Friday Things #416
1. I found these two on the couch like this and it made my heart explode 😍
And this one is getting SO BIG (and all those missing teeth, ha)! He sat next to me on the couch yesterday, snuggled up and hugged me, then said, “Mommy, I am just so happy every day” ❤️️ I want to bottle up these moments with them all and freeze time.
2. Isabelle’s hair is still pretty fine, but it’s wavy and curly. Anyone with experience with little girl’s hair – any shampoo/conditioner or product recommendations? I’ve been using Suave Purely Fun 3-in-1 for her hair for awhile (after her shower I just use a detangling spray and comb it out), but it will get frizzy sometimes, and am thinking maybe it’s time to try something different?
3. About a year and a half ago, the eye doctor prescribed glasses for close-up reading and computer work, but it was almost a year before I ever used them. And now I feel like I’m living a “you know you’re in your 40’s” meme because I’m considering getting a second pair so that I can have an upstairs pair (reading before bed) and a downstairs pair (crossword puzzles, labels, etc.) 😜
4. I need some new summer shoes; flip-flops and casual sandals. Throw me your recommendations!
5. And speaking of summer, has anyone used this water-based tanner? It’s been more than a decade since I’ve used self-tanner, so I’m out of the loop, but I saw this on someone’s IG stories and was intrigued.
6. In the mood for a burger but don’t have the grill ready to go yet? Make these cast iron skillet cheeseburgers! (And don’t forget the burger sauce!)
7. Why do the pretty blooms on trees smell so funky? Walking through our neighborhood last weekend, it smelled like every house was cooking fish 🤣
8. Has anyone else forgotten how to style their hair during the pandemic? Or just me?
9. TV! We’re caught up on Harrow and started Yellowstone this week (watching it on the Peacock app)… we’re COMPLETELY hooked!
10. TGIF! Such a little queen bee ;-)
These flip flops are so comfortable! They come in lots of colors and even leather. They can be worn with anything. I bought mine at DSW and on Amazon.

I hardly wear cheater glasses. Only when the light is low. But I have 3 pair, one for every room I read and one for the car just in case.
And for the summer flip flops and sandals: I highly recommend Skechers. Best footwear I ever used. I bought a pair of Skechers golf shoes and went back for another pair, they are the best.
re: stinky trees! Most likely what your smelling are those invasive Bradford Pear trees. Pretty, but really invasive, to the point that naturalists and DNR suggests you cut those down and NEVER plant them again. They’re awful!
My favorite sandals are Rainbows. They have a lifetime warranty and are so comfortable.
Wait a few years and you will have a pair in every room
Re : Isabelle’s fine, curly hair
You could try Fairy Tales Curly-Q Shampoo
https://fairytaleshaircare.com/products/curly-q-kids-shampoo
I use it, the conditioner & their detangling spray on my 6 y.o. granddaughter’s very thick curly hair and it works wonders. I don’t feel comfortable using or recommending an anti-frizz hair product for a child, we go chemical-free as much as possible. Good luck!
Oh my goodness….is that a Family Circus book? They were one of my favorites. :) I used to use St. Tropez tanner, but switched to Jergen’s Natural Glow Instant Sun mousse. I saved about $20 a bottle and I love the color, but either of those are my go-tos. Happy Friday!!
Didn’t have curly hair until I was a teen but the most important thing I have learned is never brush it except when it has conditioner on it. The Curly Girl method is a good place to start. A good conditioner is key because curly hair tends to be dry.
OMG it’s too bad you don’t have citrus trees in your area! They’re blooming like crazy in AZ right now and the orange and lemon blossom scent wafting through the neighborhood is absolutely amazing!
I love Joseph’s comment, so adorable! My girls and I all wear Old Navy flip-flops – very affordable and so many colors. I have curly hair and love Shea Moisture products.
For sandals, I love my Birkenstocks. I’ve got hot pink and silver and they’re so comfortable. I have a pair for indoors only. Regarding reading glasses…before I got prescription glasses and now wear them all the time, I had a pair of readers in each room of the house almost! So many cute styles and multipacks are reasonably priced.
My daughter has curly hair (I do not) and she swears by Morracan Oil. Yes to “good” reading glasses for work and cheapo ones all over the house. I ordered some that filter blue light and it helps with eye strain. As far as flip flops, I ruined my feet with flat havianas, etc. I now wear Fit Flops almost exclusively. They are expensive but they last and they really help my plantar facitis. They even have mens’ version and I convinced my husband to wear them. Very comfortable! Kids and dog darling!!!!!
