Wow. Just, wow.

As a “beer girl”, I’ve never really been drawn to mixed drinks. I’ve typically found them to either be way, way too heavy on the alcohol or way, way too sweet. However, between enjoying my first mojito on my birthday this year and, most recently, this blackberry beauty, I might need to start giving fun mixed drinks more of a chance. With the right balance of flavors and lots of fresh ingredients, I’ve found that anything can be phenomenally delicious. This fizzy float combines a blackberry puree with gin, lime juice, fresh mint, ginger ale and a nice big scoop of vanilla ice cream. It’s part mixed drink, part Italian soda and part ice cream soda float… and 100% amazing.

A big pint of plump blackberries, fresh-picked mint and a bottle of gin. Let’s get started, shall we?

I’ve only tasted gin-based drinks a couple of times and have always had an “I could take it leave it” type of reaction. They didn’t blow me away, I didn’t love them, but I didn’t outright hate them, either. However, THIS gin-based drink? We could be the best of friends. It’s fruity but not too sweet, you can taste the gin but it’s not overwhelming, and the addition of mint and lime is refreshing. The finishing move is ginger ale and ice cream. It’s fabulous and irresistible. I didn’t expect to finish the whole drink, but before I knew it, I was slurping up every last bit from the bottom of the glass with my straw. ::hiccup::

This might be an adult drink, but all of the bubbles and fizz from the ginger ale and ice cream will make you feel like a kid again. This fizzy float is a perfect summer drink – great for sipping while enjoying the warm evening air out on the back deck. Bottoms up!

Blackberry Gin Fizz Float

A fun and refreshing alcoholic drink

Ingredients

  • 1 pint (473.18 ml) blackberries
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • ½ cup (22.5 g) chopped mint leaves
  • 8 ounces (226.8 ml) gin
  • ¼ cup (60.5 ml) fresh lime juice
  • 24 ounces (680.39 ml) ginger ale
  • Ice
  • Vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  • Heat the blackberries, sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Use a potato masher to smash the berries while they heat, continuing to cook until a thick consistency is reached, about 10 minutes. Set a fine mesh sieve over a small bowl and strain the blackberry mixture through, pressing out as much juice and pulp as possible. Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes.
  • For each drink, fill a cocktail shaker with 2 tablespoons of the blackberry puree, 2 tablespoons of the mint leaves, 2 ounces of gin, 1 tablespoon of lime juice and a handful of ice. Shake 5 or 6 times, or until the drink is ice cold. Strain into a tall glass, top with 6 ounces of ginger ale, and stir gently. Once all of the drinks are made, top each with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.
