Friday Things #377
1. We had a big milestone for our little family last Sunday – we all went out for soft-serve ice cream! Up until now, it had been completely off-limits due to Joseph’s peanut allergy, but since he crossed the threshold for cross-contamination a few weeks ago, we were comfortable going and still alerting them of his allergy. The boys were SO excited to go and everyone enjoyed them so much; it was a perfect way to celebrate Father’s Day 😍
2. Have you had Morning Summit cereal? I put it on one of my Costco orders a couple of months ago and I am obsessed. It’s delicious and it keeps me full for SO LONG (unlike any other cereal I’ve ever eaten)!
3. I love the meme that keeps popping up about 2020: “This was supposed to be the summer of George!” (I love a good Seinfeld reference.) On that note, I’m loving this list of 20 Summer Activities You Can Do At Home.
4. A couple of weeks ago I saw someone ask in a FB group I’m in for suggestions on keeping on top of household routines. The one piece of advice that was repeated over and over again was to put a load of laundry in before bed using the “delay start” function and have it run so it finishes shortly before you get up. Come down, switch it to the dryer, and boom! It’s done after breakfast. I’ve been doing this (I had never used the delay start before) and omg, it is such a GAME CHANGER. I collect everyone’s dirty laundry while the kids are brushing teeth and getting ready for bed, and then in the morning I can fold the clean stuff after breakfast and head upstairs to get the kids dressed for the day and put the clean laundry away. I literally cannot express how much I love this system!
5. I am in love with this rounded v-neck tee and bought it in four different colors. So comfortable, light, and has a looser, breezy fit. Do you have a favorite piece of clothing you’re wearing this summer?
6. Have you tried the peach crumb bars from wayyyyyy back in 2009? They’re a cult favorite!
7. If you were a child of the 80’s (or even 90’s I guess!), did you read The Babysitter’s Club books? I LOVED them and just saw that Netflix made a series out of the books that’s dropping on July 3rd. I wish Isabelle were a bit older and we could watch together!
8. Did you see the story about Augie, the 20-year-old Golden Retriever? She just had a birthday and broke the record for the world’s oldest Golden Retriever. My favorite part of the story is that her owners adopted her when she was 14 years old ❤️️
9. We are still moving through Downton Abbey and sooooo into it! Glad that there’s a movie when can watch when we get to the end of the series :)
10. TGIF! Wishing you a great weekend!
What is it about sprinkles that we all seem to love so much…not just as kids. I still gravitate towards the cookie or ice cream that has sprinkles to this day. It’s so fun to read about everyone’s little cleaning “quirks.” I’m a weirdo and so enjoy doing laundry, folding. It’s just me and 2 kittie girls and I probably do 3 loads a week. I keep their blankets clean, and my bed quilt. They actually are happy when I’ve laundered the stuff.
Beautiful story about August the golden senior. But pretty sad that she had been re homed 2 times. God willing I’d never have to give up any furry baby. I love them like they were my kids…
Any pet of mine.
Thanks for the refresh on peach crumble bars. I dont have any sweet peaches, or I’d make it. I will check Costco.
Pretty pic of your doggie. Their fur always looks so clean and pretty. You’re such a good Mommy to them all.
P.s. love how Isabelle is peeking out from her very cool sunglasses. I also sooo adore Dominic’s orange shoes. 😊
Just a “thank you!” again for Friday Things and the great baking help, and your great pix of the kiddos and the dogs. Soft-serve was pretty new when I was a kid and I loved it because it meant summer! Almost as much as sky-blue-pink popsicles from the trucks. As for clothing, Aloha and seersucker shirts, and this year, my “Knock It Off” t-shirt. It became Gov. Gina’s (here in RI) catchphrase in her early daily Covid press conferences, for the idiots who refused to believe there was a problem, and our local crazies at Frog and Toad gift shop ran with it. I also have the face masks, but I missed out on the local brewery’s “Knock It Off” beer. Bummer. Keep safe out there! Wish I could still sprawl on a cool floor like that.
With just two in my household, laundry happens at the end of the week. I usually get two loads done while making/eating dinner and fold them before we go to bed. The bleached whites always go in last and those I do run over night and stick in the dryer when I wake up so they can be folded and put away after breakfast. We simply don’t generate enough laundry to wash more than once a week.
