Friday Things #381
1. Nothing better than sitting outside and watching Daddy cut the grass!
2. The comments section of this post on family rituals and traditions is full of such wonderful ideas!
3. Last Sunday, our air conditioning stopped working (of course it was the hottest day of the year!). Luckily, we were able to have someone come out and there was a part that needed to be replaced that he had, so we were back up and running fairly quickly. Our immediate thoughts were how uncomfortable it was going to be if we needed to get a new unit or wait days for a fix, and then I reminded myself that I didn’t even have central air conditioning until I was 11! Perspective is always helpful :)
4. TRUTH! >>
5. Who has made the July Bake-Along recipe, butter pie crust? I love seeing all of your creations!
6. For the very first time in my life, I colored my own hair! I ordered a kit from Madison Reed and, all things considered, it went well! My grays are mostly all covered up and there were no major mishaps. It took a while since it was the first time, plus I have A LOT of hair. The kit came with a squeeze bottle which you sort of just worked in with your fingers (gloved, of course), but next time I would order the bowl and brush – I think I’d be able to ensure everything on the roots got covered up. I feel like I’ve unlocked some sort of badge, even though there are a gazillion people who color their own hair at home all the time, ha!
7. We are LOVING the Yacht Rock station on Sirius right now… if you like 70s and 80s soft rock, it’ll be right up your alley. We have it on most of the day :)
8. On another music note, my husband discovered Love Canon – a bluegrass band that covers 80s and 90s pop songs. So fun!
9. As for TV, we started watching Fargo (the series, not the movie)… it is so insanely strange, but we’re hooked ;-)
10. TGIF! These two wish you a wonderful weekend!
Loving Yacht Rock! Thanks so much for the recommendation!
I miss your posts with your monthly favorite things if you ever have a chance to get back to them. :)
Your daughter is looking like your twin!
Please thank your husband for the Love Canon recommendation! I am listening now and they are FANTASTIC!! Thanks for all you do and sharing your life.
When I was still working, I suggested we have cake at our Nursing Unit Manager’s monthly meetings to have something fun to look forward to.  Each of us took a turn until we were told we weren’t allowed to have cake anymore because …it was a meeting!  Jeez, some administrators need to get a life, don’t they!?  Re: co,luring your own hair…I did this for the duration of my home loan (18 years) as a way to save money.  Using a bowl and brush is much easier than with a squeeze bottle.  It is an accomplishment!  I too love Yacht Rock Radio and often listen to it at home and in the car along with The Bridge, The Blend, Hits 1 and a number of others whose names escape me.  PS I lived in Sydney Australia for 30 years and never had air conditioning!  Most older houses don’t!  If your house is made of brick, which many are, that keeps it cool in summer and warm in winter.  When the temp gets over 30 though, it’s still hot.  I finally got a ceiling fan in my bedroom which was wonderful!
I was planning on making the French Silk Pie…would u recommend the all butter pie or the ATK pie crust with the vodka ?
Both would be fabulous!!
Michelle,
I grew up in south Florida (still live there), and we didn’t have air conditioning until I was about 12. Our summers were hot & sticky, then, but it seems they’re even  more so now. I don’t know how we got through those hot summers without A/C. Well, we had plenty of fans! Glad you got your A/C fixed quickly !
Cute pics of the four-legged babies! Stay cool!
wow, no central air until 11??? What a rough life. There are so many people who still don’t have luxuries like that, it feels a little tone deaf to publicly lament not having AC for a day when so many people are struggling to make ends meet right now.
Seriously?? This is a happy place.
Thanks again for your fun and uplifting Friday Things-as much as I enjoy the baking stuff, the big smile on my face every Friday as I get to “socialize” with you and your family makes my day. First, before I forget, if your husband likes bluegrass, he should search for the band Row v. Wade (deliberate pun). No idea whether they’re on the music sites, but I found a CD in the remainder bin at Best Buy more than 20 years ago. They do fabulous bluegrass covers of soul classics from the ’60’s-’70’s, and the cover art is worth the price even without the music. Re. hair coloring, my 70-something cousin was despairing the closed salons in Joisey, since she had tried home coloring before and it was a disaster. Re. butter pie crust, I plan to make it once the weather cools off-Dad and I don’t dessert much beyond ice cream occasionally this time of year. Best to you all, keep safe, Peace, Buddy
Michelle, since Covid hit I’ve been coloring my hair at home too. I am probably about 95% gray in front, 50% in back. I buy professional color on Amazon. I love the Igora 10 series…it processes in ten minutes. And it’s much cheaper than buying box kits. The Igora website will help you through color selection.
The neighbor girl was outside while her dad cut the grass and the mower kicked up something that went into her eye and the eye had to be removed. I remember it like yesterday and it was over 50 years ago. Please have them watch from inside the house.
I enjoy your posts on Friday and the recap the next day. I’ve tried several of your recipes and we’ve gobbled them all up. Take care, Debby
Beautiful family (furries included).
Oh gracious, we love listening to Yacht Rock! It’s our go-to in the car. Unless my teenage nieces are with us, of course, lol. Then it’s the obnoxious KIIS FM.
I started doing Madison Reed back in April and ‘yes’ to the bowl and brush! Makes it so much easier. I don’t know if I’ll ever go back to having mine done in the salon now.
That Julia Child quote is spot on! Have a wonderful Friday!
Love #4…I just got a towel from Gloryhaus that has that exact saying on it! Â Thanks for your Friday thoughts…I enjoy reading them every week! Â
Hi Michelle – I LOVE that Julia Child quote! I have been going to Madison Reed for a couple of years now, but I can’t get my custom blend mailed to me, so my gray has fully grown out. I want to go back to the salon, but people tell me the gray looks good – not sure what I will do. The gray goes crown to ears & the natural auburn is below that!
When I bought my car (2 years ago, I think), I had free Sirius for a year. Yacht Rock Radio was one of my favorites & they were just trying it out for the summer. Fast forward to this year. I signed up for Sirius with a good offer. I listen every day at work & in the cat. Yacht Rock Radio is still one of my favorites.
Oh gosh! Thanks for love canon. Totally loving it.Â
