The Weekend Dish: 9/25/2010

Happy Monday folks! Due to a technical glitch, this post didn’t go out as scheduled on Saturday, so we’ll ease into Monday by trying to keep the weekend around a little while longer!

I hope everyone is having a fabulous weekend and enjoying what seems to be a bit of an Indian Summer out here in the east. I can’t lie though – I’m not a huge fan. I don’t like the extreme heat during the summer months (a max of 80 would be just fine by me), so once we roll into the end of September and it’s supposed to be cool, I expect it to stay that way! It seems though that after we cool down this weekend the heat will be behind us and I can finally enjoy a hot chocolate without feeling like a traitor to the seasons. What do you have going on this weekend? Anyone going apple picking?  As always, you’ll find a recap of what was posted to the site this week as well as some bookmarked recipes from other blogs. Then, some random life and a quick question I’d love your input on. Enjoy! :)

On Brown Eyed Baker This Week

Pittsburgh Steelers Football Jersey Cookies – Cookies to celebrate the football season, Go Steelers! (Make them for your favorite team!)

White Sicilian Pizza with Flaky, Pastry-Style Crust – A replica of a popular white pizza from a local pizza shop.

Ode to Chocolate and Peanut Butter – All of my favorite peanut butter/chocolate recipes, because it’s my favorite dessert combination!

Most Viewed Recipe This Week: White Sicilian Pizza with Flaky, Pastry-Style Crust

What I Bookmarked This Week

Recipes from other blogs that I thought looked especially delicious and that I thought you would like too:

Apple Pandowdy (Sugarcrafter)
I didn’t know what a pandowdy was before seeing this recipe, but now I’m certain that I need to eat one!

Hi Hat Cupcakes (Bakerella)
Super, super cute cupcakes!

Peanut Butter, Banana and Honey Cookies (Two Peas and Their Pod)
A close second to my peanut butter and chocolate obsession is peanut butter and banana. I can’t wait to make these cookies; I know I am going to love them!

Pumpkin and Cream Cheese Muffins with Pecan Streusel (Ezra Pound Cake)
Absolutely gorgeous muffins. And who can say no to pumpkin, cream cheese and streusel?

Rustic Rosemary Garlic Bread (goodLife {eats})
One of the best parts of fall is fresh, homemade bread. This sounds absolutely fantastic and would be perfect with many popular soups and stews.

Weekend Fun

You might remember me telling  you last week that I was heading out to HFStival last Saturday to see some older bands. We got there in time to catch the last three acts (the ones we really wanted to see): Everclear, Billy Idol and Third Eye Blind. Everclear was, well… they made me feel old. And they forgot the words to one of the songs. But, they closed with Santa Monica, which rocked and I was happy to hear it live. Then came Billy Idol. Hello, old-but-still-got-it iconic rock star!

And basically, Billy stole the show. I can’t figure out for the life of me why he wasn’t the headliner, but he really should have been. Dancing with Myself, White Wedding, and especially Rebel Yell were all phenomenal live. Once he was done, Third Eye Blind came on, but truly, most anyone following that Billy Idol performance just wasn’t going to knock anyone’s socks off. So we headed for the exit early to beat the traffic after hearing a couple of our favorite Third Eyed Blind songs.

I’ve also been catching the Pens’ preseason games, thanks to online streaming, the radio and NHL Network reruns. Why can’t they just put all of the preseason games on TV? I find it hard to believe that Pittsburgh residents would prefer to see the Pirates lose their 110th game over Penguins preseason action, especially in a new arena. All in all, the boys of winter are looking great. It’s hard to tell since the rosters change so much from game to game, but we’ve got wins under our belt and some of the younger guys are looking good. And then of course there’s Sid…

Sidney Crosby

All business. All the time.

And last but not least, my fantasy football team is continuing to roll. 2-0 now, hope I can keep it going!

Your Input

So, I’ve got a question for ya. Here’s the deal. I’ve been getting a lot of great feedback about this little Saturday ditty I’ve got going on here, chatting about life, random stuff, sports, etc. I’d love to start writing about these things more often, but I also don’t want it to interfere with the food, so I’m thinking of adding one or two sections to the site for random ramblings about everyday stuff, and also about sports. I would create separate feeds so if you didn’t want it showing up in your RSS or email it wouldn’t. What do you all think? Yea or nay? Would you read it? Would it get in the way of the food? Would love your honest feedback; thanks in advance!

I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend! Is anyone baking anything or doing anything in the kitchen?

I just discovered you blog this weekend while looking for pumpkin cupcakes recipes, and I love it (your blog). Just perfect. Thanks for all the tutorials and all the fantastic recipes, but I also like your writing style so go ahead; write about anything you want – I’ll be looking forward to every single post! I’m following you on Bloglovin’, that way I get notified when there’s a new post.
    Greetings from Switzerland

oh – you can never go wrong with Billy Idol! Talk about a classic! 🙂

  5. Alice on September 27, 2010 at 8:16 am

That concert sounds like it was so fun! We hit up our local Oktoberfest and I made your peanut butter fudge ripple ice cream last night. Can’t wait to try it today 🙂

    • Michelle on September 28th, 2010 at 7:16 pm

Mmmm that ice cream rocks! How did you like it?

  6. Kathleen P on September 27, 2010 at 8:49 am

  8. Judy B. on September 27, 2010 at 9:26 am

Much preferred your blog when it was food related only; food is your forte! Never desert your line of talent.

You excel in food/baking and that’s why I started following your blog. Maybe start another blog for lifestyle/happenings/and especially sports. My opinion……

  9. Katrina on September 27, 2010 at 9:31 am

Thanks for extending my weekend! Your bookmarked recipes look awesome.

