While I love pizza all year round, it certainly seems to become more of a staple as the weather cools. Not only do we find ourselves ordering in more often, but pizza just seems like the perfect option when you’re sitting down to watch a football or hockey game. Even better is that there is now a yeast available for pizza crusts that doesn’t require a rise time so that you can have homemade pizza in two shakes of a lamb’s tail (more on that in a minute – the yeast, not the lamb). I have no idea how I went my entire life without having a BBQ chicken pizza. It’s fabulous!! This is an especially useful way to use up any leftover chicken you have in the fridge. Feel free to use my recipe below as a guide and add whatever ingredients you like – black beans, chopped tomatoes, and avocado would be great additions.
The yeast I used for this pizza is a new line by Fleischmann’s that was designed specifically for pizza crust. The Pizza Crust Yeast has been formulated in such a way that it eliminates rise time and the associated worry that for some reason it might not rise. I was pretty excited to try this. Even though I love my very favorite pizza crust recipe perhaps more than life itself, sometimes you just don’t want to have to wait, and sometimes you just don’t want to drag out your mixer or food processor. This pizza crust yeast provides the perfect alternative. I mixed it in one bowl, with a wooden spoon and then kneaded on the counter, pressed the dough into a pan and topped it and baked it. Less than 40 minutes from when I began until I pulled the pizza out of the oven. It doesn’t get much better than that! On top of the convenience, I really enjoyed the texture and flavor of the crust. It got crisp, but not too crunchy and still had a bit of the chewy factor that pizza crust is known for. I know many people who are intimidated by homemade pizza due to the yeast factor, so I hope this new product gives some of you who may have been hesitant to try yeast-based recipes before the confidence to give this one a shot!

BBQ Chicken Pizza
Serves about 8
For the Crust:
1¾ – 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 envelope Fleischmann’s Pizza Yeast
1½ teaspoons sugar
¾ teaspoon salt
2/3 cup very warm water (120° to 130°F)
3 Tablespoons olive oilFor the Toppings:
1½ cups cooked, shredded chicken
½ cup + 2 Tablespoons barbecue sauce, divided
4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
¼ red onion, thinly sliced
2 green onions, thinly sliced
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
2. Combine 1 cup flour, yeast, sugar and salt in a large bowl. Add water and oil. Mix together until well blended; about 1 minute.
3. Gradually add ½ cup flour until soft dough ball is formed; will be slightly sticky. Add additional flour if needed to form dough ball.
4. Knead on a floured surface, adding additional flour if needed, until smooth and elastic; about 4 minutes. With floured hands, press dough out to fill a greased pizza pan, or roll dough into a 12-inch circle and transfer to a greased pizza pan.
5. Mix together the shredded chicken and 2 Tablespoons of barbecue sauce.
6. Spread ½ cup of the barbecue sauce over the pizza dough. Top with chicken, bacon, onions and cheese.
7. Bake on the bottom oven rack for 12 to 15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and the crust has browned.

The best pizza I ever had was in Italy. It had gone into the stone oven with nothing but tomato sauce and a salty prosciutto, and when it came out hot and sizzling it was instantly topped off with argula and mascarpone. I never thought a pizza could be more than “okay”. I was wrong

My favorite type of pizza is hands down a white slice with spinach. If that isn’t available I’ll take a regular white slice or a slice of plain cheese. Living in NY good pizza is usually not that hard to find.

I love this. I have been intimidated by bbq pizza- as a NYer, I like the old school ingredients but I think this would be awesome for a football party to switch it up. THis recipe makes it seem easy! I like to keep it simple. Pizza Marghertia is my fave – Roma tomatoes, mozzarella, and sometimes I subsitute pesto for the basil leaves.
Homemade pizza is the best!! I love (almost) any toppings, but my favorite would be sausage, mushrooms, and extra cheese!

It sounds kind of strange but my favorite pizza is a red sauce pizza with dollops of mashed potatoes and crispy bacon topped with mozz! It’s amazing. The best I’ve had is at Bar in New Haven, CT. I keep meaning to try to make it at home.

i love a white pie. a thin, crispy crust lightly brushed with good olive oil and doused with chilli flakes. a layer of fresh mozzarella slices, lots of garlic, some basil and maybe some little artichoke hearts. oh YUM.

This sounds really weird but is strangely good – mashed potatoes, crumbled bacon, sauteed onions and red pepper and of course cheese.

Yummy!! We LOVE extra cheese, pepperoni or sausage and lots of black olives on our pizza. My four year old son LOVES to make his own – from the dough to the toppings – he’s a great pizza chef! We haven’t had a family pizza night since my husband has been home – he was away for 20 months in the military – so wow – what a great opportunity to host an even bigger and better party! I love pizza in general and I am not picky when it comes to toppings. After my recent visit to NYC though I have seemed to become more of a minimalist. Thin crust, a nice fresh sauce, fresh basil leaves and fresh sliced mozzarella (but light on the cheese).
I love fresh mozzerella with fresh basil and tomatoes (with sun-dried tomatoes is yummy too)…delicious!

I like a mango tandori chicken pizza. It’ has mango sweetness and a bit spicy.
Our standard order is sausage, pepperoni, and onion along with extra cheese and lots of red pepper flakes which we add ourselves. However my son introduced me to the BBQ chicken concept and we embelished our brains out and has made this combo second favorite to the afore mentioned.

i actually made homemade pizza last week, and it was the best pizza i have ever tasted!: red sauce, italian blend cheese, sauteed spinach, ham, artichokes, black olives, and a little sprinkle of red pepper flake! grocery shopping out of my pantry never tasted so good!

And the pizza dough we adore is on the back of the Hodgson Mills whole wheat flour container. My mom made pizza every Thursday while we were growing up—remember when Thursday had the best t.v. shows? And her dough is awesome for tossing, so we use it every once in a while.

I used to would have said pepperoni immediately, but now I find it overly spicy. I’d rather have a pizza with lots of cheese on it (mozzarella, chedder, provel – just to name a few).

We are a pizza loving family and make them at home all the time. My all time favorite though is pepperoni, ground beef that’s been cooked with taco seasoning, onions, garlic (gotta have lots of da garlic!!!), tomatoes, avocado, and cheese. Yum.

We have two favorite homemade pizza combos. The first is fried eggplant, mozzarella, roasted garlic, green olives, fresh basil and homemade sauce. The second is a potato pizza with sautéed onions and garlic, sliced roasted potatoes, drizzled with olive oil and fresh rosemary. Delish!

Now if only I could find that new pizza dough yeast here. Alas it isn’t to be found in these parts, at least not yet I’m sad to say. But your pizza pic is mouthwatering!
