Friday Things
1. Dominic had his 1-month checkup this week and he’s growing like a weed! He gained a whopping 13 ounces since his last weight check 15 days prior, and has grown 2 inches since birth. He’s already too long for most of his newborn sleepers and pants. I guess it’s already time to bust out the 3-month clothes!
2. Daylight savings time really threw Joseph for a loop this year. I was wholly unprepared for any issues because last year it wasn’t an issue at all – he got up maybe a half hour earlier for a couple of days and then was back to his normal wake-up time. THIS year, however, was a totally different story. He had been waking up between 7:00 and 7:30 for months now; on Sunday and Monday mornings, he woke up, wide awake, at 5:15am. Oof. Since then it’s been around 6:30, which isn’t AWFUL, but here’s hoping he gets back to 7-7:30 before too long!
Also, unrelated, he has started taking my oven mitts out of the drawer, putting them on, and standing in front of the oven. This kid is just the best.
3. Getting back to daylights savings for a minute… boy does it make me not want to a thing in the evenings! Once it gets dark around 5:30, I feel like it’s time for pajamas, the couch and a big blanket.
4. Have you given any thought to holiday gifts yet? If you’re going the homemade route, these peppermint spoons look absolutely adorable (and easy!).
5. Absolutely in love with this story about Sally, the 97-year-old who walks dogs at a local shelter every single day.
6. This massive pillow chair might be the most comfortable thing ever invented.
7. What are your favorite notebooks? I’ve used Martha Stewart notebooks for years, but I don’t think they’re sold anymore. I like an 8×11 notebook with college ruled lines, but with thicker weight paper. Any suggestions? I keep a few handy for different types of planning.
8. I absolutely need this >> How to Style Your Bookshelves
9. Are you a Gilmore Girls fan? Are you planning to binge the special coming out on Netflix in a couple of weeks? It’s been so, so long since I’ve watched it that I might need a little refresher!
10. TGIF! A little throwback to Duke as a 5-month old puppy!
Just catching up! I have the exact same Solly Baby wrap and I’m so excited to learn how to use it with our new little one… she’ll be here in just a few weeks! How do you like it? Any tips/tricks you’ve picked up so far?
Holiday gifts – coworkers are getting the usual homemade goodie basket. This year it’s buckeyes, pumpkin spice caramel thumbprints, and hopefully some kind of cheddar bread (savory). Maybe chex mix as well. The first two are already made and frozen! Trying to get ahead of the game as much as possible so I can get these delivered before going on maternity leave… haha!
Hi Katy, Oh so excited for your soon-to-be-here little one! I LOVE it! It’s been especially helpful when Dominic just wants to be held and I can still give Joseph attention. I watched the tutorial on their website for tying the wrap – it took a few times to get it down, but now I can do it super quickly!
Just realised I didn’t receive Friday Things this week and then I realized I hadn’t received the other posts either. Do I need to resubscribe? I love your blog. It all started with the Hot Fudge Sauce!
I too would like to thank you for not posting your political view on your blog. I was afraid to read at first because it seems every blog is expressing the sky is falling. Your boys are adorable and you are lucky to work at home to enjoy this precious time with them.
Dominic is so cute and growing so quickly! Joseph is just so precious! He really makes me smile. Yes, the early darkness makes me want to put on my jammies and wrap up in a blanket!
Hahaha I am soooooo in my pj’s, watching tv, wrapped up in a blanket by 5:30pm ? Glad I’m not the only one who longs for that hehehe. And sooooooo excited for Gilmore Girls return!!! Is it wrong to Netflix binge on all the past episodes?!
I bought these notebooks, and I really like them – the pink makes me smile whenever I pick it up. Paper isn’t real heavy, but I bought them anyway because the paper is recycled. Not as pricey as others, though to get the best price, you need to buy 5. I also *love* the Levenger books that someone else suggested – when I want to splurge a little. http://www.quill.com/rediform-pink-ribbon-executive-notebooks-8-1-2×11/cbs/206113.html?hidedisruptive=1&cm_mmc=SEM_PLA_OS_206113&mcode=SEM_PLA_OS_206113&gclid=Cj0KEQiA9ZXBBRC29cPdu7yuvrQBEiQAhyQZ9HqSCI5AaeA5M_UPhEP3tTyhL_zg54yg8y9J7l-4R4gaAtFd8P8HAQ
Gilmore Girls is on Netflix…
I really enjoy following your blog (especially as a fellow Pittsburgher!). This isn’t related to cooking, but I was wondering if you are wearing a silly wrap with your little one? If so, do you like it? I am expecting my first and am looking for a nice wrap to help me to be a bit more hands-free with baby!
Hi Rachael! Yes, it’s a Solly wrap (I think that’s what you meant?). I love it! It was tricky to figure out at first, but after putting it on twice I can do it in about 30 seconds now :) Dominic is doing a much better job at napping now, but for the first 4-5 weeks, he was really only happy being held. It’s SO helpful to be able to keep him snuggled close but also have your hands free!
