Chubby Hubby Rice Krispies Treats
Do you remember the amazing Chubby Hubby Truffles from a month or so ago? The truffles that I fashioned after my favorite ice cream of all time – Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby? For those of you who may not have heard of it, Chubby Hubby consists of vanilla ice cream chock full of peanut butter-filled, chocolate-covered pretzels. It got me through college, and I still can’t get enough of that flavor combination to this day. Given how much I loved the truffles, and how much you all said you loved the truffles, I started brainstorming about other things that I could put a chubby hubby spin on and came up with these peanut butter-pretzel Rice Krispies treats topped with chocolate. Talk about addicting!
Regular Rice Krispies treats get some peanut butter added to the melted marshmallows, and then in place of some of the Rice Krispies, you add pieces of crushed up pretzels, and I threw in some peanut butter chips for even more peanut butter flavor. Then, of course, they are topped with chocolate. If you want to up the chocolate factor, you could always throw some chocolate chips in with the peanut butter chips (or swap them). I think these have an awesome balance of all three flavors, and can’t stop eating them. Although that’s not necessarily surprising since I am a huge fan for Rice Krispies treats and am always a sucker for any fun variation on the classic recipe.
Do you have a favorite version of Rice Krispies treats? I always love finding new varieties!

Chubby Hubby Rice Krispies Treats
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 10.5 ounces (297.67 g) miniature marshmallows
- ½ cup (129 g) creamy peanut butter
- 4 cups (112 g) Rice Krispies cereal
- 2 cups (160 g) crushed pretzel pieces
- ½ cup (85 g) peanut butter chips
- 2 cups (360 g) semisweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish; set aside.
- Melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.
- Off the heat, add the peanut butter and stir until completely melted and smooth. Add the Rice Krispies cereal, pretzel pieces and peanut butter chips, stirring gently until all dry ingredients are coated. Turn the mixture into the prepared baking dish and press it into the pan, creating an even top.
- Microwave the chocolate chips on 50% power in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until completely melted and smooth. Pour the chocolate over the treats and spread in an even layer with an offset spatula. Let cool at room temperature until set, about 1 hour. (You can also refrigerate the treats for about 30 minutes to speed up the process.) Store leftovers at room temperature in an airtight container.

