It is to die for!!!

Chicken Parmesan! Although, now that I’m kosher, I had to switch to eggplant parmesan. Basically, anything with marinara and cheese!
