Malted Chocolate Chip Blondies
I absolutely, positively love malt flavor in my baked goods. I first used malted milk powder in my own kitchen a few years ago when I made chocolate Whopper cookies, a malted vanilla milkshake, and malted milk ice cream, and then it was all over. I was officially smitten, and I was thrilled when I encountered a recipe that called for either malted milk powder or Ovaltine. (Does Ovaltine immediately bring to mind memories of the movie A Christmas Story, or is it just me?)
So, it totally stunned me when a reader left a comment on Facebook in relation to the Pretzel, Peanut Butter & Chocolate Malted Milkshake I made last week, asking me if I had made the malted blondies from the Baked cookbook.
What?! How on Earth had I missed this recipe?!
I’ve had that book for eons, and somehow, that recipe didn’t ring a bell at all. I immediately started flipping through it, and there it was, staring right back at me. Brewer’s Blondies. I remembered the name, but had never made them. That needed to be remedied, at once.
The next day, I got to work whipping up these blondies. I loved them for all of the reasons that I usually love blondies – they come together quickly with minimal equipment, and they are so rich tasting. These in particular tasted so much like toffee; totally fabulous!
These get their malted flavor from two distinct sources – malted milk powder that is whisked into the flour mixture, as well as coarsely chopped Whopper candies that sort of just meld into the final cooked blondie. I love how the malt flavor is balanced out by the sweet toffee and then everything topped off with a healthy dose chocolate chips.

Malted Chocolate Chip Blondies
Ingredients
- 2â…“ cups (291.67 g) all-purpose flour
- 1½ teaspoons (1.5 teaspoons) baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons malted milk powder
- 14 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1¾ cups (385 g) dark brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup (100 g) malted milk balls, like Whoppers or Maltesers candies, coarsely chopped
- 1 cup (180 g) semisweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and malted milk powder.
- Using an electric mixer, cream together the butter and brown sugar on medium speed until completely combined and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, add the eggs and vanilla, and beat until combined.
- Reduce the mixer speed to low and add the flour mixture in two batches, mixing just until combined. Add the malted milk balls and chocolate chips and beat until just combined, about 10 seconds. Turn the mixture out into the prepared pan and use an offset spatula to spread it evenly.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Transfer the pan to a wire rack and allow to cool for 20 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature. Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Hi Ruthie, I do not.
Made these for book club and the girls loved ’em! Froze the remaining squares and served them several days later at a potluck and they were a huge hit!!
Out of this world! I am loving these, they look fantastic! Malt and chocolate is the best combo!
I made this recipe the day it was posted bc I was so excited about MALT blondies. Hello yum! I love malt. These bars of gold were delicious–everyone loved them. However, I followed the recipe precisely and no one detected the malt flavoring, including me. I will make them again bc of there absolute goodness but I will put more malt powder in than is called for; hope this doesn’t change the texture
I’ve had the malted brownies from Baked, but have never made the brownies myself, thanks for the motivation to make my own at home, they look so tasty!
If we don’t have malted milk powder, can we just leave it out? I didn’t have $5 to spend on something when I would just be using two tablespoons of it. They didn’t come in smaller sizes. Thanks!
Hi Zainab, Yes, you could leave it out. You could also use Ovaltine (the original, not chocolate) if that’s something you keep on hand.
I left it out and it still tasted amazing! I actually added 1 tsp of vanilla pudding powder just because I thought I should add something and I had some left over from a previous cookie recipe of yours. Thank you and best wishes for you and the baby!
I love how the Whoppers melt in! That must taste amazing. And you make these look so great just with the pics alone.
LOVE anything malted….there is a really good one on chef in training too! Looks heavenly!!
Oh, how I love anything with malt in!! These look divine :)
I will have to give this a try but if you love malt you should try Chocolate Malted Milk Ball cupcakes with cherry frosting, delicious. I made them when my niece was three and hadn’t made them again until she requested them for her seventh birthday.
Hi there! I really enjoy your blog and have nominated you for the One Lovely Blog Award!

Favorite candy – malted milk balls. Thanks for another great recipe. I’ll make them for the next work event. Don’t dare keep a whole pan at home.

I think you made these just for me….. Im obsessed with malt balls so to put them in a blondie takes me to a very very happy place. After the day im having i could really use one of these.
Thank god for laziness or else I’d be about 40 lbs heavier. These look and sound amazing.

These look so thick and sinful! I love malt in baked goods. :)
I’ve made these before and they’re incredible – these look amazing!!
Mmm, I love the malted milk flavour but have never seen malted milk powder anywhere. I’ll have to start looking for some so I can try these, they look amazing!
My husband loves malt and he is going to just love this one for sure!
I usually make a malted vanilla bean ice cream base that is always requested and a great starting point for mix-ins. BUT…I just saw a posting from Baked Sunday Mornings for a Vanilla Bean Malt Cake from the Baked Explorations book…don’t recall seeing that one in the book but it’s now on my docket for baking either tonite or tomorrow.
Those look amazing! I haven’t ever used malted milk powder before but I have been itching to try it!
We made malted waffles this weekend topped with tart apple jelly and malted whipped cream. Just add 3 Tbsp of malt powder per cup of flour to your favorite waffle recipe.
Wow I love whoppers, so I’m going to love these blondies! As I guy can I get in trouble for saying that in front of my wife? In all honesty I’ve always liked brunettes a little more. :)