Do you think this could be made without peanut butter and still be so good? I need to make something for 35 cheerleaders and a few have peanut allergies. Ideas anyone?
Hi Debi, You could definitely leave out the peanut butter, they just won’t still be “chubby hubby”, more like “chocolate pretzel” :)
Hi,
Thanks for this recipe! Another one of your posts led me here, I love the embedded links. These were so good, I made them for a movie party. The pb was so creamy plus salty crunchy pretzels! The chocolate chips on top put me over the edge. I can’t get enough. I keep walking by and cutting off another little hunk, and another . . . I think it will be a staple in the house! Thanks for this creative delicious recipe!
does anyone know if it is okay to use ” natural peanut butter” or does it have to be standard no stir kind in order for recipe to work?
Hi Jill, You could use the natural peanut butter that does not require stirring or refrigeration – I believe that JIF and Skippy both make versions of this. I would stay away from the natural varieties that require stirring and refrigeration, as it’s generally too oily.
Help! This recipe totally frustrates me. I’m a pretty avid and adventurous cook/baker and thought these would be easy to whip up. I’ve tried twice now and always encounter the same problem…when I take the butter/marshmallow mixture off the stove and add the peanut butter, the mix starts to stiffen to the point that nothing can be added to it. What am I doing wrong? Please help. Thanks!
Hi Rachel, It sounds like either the heat was too high or the mixture is on the heat too long if it seizes up.
Michelle, I had exactly the same experience as Rachel did. Tried two batches. Same thing happened to each. I am at the point withe the 2nd batch, where I have added the Rice Krispies to the melted butter, marshmallow, peanut butter and the Rice Krispies. Very difficult to mix up. I am determined to not give up like I did with 1st batch. I don’t think I had heat too high, as I melted the ingredients very slowly onal low. Maybe as you suggest, I left mixture on the low heat too long, as I was afraid that if I let it start to cool, then it would stiffen (as in first batch). When it became too stiff to handle anyway, I tried adding another Tbsp of melted butter, but that did not help. Can you suggest what I can do now to save this batch? i.e. warm up in oven, or make balls out of the unevenly mixed mixture? I would like your suggestions, please. Thank you.
I have made 5 batches of them and have eaten at least 4 of them myself! As a new mom who is not getting much sleep and relying on sugar to keep me awake, these have come in handy at all hours of the day! I have even upped the pretzel/krispie ratio because I love the addition of the salty. Everyone goes crazy for them, on the rare occasion to choose to share! Thanks for this one!!
I made these tonight and your focaccia! These came out fantastic! I mistakenly purchased chocolate and peanut butter morsels but they turned out awesome! Just a little more peanut butter deliciousness! The focaccia I tweeked a bit (having worked in a bakery for years) but still came out great! Great website!! Thanks for sharing all your recipes!
I made these last night and they were absolutely delicious! Thanks for sharing!
Making me so hungry! Those look deelish
My favorite version is a Pumpkin Spice Krispie Treats that I make with Erewhon’s Crispy Brown Rice Cereal. My son ate 2 batches really quickly and wants more. Made me make a batch to bring to our friends house on Christmas Day. She loved them too.
This looks amazing too. I may make these for Valentine’s Day – for my Valentine – Hubby of 22 years who is a PB fanatic. Thanks for making me sooo hungry.
Just found your blog and am excited to explore!
These do sound delicious. For me, a key flavor in Chubby Hubby is the malt in the vanilla ice cream. I’m going to try these with some malt powder stirred in. I’ll let you know how they turn out.
I made these and brought them to work.. GONE… yup.. they were a hit..
These treats look awesome! I feel compelled to feature you in my Friday Food Fetish roundup and on Pinterest. Let me know if you have any objections and keep the amazing food coming…
Hi there, No objections, thank you for including me!
I too love rice Krispy treats. I love to use other cereals instead of rice krispys. I especially like to use multi grain Cheerios, mix in dried cherries, dark chocolate chips and slivered almonds.
These sound amazing! Must make with SunButter!
My hubby would kill for these. He loves all of these elements!
Why yes, I do see these awesome krispy treats in my future! I have to admit though, my favorite are the kinda stale plain old fashioned ones you find in the wrapper at gas stations and things. They age like a fine wine ;)
Great recipe Michelle! My father was Italian, and my mother was French/Canadian. Food was front and center at every French/Canadian event. I know I will love this recipe, because I like the crunch of crushed pretzels in any gooey dessert. I can’t wait to look at your other recipes! My favorite rice krispie square is the Butterscotch Treats at ricekrispies.com that incorporate a bit of butterscotch pudding mix into the recipe, which I change up by pouring on my favorite chocolate frosting. I don’t like to wait for the squares to cool, and this frosting can be poured on the hot squares, or on hot brownies, or hot baked cakes, right out of the oven. Enjoy! Lyn

Love the idea of including the pretzels. That salty sweet taste is the best.
Oh, these sound just incredible. They use so many of my favorite ingredients!
I absolutely LOVE Chubby Hubby and I love homemade Rice Krispies treats (pre-packaged from a store?! Forget it!) So, I’m sure this is amazing!
Have you tried scotcheroos before? It’s the same idea as these bars but with butterscotch chips melted into the chocolate on top. So. Good. The recipe is on the Rice Krispies website (it’s super simple and only needs one measuring cup!).
Hi Rachael, Yes, love Scotcharoos! https://www.browneyedbaker.com/2010/06/29/scotcheroos/
These just sound delish!!! Have you ever tried using special K cereal with the strawberys in them in place of the rice krispies? The strawberrys end up flavoring the marshmallows and are so yummy. My mother use to make something like this with reg. Special K cereal and pb. and chocolate on top though. Will have to hunt for this recipe too! Oh I am sooo hungry now!!!
These look amazing!! I’m definitely going to have to try these
those look great!
Confession: I’ve never had Chubby Hubby Ice cream. I know, it’s terrible – – your description of the ice cream alone has me drooling. In the mean time, I’ll make do with this killer rice krispy treats
oh crap – I just gained three pounds reading this. Looks amazing!
What great tasting Rice Krispie treats. I love the addition of the peanut butter chips. Great recipe.
The most delicious things always seem like they should have been obvious all along, right?! Why are all Rice Krispie treats not made this way?!
My mother will melt butterscotch chips in with the chocolate topping! To die for!
Love the addition of salted pretzels! Fabulous recipe.

