The Weekend Dish: 5/28/2011
Happy long Memorial Day weekend to all of the folks in the U.S. and happy regular weekend to those of you elsewhere! This is the official-unofficial start to summer here and it looks like the weather is going to cooperate nicely here in the east. What are your weekend plans? Any cookouts or picnics? I enjoyed putting together some seasonal recipes this week, using rhubarb for the first time this year, whipping up a root beer float cake (which is now going to be a summer dessert staple for me!) and new ice cream. In related news, I managed to bake all week without using my KitchenAid mixer once (except to churn my ice cream, but that was using the attachment). I think that’s some sort of record!
In blogging news, a few food bloggers have put together a non-profit charity group called Bloggers without Borders. It will officially launch in July, but they are currently raising funds for the victims of the Joplin, MO tornado tragedy. To learn more, check out the post on Simple Bites. Kudos ladies, on a fabulous idea.

Rhubarb Pie-Tartlets – Lovely little rustic free-form tarts taking full advantage of peak rhubarb season.
Root Beer Float Cake – Root beer bundt cake topped with root beer fudge frosting. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and you have the perfect summer dessert!
Roasted Banana Ice Cream – Fabulous ice cream that tastes like a frozen piece of banana bread. Delicious!
