Friday Things
1. I would love to know how in just two short months we’ve gone from this:
To this:
How did that happen?! Our puppy has exploded! He’s like a real dog! Duke turned 4 months old on Wednesday and is getting his last round of puppy shots this morning. His puppy breath is a distant memory, he outgrew his puppy collar, and he and Einstein have started to play some legit games of tug of war.
2. At least 50% of the socks that I own currently have holes in them. I have no idea how this happens; I feel like I’m always buying new socks! I found a bunch at Target yesterday that are insanely comfortable – Alaskan Knit. They are a little pricey, but I stocked up since I somehow manage to wear out socks like nobody’s business.
3. Have you seen this video of a cat pushing another cat down a set of steps? I couldn’t stop laughing!
4. The folks over at ThermoWorks (the company that makes my favorite instant digital thermometer, the Thermapen) contacted me to see if I wanted to check out a new product of theirs, the ChefAlarm. It’s a thermometer that works as an alarm – you set the target temperature and the thermometer beeps when it’s reached. This is such an awesome idea! No more sitting and staring at a thermometer. I tested it out when I made the apple cider caramels; I was actually unloading the dishwasher when the thermometer hit 252 degrees. I scooted over to the stove and finished the recipe. I love it!
5. This list on BuzzFeed of 55 Things Only ’90s Teenage Girls Can Understand is just fantastic. I can still smell the Cool Water… ;-)
6. It’s polite to celebrate, right?! (via Two Peas and Their Pod Facebook)
7. We handed out Halloween candy last night and, turns out, I majorly overestimated on the candy. Since it was our first year in this neighborhood, I wasn’t sure how many kids to expect (plus, I thought maybe kids still got dropped off in different neighborhoods) and didn’t want to run out of candy. I now have a serious candy stash; I have a feeling I’m going to be doing some candy baking soon!
8. How good is Homeland right now?! Each time an episode ends, I whine, “Nooooooooo”. Seriously. (I’m a champion whiner.) I think there should be a two-hour episode on every single night. This once a week business is nonsense.
9. I just saw this “How To Shower Like a Woman vs. How To Shower Like a Man” on Facebook recently. It’s hysterical and I’m pretty sure it’s nearly 99% accurate.
10. TGIF! If he could, Duke would totally make matching friendship bracelets for him and Einstein. BFFs, right there.
The holes in the socks issue – I have a possible reason. You just moved into a new home, correct? It looks like your new home has some tile floors with grout? When we moved into our new home a couple years ago, we noticed the same issue – our socks were getting holes at quite a quick rate. We realized it’s because our old house had all hardwood floors, and our new home had tile with grout. It’s the floor – the grout wears out the socks faster. That is, if you’re wearing socks in the house. If you’re not, then I’m no help ;) Our solution was to either get slippers (but the bottoms will wear out too) or get cheap socks to wear in the house because they will wear out and you’ll have to throw them away faster. I hope I solved a mystery! =)
Just can’t get enough of your blog or the pics of your precious pups! Thanks for all the great recipes. I definitely need to get that thermometer and the socks look great too.
I’m checking out that thermometer as soon as I finish this. Mine is starting to fail and it sounds like the perfect replacement. Yessss love Homeland. It’s the best show on TV!
That cat video is hilarious. Seems too funny to be true. Both your doggies (that’s what I like to call dogs) are super cute and adorable!
That is totally adorable, they are both very good looking dogs!
The Girl Talk game! How could I have forgotten about that! I felt so old yesterday, I wa talking to another mom at daycare, waiting for the kids costume parade, and they were playing the Ghostbusters song. I said something like “oh wow, I had he 45 record of this!” And she goes “what’s that?”