I’m SO sending this to a friend who is obsessed with rice krispie treats. YUMMO!
none
These sound SO good! I like making cake batter rice krispie treats- just add 1/4 cup of cake mix to the marshmallow mixture before adding the rice krispies. They are best when topped with sprinkles, and they go over VERY well! :)
I love this!!
Wow, I could use a pan of these for breakfast today! They look amazing!
OMG! I always though Chubby Hubby was how you referred to your Husband! lol These look fantastic!! I think I need to make these, anything with peanut butter and chocolate is going to be good, hopefully I won’t eat the whole pan. I’ll be calling you when I gain 5 more lbs. :)
Wow! These look incredible! My favorite rice crispie treat recipe involves mixing a heaping 1/2 cup of cake mix into the marshmallow. It doesn’t quite taste like cake exactly, but they taste really amazing :)
I could devour those all in one sitting.
Wow…these sound good. I make traditional RK treats but I add peanut butter to melted chocolate and spread that over the treats. The addition of pretzels
sounds really good! I would love to see the recipe from Austrailia…Mars Slice! Bring it on!
I think I have saved every Rice Krispie treat recipe you have posted. I loved the Reece’s peanut butter cup ones. Sooo addicting!
I also love making Rice Krispie treats with seasonal marshmallows. I have posted a few on my site like Pumpkin Spice with Maple Cream Cheese Frosting. Those are always fun!
And sometimes I actually like the simplicity (and fewer calories) of plain old Rice Krispie treats!
Can you believe that I can’t find Chubby Hubby Ice Cream here ANYWHERE? They have New York Fudge Superchunk…Chunky Monkey…no CHUBBY HUBBY!! :(
I’ll have to satisfy myself with these instead. They look great!!
We used to make this exact thing all the time in college-LOVE rice krispie treats, they are so addicting!
I forget how much I love rice krispie treats….
I am in love.
These look and sound amazing!
yeah, these could never be bad
Oooooh, I go weak in the knees for this! :) Looks amzaing.
Love this! Definitely another great way to get peanut butter and chocolate into a delicious dessert for me:-)
I love RKTreats..the more add-in’s, chips, extras, PB and the like I can add, I do. I love basically making every but the kitchen sink bars :)
First time, long time :) Your chubby hubby krispies sound great. Have you heard of mars bar slice? It is something of an institution here in Australia, a no bake slice based on rice bubbles (krispies) and mars bars! Happy to share if you’re keen.
Hi Kim, I have never heard of those, but they sound amazing! I’d love the recipe if you’d like to share!
Michelle, here is the link to a Mars bar slice recipe :) Some of the quantities are in metric, but shouldn’t be too hard to convert. Hope you enjoy it!

Thank you Kim! I’m wondering if there is a good substitute for the Copha, as you can’t get it here in the U.S. (although I saw it is available on Amazon). Could coconut butter or oil be used? Or vegetable shortening? What do you think?
Hi Michelle. To be honest, I would just omit it. I’ve made mars bar slice many times and have never bothered to melt copha into the chocolate and I generally don’t bother to use cooking chocolate for the topping either – just a good quality “eating quality” milk chocolate (that would be cadbury’s here in Oz!)
What a delicious take on a gorgeous ice cream (which I am now craving actually :D)
These look amaaaazing. I think fancy Rice Krispie treats are becoming a thing. I’ve been drooling over a caramel macadamia Rice Krispie treat I saw on a blog a few days ago, and now I’m coveting these as well!
