The Weekend Dish: 8/9/2014

Happy, happy Saturday to you!

What do you have going on this weekend? Today I’m finally getting a way overdue haircut. My doctor has given me the no-no on hair coloring, so I have color growing out, as well as some embarrassing frayed ends. I’m looking forward to getting it all cleaned up! Then, it’s home to watch the first Steelers pre-season game, and then do nothing but some major relaxation for the rest of the weekend. I hope you have a great one planned!

    Wow I’ve never heard a doctor say that it’s not a good idea to get your hair colored. Interesting. Well, in less than an hour I’m packing up the kid’s and we are heading to Barker, NY which is right on Lake Ontario for the weekend. Have a good weekend! 🙂

      It’s only because I’m pregnant… chemicals, etc etc. Some of my friends’ doctors have said it’s fine after the 1st trimester, but mine said absolutely not, so I’m following the rules 😉

      Thanks Michelle! I think we play your Bills next weekend, if I’m correct. I just saw a chart on common personality traits based on birth order. First borns (I’m one) apparently “obey the rules”. So there ya go 😉

    The Mac N Cheese looks yummy, I have never heard of some of those cheeses. I wonder if they are expensive. Do you have suggestions for other options if some of the cheeses are not easy to find, or are real expensive?

      Hi Kim, Here is a run down on the cheeses and some substitution ideas:

      – Mild White Cheddar – I believe you could get this pretty much anywhere, and it’s not very expensive (you can use yellow if you want, doesn’t have to be white).
      – Gruyere – This is a type of Swiss cheese and it IS expensive (although fantastic), so you could substitute just your run of the mill Swiss cheese.
      – Pecorino – This is a special type of hard Italian cheese, substitute any brand of grated Romano or Parmesan cheese.
      – Camembert – This is a very soft cheese, you could substitute something like brie.
      – White American Cheese – This should be available pretty much everywhere and it’s pretty cheap, melts well, etc. I would just use this, although you could use white or yellow, it doesn’t matter.

      Maybe, maybe not, but I’m willing to sacrifice for 9 months if there’s even a possibility that it could harm the baby. Better safe than sorry; why risk it? Not coloring my hair isn’t going to kill me (nor is forgoing lunchmeat, sushi, etc.) For what it’s worth, my hair stylist said she agreed with the doctor and said she does not like to put color on pregnant women, even if their doctor says it’s okay.

        Of course, it is your choice, your baby. But once again, hair stylist may be giving her personal feeling and old fashioned advice. As you say, it isn’t going to kill you nor is forgoing lunch meat, sushi, etc. and lots of other things. Opinions about what is safe in pregnancy change all the time. Enjoy what you can and your pregnancy!

    One of my friends who was pregnant who colored her said was told if there was any way to use a dust mask with a built in air flitter she would be able to keep on coloring without the chemicals affecting her pregnancy it is absolutely up to you if you feel comfortable doing that.

    I agree with the doctor. Pregnancy also changes your hair. When I was pregnant with my 2nd child I had a perm. It didn’t take & fell out. Color may react the same way.

    You can colour your hair with natural henna. I used it went I was pregnant with my daughter and she is a healthy girl.
