The Weekend Dish: 10/23/2010

The Weekend Dish

How is October treating you? Are you enjoying the weather, doing a lot of baking, and taking in some outdoor activities? Are your teams winning? As you can see, I’ve been doing a ton of pumpkin baking (and still have a few things up my sleeve), enjoying the brisk fall weather with lots of open windows, and so far the Pens and the Steelers are looking good. Plus, the Yankees lost, which makes the world (at least my little corner of it) a happier place. Now the Phillies just need to lose and we’ll be all good. (Apologies to any readers who are Yankee or Phillies fans, I simply can’t help it!) Now, are you ready for a little weekend dishing? As always, you’ll find a recap of what was posted to the site this week as well as some bookmarked recipes from other blogs. Then, some random musings about some random stuff. Enjoy! :)

On Brown Eyed Baker This Week

Pumpkin and Cream Cheese Muffins with Pecan Streusel – Spiced pumpkin muffins filled with a pocket of sweetened cream cheese and topped with pecan streusel. A fantastic breakfast for a chilly fall morning!

Pumpkin Granola Bars – Homemade granola bars packed with pumpkin, spices, cinnamon chips and pecans –  a perfect quick breakfast or afternoon snack.

The Best Chocolate Buttercream for Cupcakes – This frosting is so good you may not even want to eat the cupcake – it’s that amazing!

What I Bookmarked This Week

Recipes from other blogs that I thought looked especially delicious and that I thought you would like too:

Apple Cinnamon Cheesecake (My Baking Addiction)
I am a sucker for pretty much any cheesecake and this gorgeous apple version is perfect for fall.

Homemade Mozzarella Sticks (How To: Simplify)
My absolute favorite appetizer. I can’t wait to try these at home, they look so ooey, gooey and perfect!

Rustic Brandied Pear Galette with Caramel Sauce (White on Rice Couple)
An absolutely gorgeous galette. Topped with a caramel sauce spiked with brandy? Divine.

S’Mores Doughnuts (Tartelette)
Another amazing confection from Tartelette. Not much beats doughnuts that taste like s’mores!

White Chocolate Walnut Blondies with Maple Butter Sauce (Cookin’ Canuck)
I love the idea of combining walnuts and white chocolate in a blondie. Topping it with ice cream and maple butter sauce? *swoon*

Weekend Fun

Some random musings about stuff that has gone on in the last week…

1. The Pens are riding a 4-game winning streak. Woo!

Kris Letang

The above picture is of Kris Letang after he scored a game-winning overtime goal against the Canadiens in last year’s playoffs. It is, hands down, my favorite picture of him (the video of him doing this goal celebration is even better). And since he scored the game-winning goal in overtime against the Predators on Thursday night, I thought I would bust it out.

After a rough start to the season, the Pens seem to have hit their stride. Brent Johnson got us 4 wins, Fleury was back in net on Thursday and although he let in an early goal, he looked good, Malkin looks positively possessed when he’s on the ice, and Sid is being Sid. We’re still down two key defensemen (although Orpik is scheduled to be back tonight), as well as Jordan Staal and Arron Asham. Two more games on the road trip; hoping we can pull out wins. Let’s Go Pens! Do it!

2. Ben Roethlisberger made his season debut. It seems most people have put this image behind them:

He seemed to play pretty well, and apparently he didn’t really get booed. Whatevs. Just happy the Steelers won. In other Steelers news…James Harrison, really? Let’s look at the series of events… 2 violent hits in Sunday’s game (which knocked two different players out of the game with concussions), on Monday you tell the media that you “don’t want to injure anyone, but definitely try to hurt people” (huh?)… Tuesday you get fined by the league… Tuesday night and Wednesday you threaten to retire. Grow up. The rules haven’t changed; the NFL has just decided to actually enforce them. Go Steelers!

3. My fantasy football team got a win.

I’m sitting at 5-1 right now and still holding onto 1st in the league. This week may be a rough one – the Colts are on a bye so I’m without Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne, Texans on a bye means no Arian Foster, and it’s still unclear if Antonio Gates is going to play. I picked up Matt Cassel for my QB, plus I already have Jamaal Charles, and am rolling the Chiefs defense against Jacksonville this week. So needless to say, this week along with cheering for the Steelers I’m going to have to say: Go Chiefs!

4. Thank you all for the fabulous book recommendations last week! I think I’ll be set for about a year now, excited to get started on some new books!

Totally agree with your assessment of the MLB playoffs. Looking forward to a Phillies loss and then rooting for one of my favorite ex-Pirates Freddie Sanchez in the World Series.

I will be baking your Pumpkin Pie Bars for a Breast Cancer Awareness Fund Raiser Bake Sale next week. I am sure they will be a hit.
