The Ultimate Peanut Butter & Chocolate Banana Split

Ultimate Peanut Butter & Chocolate Banana Split

Elvis would be so proud.

Traditional banana splits include vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream and are topped with pineapple, strawberry and chocolate sauces, then garnished with crushed nuts, whipped cream and the all-important “cherry on top”. While it certainly sounds good, I have never been a fan. At all. I just never enjoyed the flavor combination. Each of the elements on their own I love, but put them together and I don’t want to go anywhere near it. My solution? A banana split, my way. And in my world, nothing goes better with a banana than peanut butter and chocolate. Well, we all know that I go gaga over any type of chocolate/peanut butter combination, and since both pair so well with bananas (and ice cream!) this is pretty much the ultimate banana split in my mind.

Ultimate Chocolate & Peanut Butter Banana Split

A few weeks ago Electrolux and Kelly RipaΒ  invited some bloggers and their little ones to NYC to help spread the word about Ovarian Cancer Research. The kids were able to use ice cream and a seemingly endless array of toppings to create their ultimate banana split. If you visit the Kelly Confidential website, you can create a virtual version of your ultimate banana split. For each virtual banana split that is created, Electrolux will donate $1 to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. In addition, Electrolux has also teamed up with Foodbuzz and is donating $50 to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund for every banana splits post by a Featured Publisher. This coming Monday Foodbuzz is having a “Top 9 Takeover Day” – all of the Top 9 posts for the day will be banana splits created by Featured Publishers to support the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. While ovarian cancer has never affected anyone in my family directly, plenty of other cancers have, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have a donation made and spread the word.

So, head on over and create a virtual banana split and $1 will be donated for each one. Then, rush off into the kitchen and make this amazing peanut butter and chocolate banana split!

Ultimate Peanut Butter & Chocolate Banana Split

Yield: 1 banana split (eat it all yourself or share with a friend!)

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

3 scoops of your favorite vanilla ice cream
1 banana, sliced lengthwise
Hot fudge chocolate sauce
Peanut butter, melted in the microwave
Handful of peanuts, roughly chopped (or whole, if you prefer)
Chocolate sprinkles
Whipped cream
Maraschino cherries

Place the three scoops of ice cream in a shallow bowl (or long, shallow ice cream dish if you have one). Cradle the banana halves on either side of the ice cream. Drizzle the hot fudge sauce and melted peanut butter on top of the ice cream. Garnish with peanuts and chocolate sprinkles. Top each ice cream scoop with whipped cream, and then a cherry. Enjoy!

Great split! Great cause too, this is an important cause, we lost an Aunt to ovarian cancer! Thanks for helping spread the word.

Great link, great cause, great-looking recipe! I’m not a fan of bananas, but I find them tolerable with chocolate and love chocolate and peanut butter together. I’ll probably be trying this very soon!

Yum! I have never had a banana split, how sad is that? This must be remedied! πŸ™‚

Its such a coincidence that I picked up bananas yesterday at the store! This would be divine to beat the heat we’re having out here… 102 degrees and climbing!

  19. Michele on July 15, 2010 at 10:09 am

This is also one of my favorite combos. Peanut butter ice cream is my favorite so I often melt peanut butter in the microwave before adding ice cream to the dish. I dn’t usually add the peanuts…I add chocolate chips for extra chocolate flavor! YUM!!!

  20. Julie on July 15, 2010 at 7:48 pm

Looks completely awesome…I’d love to dig into that right now!

  21. Heather on July 16, 2010 at 11:32 am

    Your split looks divine!

  23. Shelly on July 19, 2010 at 11:27 am

We made these over the weekend, and they are yummy! We used a combo of Chocolate Fudge Chunk and Vanilla ice creams. The only problem I had was trying to get the peanut butter to melt in the microwave. Maybe I didn’t have enough patience before wanting to dig in ;).

  24. Magic of Spice on July 19, 2010 at 3:22 pm

Just wonderful:) Congrats again for the Top 9:)

  25. Jean on July 19, 2010 at 3:29 pm