That man/woman shower post had me crying tears of laughter as I read it to my husband, who was also in stitches!! And that is the cutest picture ever of Einstein and Duke at the end of the post : )
So I was sitting in a hospital waiting room today and picked up a copy of the October 2013 issue of Ladies Home Journal and in an article from the Editor-In-Chief there you are…Michelle aka Brown Eyed Baker….you and several other Foodies are being welcomed in as the newest members of Ladies Home Journal Test Kitchen! How awesome is that for a Friday Thing! I felt such a surge of pride for you….for knowing you through your amazing recipies, Friday Things, and your Weekend Dish! I hope you do not mind me saying but your Grandmother would be so thrilled and proud of you! Congratulations on becoming a consultant, inspiration, sounding board and food expert for the magazine and all their readers! I will add, just so you know, that it is not uncommon for my teenage daughter and friends to whip up one of your recipes at 1:00 AM!! Thanks for inspiring them through your blogs, keep those recipes coming!!
Love your adorable dogs and so want the new alarm thermometer! You are a wealth of great information! Thanks for your talent!
That ’90s list is awesome!! The funny thing is, I totally remember seeing those ads in YM (my choice over Sassy).
Is it ridiculous that I STILL love “William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet” AND its soundtrack? (Yes, I replaced my VHS copy with a DVD.) And that I still happen to think Doc Martens are awesome?
Also, now that I have kids–how weird is it that we all wore onesies when we were in high school?
Michelle,
Did you forget to post the link for the video of the cats that you mention in Friday Things?! I’m a cat lover and would love to see it. THANK YOU!!!
Hi Lynn, The video is embedded above.
MIchele,
Have I mentioned that I love the puppy pics? The cat video is pretty funny too.
I only got one trick or treater. One year we got 28 and that was very much out of the ordinary.

I look forward to the Friday posts to see the new pics of your dogs. They’re so cute! I have a yellow lab puppy that just turned 5 months old, so I can relate to the puppy stages you are going through.
OMG I LOVE your dogs! They definitely look like BFFs!!! Thank you so much for sharing them! I look forward to all your blogs, but especially your Friday Things!
Aw he has got so big!!! And that thermometer sounds amazing!
Along with everyone else, I love your Fri updates and especially the pictures of the boys! It’s been fun watching Duke grow and seeing how these two have become BFF’s. Makes me want to find a BFF for our sweet dog, Levi. Thanks, BEB!
Love your doggie up-dates.That last picture of Einstein and Duke is sooo adorable! Duke has grown SO much! My neighbor got a black lab a couple months ago and can’t get over how big HE is!!
I look forward to the Friday post…. and your recipes posts never disappoint me.

Thanks for livening up my Friday morning with the cute dog pics and your “Friday Things”, it so much fun to read when I come in Friday mornings! I am always in need of socks. I keep getting these coupons for $5 or $10 off from DSW but I don’t ever seem to use them because when they come I am not in the market for shoes, it never occured to me to use them for something else so I decided the next time I get one I am going there to look for a pair of socks or tights, or even a scarf. This way the coupon doesn’t go to waste and I am staying replenished :). I will have to check out the socks at Target. I have a question on the chocolate you mentioned a few weeks back. I would like to buy some this year to use in my holiday baking but have forgotten what kind it was, you also mentioned someone introduced you to a website where you could find it. Would you mind sharing that information again? I think we turn the clocks back this weekend so yeahhhhh another hour to the weekend sounds like a pretty good idea to me! Have a great weekend!
Hi Lucy, It was Valrhona chocolate that I bought, and I used the website http://www.chocosphere.com. Their prices were a little lower than Amazon, and even with Amazon’s free shipping, it still ended up being less with Chocosphere. Happy chocolate shopping! :)
Oh my gosh, your puppy! He’s so, so gorgeous! My dog turned one in August, so this time last year was a bundle of gorgeous puppy smell, and ridiculous clumsiness! That photo of him curling up with your other dog makes me want another pup right this second…

OMGOSHHHHHHHH i loved this.
That last picture is PRICELESS!!!
I have a great deal of trouble handling all of this cuteness!
We seriously overestimated candy and glow bracelets in our new neighborhood too! Your pups are the cutest! I have a black Lab and am trying to decide if we need to get her a playmate:)
Your puppy dogs drew me in! Loving your Friday Things. =)
Aw he’s so adorable! He still looks quite puppy ish to me so appreciate this bit before he gets any bigger!