I LOVE daylight savings time (thats when we spring AHEAD – the latest time change was actually daylight savings time ENDING) I HATE getting off work in the dark. I am like you, once its dark I am so less motivated!!! Call me crazy, but I never understand the big deal with either time change as far as sleep/tiredness goes (yes, I have a kid); its only 1 hour. Have these people never traveled anywhere that has a different time zone?! Or stayed up too late past their bed time and had to function on less sleep?? Am I missing something?
Have you tried keeping Joseph up a little later, until his internal clock adjusts to day light savings time? Might work?!
Happy Friday Michelle! Dominic is really getting big! Isn’t it amazing just how quickly they grow! I have a granddaughter and grandson who are already 4 and 6 and I can’t believe where the time has gone since they were babies, I just marvel at all they have accomplished and grown in that time. Have a great weekend! Such adorable pictures!!!!
Love that Joseph is ready to start baking! As for planners, I just recently started using Passion Planners. http://www.passionplanner.com. They are really cool. They come in both dated and undated that you can start anytime. They have places to include goals, challenge yourself, best things that happened this week, and lots more. Also the pages are thick so ink doesn’t bleed through!
Love the story about the 97 lady who walks dogs! Thanks for sharing that! ?? That might be me one day! Have a great weekend with all your guys!
Love the picture of Joseph! My 21month old little man does the same. He loges to play with the oven gloves and kitchen utensils. So here in Belgium, we have Sinterklaas on the 6th of december, and one of his gifts will be the play kitchen from Ikea.
Waiting for a breakfast! Did a batch of berry lemon zest refrigerator muffins…hope they ‘re nearly as good as I can imagine.. I love the concept- used to do ‘bran mix’ years ago! Your boys are soooo precious! looks like Joseph has his eye on a dream future!! Thanks for your wonderful journey, and letting me tagalong! I’m off FB til politico dies down a bit. Happy Veteran’s Day- was my Dad’s birthday (11-11-11) and never goes without being special!!
Papersource.com has some beautiful and very sturdy notebooks.
Whew! 5:15 is rough! I too, like Joseph, woke up early on Sunday. Going back to standard time always make me happy for the extra hour of sleep, but this year it didn’t quite work out that way with waking up early . . . grrrrr!
That picture of Duke – I love when they look out the window. My girl will just lie froggy-legged in front of our door taking the outside all in. Every so often there will be a low rumble from her when she thinks she sees something. You can see his puppy fur and adult fur mixing in.
I am hearing you on the notebook dilemma. The pages are so thin that the ink bleeds through and to use a page double-sided is impossible. I’m going to have to look at some of those links above. But it costs a fortune to get a decent notebook! UGH!! Keep us posted on if and what you find please :)

You could get Joseph one of these and put it in the corner of your kitchen. Good for them to start learning to cook early. Makes them self reliant when they get older and move away from home. All my Brothers are good cooks, know how to do laundry clean house and can do handyman work too LOL
Love this idea. With LOTS of toy play food. So fun!!
As a diehard Gilmore Girls fan, I can tell you that both Freeform and Up have reruns everyday. In Pittsburgh, on Freeform two episodes starting at 11:00 AM and on Up starting at 5:00. (#of episodes varies depending on the day). And starting on Nov. 18, Up will be running a marathon of the entire series. You can also get them on Netflix. My two daughters already have our menu planned for the new episodes: coffee, donuts, pizza, Chinese food and red vines!
I really need to watch that video on bookshelves. Mine are used for, well books. Lots and lots of books. Lots of cookbooks :-( And I would like to know who decided on daylight savings time. Why can’t we just keep the same time year round — one or the other. And your boys are so cute. My gosh I remember my oldest doing the same thing with the oven gloves. Good grief they grow up so fast. Have a wonderful weekend.
For notebooks like you described, check out Levenger “Notabilia” notebooks. There’s both a classic style and a ‘to do’ journal. I think you’ll find them comparable to the ones you’ve been using? http://www.levenger.com/Notabilia-Notebooks-(set-of-two)-Core-2438.aspx
PS Love your Friday Things posts! :)
I just want to thank you for not posting your political views on your food blog! I don’t care how you voted and I don’t want to know. I love your blog and although I don’t bake a lot, I enjoy the recipes! Your boys are so cute and your Friday blog is my favorite. I have been so disappointed in the blogs I follow posting their political views, whether I agree with their views are not, I prefer not to know! Yes it is their right but if I want to read about politics, I will read the news! Thank you again!
Hi Donna, Oh you’re welcome! There’s enough of it everywhere else, right?!
I have to agree with Donna – I love having a politics free zone! Also, my dad made your skillet apple pie the other night and immediately called to rave about it. Then, when I talked to him a couple days later, he was STILL talking about it. It’s now on my Thanksgiving menu. With a 3 yr. old, a 1 yr. old, and one on the way – I needed a delicious but simple Thanksgiving dessert. Thanks!