  10. Tracy on September 27, 2010 at 10:00 am

I love your football cookies! Even if they are for the Steelers, haha. 😉 Also, I wholeheartedly vote for sections on ramblings/sports! If they are separate feeds, people who just come for the food don’t have to subscribe…but I’d be all over them. 🙂

  11. Maria on September 27, 2010 at 10:19 am

Great roundup! Thanks for including my cookies. I would love to see a random ramblings section from you! Do it already:) I made your peach crumb bars-amazing. Posted today and linked to you! Check them out. Thanks friend!

  12. megan @ whatmegansmaking on September 27, 2010 at 11:03 am

I say go for it. I don’t have a ton of interest in sports, but the way you talked about setting it up, I could read it if i wanted, or skip it if I didn’t feel like reading it. Perfect! I don’t think it would take away from the food at all. 🙂

  13. Heather @ He Cooks She Cooks on September 27, 2010 at 11:12 am

Go for it! I might mock you considerably for your Steelers posts but that is only because the Bears are better… lol

    • Michelle on September 28th, 2010 at 7:19 pm

LOL Heather! I would actually love to see a Steelers/Bears Super Bowl since I have a lot of family in Chicago! Of course, I would want us to win 😉

  14. Tina from PA on September 27, 2010 at 11:19 am

Looks like a fun concert . Not much going on this weekend, watched our Steelers WIN ! I agree with Judy B about your blog ,but , I do like the little mix of tidbits of your going ons ,it gives me a little taste of home I miss so much . Thank You for this wonderful blog!

    • Michelle on September 28th, 2010 at 7:20 pm

Aw you’re welcome, Tina! Thank you all for making it so fun! And… Go Steelers!

  15. Renee (Kudos Kitchen) on September 27, 2010 at 11:23 am

I vote yay for random ramblings! I really like blogs where you get to know who the author is and not just what they bake or cook. So much more personal! I say go for it!!!

  16. maggy@threemanycooks on September 27, 2010 at 11:25 am

Great post – love your bookmarks this week!

  17. Rachel on September 27, 2010 at 11:27 am

I definitely did some apple picking this weekend!
Your Weekend Dish is great (as is your blog)! I’ve really been enjoying it and it leads me to all sorts of interesting places. I’d be a fan of a non-food/sports etc. section of the blog. Separate RSS’s is a good idea but I’d subscribe to both : )

  18. Michelle on September 27, 2010 at 11:48 am

I tried having different pages and blogs for aspects of my life. I just did not have the time to keep the extra pages or blogs current. I work current events, football and so on into my food posts. But if you have the time, go for it!! I’ll subscribe.

  19. Pam on September 27, 2010 at 11:50 am

I like the idea of a section for random ramblings. I share your love for football and hockey and cool weather and baking and, well so far I haven’t read anything that I’m like “hmmm, I don’t identify with that.” So basically I enjoy coming to your site because like someone said, it feels more personal.
Thank you VERY much for this weeks Sid pic! He is deeeeeelish! Go Pens, but mostly Go Canes! 😉

    • Michelle on September 28th, 2010 at 7:21 pm

You are welcome, it was too yummy not to include! 😉

  20. Courtney on September 27, 2010 at 1:11 pm

I think the little tidbits of your personal life is what makes reading a food blog so much more fun than reading a cookbook! Can I spend four hours reading through all of my cookbooks? No. But did I just spend four hours this weekend poring over food blogs? Most definitely yes. The personal stuff makes it feel like you’re cooking with a friend, not with a book. So I would vote for keeping the personal ramblings, but it is probably a good idea to make them separate from the straight up food talk. And though I can’t ever be a Penguins or Steelers fan, it’s nice to hear someone who has an exciting season to look forward to. I’m from Columbus so the Browns and Blue Jackets aren’t promising too much this year, but I can’t wait to make some Ohio State Buckeyes jerseys! 🙂

  21. Shelly on September 27, 2010 at 1:46 pm

Definitely write about whatever you’d like. I’m a big fan of your writing style and will read it all. I’m a retired hockey fan, with no time or money to attend games. After sitting next to the team bench on the glass once or twice, it ruined the living room experience for me :).

  22. Sarah K. @ The Pajama Chef on September 27, 2010 at 7:58 pm

Mmmm I love your food & your writing. I’d definitely read your random ramblings… sports I don’t care for very much but would read it so I could impress my husband that I learned about sports on my food blogs! haha 🙂 Maybe you could have a few feeds though- one as an “all” feed, one as just food, one as just random… that way you could try & please everyone (as hard as that is). 🙂

  23. Debbie on September 27, 2010 at 9:02 pm

I’ve really enjoyed The Weekend Dish. I subscribe to quite a few of the blogs you attach links to so I guess we both have great taste! I have also enjoyed the non-food writings because it helps me as a reader know you a little better. I vote to continue the writings & whichever way you decide to incorporate them into your blog–I’ll be a reader!

  24. Cookin' Canuck on September 28, 2010 at 1:33 am

Yes, hockey season is starting again! Love the picture of all-business Sid. Billy Idol – it’s good to hear that he can still do his thing well.

  25. Amanda on September 28, 2010 at 6:29 am

    Sid always looks good 🙂

I’d certainly partake in Steelers and Pens ramblings 🙂 I saw the new arena when I was in Pittsburgh this weekend – It looks fantastic!

  26. Rosalind on September 28, 2010 at 8:21 am

Who is Sid? being a non American you will have to forgive me 😉 ….Billy Idol is of course another matter I grew up with him blaring from the radio, he will always be cool no matter how old !

    • Amanda on September 28th, 2010 at 2:09 pm

Sidney Crosby 🙂 He is the (Canadian) superstar of the Pittsburgh NHL team!

  27. Jen @ How To: Simplify on October 8, 2010 at 5:01 pm