Honestly I look forward to your Friday Things more than any other email – Einstein & Duke are just too cute luv watching Duke grow. I too bought wayyyy too many Halloween treats so brought it ALL to work – they will be snacking for days!! P.S. your recipes are great too & congrats on your new marriage.
I too love Friday Things and always download the pictures of Einstein and Duke.. Old age took both of our dogs this past year and it’s the first time in 14 years not having one. Seeing your two brings me joy. Thanks for sharing your joy with us.
Oh they are so beautiful! We have two friends that got puppies this past summer and we can’t believe how big they got! Our “baby” is three and weighs 135 lbs! (She’s an English Mastiff!) Thanks for sharing!
Love the dog pics. Duke has some seriously big paws. I wonder If he will soon be bigger than his big brother. Thanks for sharing. It really is fun to see the changes.
My daughter is sitting with me while I look at these cute dogs!! She said the small one is her favorite! :) I seriously need that thermometer!!
Einstein looks just like my Derby–it’s unreal! Duke, you are turning into quite the MAN! So handsome. Funny you should mention socks–this morning I experienced the SAME THING!!!!!! HOLEY SOCKS, HOLY COW! There are so many cute ones in the many catalogs that find their way to my mailbox. I must buy SOCKS! Love Friday things!!!
Ahhh, they grow up so quick!! I remember the good old days of puppy breath. It smells like Corn Pops! lol Sigh… They are so darn cute! I love all of the photos of Duke and Einstein! I show my Husband every Friday when you post updates on your babies, he laughs and looks at me and says “NO”. Hmmm, wonder what he’s talking about?
Have a great weekend!
No kidding on the socks thing! How do they get holes in them over the summer, exactly? I have the coldest feet, so I’m definitely going to check out your brand recommendation at Target.
We actually, for once, had some Halloween candy left over! We do get lots of non-neighborhood kids, so I advised hubby to not be overly generous this year. He usually runs out half-way through trick-or-treating and the lights are off by the time my boy and I get home from our rounds, and we buy the giant Sam’s Club-size bags! We pulled out a few of our favorite varieties (100 Grands and Milky Ways for me), so I’ll have to pace myself with those.
Just love Friday Things, especially look forward to the puppy pics! The last picture is priceless. Almost looks as though Einstein is smiling! :)
There is NO WAY you wear out socks faster than I do. Not only socks but shoes, too. For me, 3 months is all shoes last, I must put some serious miles on my feet!
The dog pictures have got to stop, we have not had a dog for about 7 yrs and every time I see your two beauties, I want to get a dog. They are just too precious.
Thanks for the great recipes.
I thoroughly your Friday things. I have been the owner of golden retrievers in the past and they are the best dogs ever! I’m trying to convince my husband that we need another one. Thank you for sharing and the neat things you do w/us on your blog. Happy Friday!
Debie
Your dogs are seriously the cutest dogs ever. I love seeing them in your Friday post. By the way, thank you for all your awesome recipes. The Carmel’s are one I must try one day soon.
I love reading Friday Things and getting a new photo of Duke growing up each week….love the last photo of Duke and his BFF :-)
Lovely dogs! I usually read your blog but I’m not good writting in English… ;-)
Awww that last pic is soooo cute!! How old is Einstein? I love that they are friends :) Golden’s are my favorite dogs, they are gorgeous!
Einstein is 6, he will turn 7 in January :)
I love the pictures of Einstein and Duke!!! They are such handsome boys!!! They remind me so much of my golden boys…best friends! Also, I am a firm believer that you can never have too much candy! Have a great weekend!
I now have a serious candy stash; I have a feeling I’m going to be doing some candy baking soon! <—GOOD can't wait to see it! I am a huge candy-baker. As in one recipe a week (more if I'd let myself..lol0
That 90s girl list – love it. Sunflowers, Drakkar, Manic Panic, Sun-In, Caboodles, Snackwells – just reading this put me squarely back in time! WOW. Thanks for the memories!
Oh Duke you are getting so big! But no less adorable!