The rounded v-neck is super cute! I would not get it because of the pocket though – I’ve discovered shirt pockets don’t sit well on my curves. I love 100% cotton or linen for their breathability though. A linen blend isn’t bad but if I can get it all linen I am stoked! Target usually has some decent plain 100% cotton v-neck shirts, and those are on a solid rotation in my wardrobe.
Omg! I think I read every Babysitters Club book from that era! I will have to check out the Netflix show.
That list fo 20 home summer activities really makes me wish I had a back yard. An apartment with no balcony isn’t conducive to some of those fun looking activities.
Your kiddos look so cute with their sprinkle ice cream cones! It sounds like a fun weekend activity!
I love watching your kids grow up – seemingly overnight! – as I have grandchildren around their ages, and older ones too. I have 2 granddaughters, cousins, who are right around your Isabelle’s age, one a blondie like yours and one a dark curly haired beauty and I see her hitting milestones around the same time as they do. Such a sweet age. No terrible twos here! I discovered the Morning Summit cereal at Costco before the quarantine days and was impressed by the nutrition info on the box. We love the taste and crunch and also find it very filling. The only think I don’t care for in that mix are the whole almonds. They are way too hard in comparison with the yummy clumps of crunchy stuff and the other sliced almonds and other nuts. When no one is looking, I toss the almonds in my bowl back into the cereal container as my husband and son don’t mind the almonds as much! I have been keeping my supply up with Instacart deliveries. Best of luck to you and your family in these trying times. Stay safe!
Augie, the Golden Retriever, looks like I feel half the time. I’m into greyhounds; currently on my fourth. We adopted her last year at age 7! She raced quite successfully & had two litters of puppies before coming up for adoption. Older dogs have more going for them than people realize. The youngsters are a lot of work.
Aww your dog is so adorable <3 And well-noted on the 20 Summer Activities You Can Do At Home xD
Loved Downton Abby too. I didn’t watch when it was first out, but PBS recently played the whole series one weekend. My DVR was working overtime. Watched 2 shows at a time. I can see how people really got into it. The movie was good also. The university my daughter went to has a “house” called Meadow Brook Hall built around that time owned by Matilda Dodge, which you can tour. Really decked out for the holidays. The Honors college at the university offered a Downtown Abby course which she was able to take. It was a favorite class for many. So happy for your family being able to get ice cream. It may seem like a simple thing to some , but it’s one of the fondest memories of my childhood . Getting an ice cream cone when the Dairy Queen opened for summer.
LOVE the pics of the ice cream photos! Reminds me of summers at the beach. There’s something about soft serve vanilla ice cream w/ sprinkles!
Isn’t the 20 yr old Golden Retriever the best?! Gives me hope for our Labrador, who is 6!
Yes about The Summer of George! One of our neighbors was saying, a few months back, all the upcoming things he was supposed to be doing, & would miss out on bc of COVID. My first thought was, it was supposed to be his Summer of George!
Have a great weekend!
I did make the peach crumb bars for my dad lately. I had extra peach filling from making pie and this recipe was perfect for it.
It isn’t summer until you’ve had your first ice cream at your local ice cream stand, and your kiddos are certainly enjoying theirs! My son finally tried making the no knead bread and we couldn’t believe how easy it easy to make. Judith or Duke? looks lovely and groomed for the picture. Happy weekend!
Something I came across last night when looking for recipes where I can use some of my cherries. Thought you might be interested. https://www.averiecooks.com/chocolate-chip-and-cherry-blondies/
Oh. my gosh, I saw the story of Augie on the CNN website and thought of you and your pups. Augie has such a sweet face and I imagine a very sweet nature as well. It is nice to know she has a wonderful couple caring for her.
I can only imagine how special it was for your kids ( and you and your husband)to have their first soft serve…an ice cream right of passage. They are all old enough to really remember how special it was for them and will be able to tell their kids about it. Sometimes special memories happen when we least expect them.
Have you ever gotten peaches from The Peach Truck? Their taking pre-orders this year. I’m in SW Ohio, and they just made their first run through here. I know they make stops in Pittsburgh. They are the BEST peaches!