Omg…on “I’m just so happy every day…”. Total heart melt.
What a beautiful picture of Judith. She looks like a doggie model.
I suggest Isle of Paradise self tanning drops for a self tanner. Sephora carries it and they are having their spring savings event …..code OMGSPRING. thru the 19’th. I also have friends who like Fake Bake a lot but I have never tried it myself.
I love my Tidewater flip flops! They’re comfy, and my first pair have lasted me two summers so far.
I recommend checking out the curly girl method for your daughter. I use it for my hair and my daughters’. Using sulfate free shampoo a and silicone free conditioners helps keep the frizz down, as well as adding CG-friendly creams.
Yes if only we could bottle them, my babies are now having their own babies😊 My youngest girl who is 24 and is due in October, came by this morning as I was still asleep and crawled in bed with me, boy do I cherish those moments. My other is 28 and she is due next month. I miss those little girl days, but will soon have little girl grand babies. 😁
Enjoy these days, !
Check out Aveda for hair products. Very gentle and they have many products especially for curly hair. Pricey but worth it and have stores in most malls but they also ship for free.
I can relate to the reading glasses issue. I have a good pair for work since I’m at the computer and then I just get the multi pack at Costco. My brother is an ophthalmologist and that’s also his suggestion”just go to CVS”!
For #4 – you can’t go wrong with Havianas! So comfy and so many different colors to choose from.
Yellowstone is great.
I like Paul Mitchell, super skinny serum(silky) and super skinny relaxing balm.
I save that for the summer.
I love my Naot sandals.
Gave up on my cheap ones and just use these.
I love my Jambu sandals! I stumbled across a pair at REI several years ago and they have been my go-to summer shoes ever since. They’re cute enough to wear with anything and still look stylish. They’re also comfy, breezy, lightweight, and secure. Because they have a strap, my toes aren’t constantly gripping trying to keep them from falling off (like with flip-flops).
My favorite flip flops are from Olukai. They are crazy comfortable, supportive and last for years. I’m also a serious Birkenstock fan.
Happy Friday!
As a child, I had ( and still have) hair just like Isabelle’s. My parents liked it long, but sometimes it got big snarls. My mom’s solution was French braids back from the top and sides for a little control. Also Isabelle would be adorable with hair short enough to let those big curls go rampant.
Love your blog!
I’ve tried doing some braids but her hair is still so fine that I can’t really get it to stay in there.
I have always had fine thin hair. As a child, my grandmother would braid it. Hair had to be wet to start and when she was done she used hairspray. I’m sure by the end of the day all the little frizzys had escaped butat least for the first half I looked good! Also, any sort of moisture makes my hair frizzand not stop. I can always tell a rainy day before looking out the window bc my hair isless likely to even remotely behave.
For detangler buy rose hydrosol from Plant therapy .com
http://rwrd.io/eqyduzs
use as detangler and for a spritz on your face. Very refreshing. While you are there buy a lavendar hydrosol and spray that on the kids pillow at night for sleeping. Hydrosol is great for so many things and it’s kids safe. Mostly I use hydrosol on itchy bites in the summer.
Christie likes Noodle & Boo shampoo & conditioner. She buys it on Amazon!!!! Of course !!!!!! Lol 😂 The girls hair shines & smells sooooo good ! Hope that helps !!! Love the pictures you post ! The kids are growing so fast !!!
Somebody else somewhere else just mentioned about the fishy smell of the spring trees in bloom. Until then I had never heard that comment before and I have yet to experience it. However, the explanation given was that the Bradford pear trees smell fishy when in bloom. We have a ton of those in Pittsburgh. It’s weird how this year for the first time I have heard a couple of remarks about this. As beautiful as the pear trees are, it makes me glad that I have lilacs which perfume the air beautifully! :)
It is so weird! We’ve lived in this neighborhood for 6 years and it’s the first time we noticed that fish smell!
Same thing is happening in Southern IN!
Love Friday Things and seeing pictures of your little ones! I’m the mom of 3 sons, the baby is 31! Time speeds by, so yes, freeze those moments in your mind. And Yellowstone…..yes, so so good! Anxiously waiting for the next season coming this summer.
The trees that are the smelly culprit are probably Bradford Pears. We had them and they are drop dead gorgeous but they also reek 🤷♀️. Happy weekend!
Birkenstock Essentials Arizona Slide Sandal. $45 from Nordstrom. I keep a pair by the backdoor to slip on before going outside.
Summer Sandal recommendation–Birkenstock Essentials Arizona Slide Sandal. $45 from Nordstrom. These are waterproof and come in lots of fun colors. I keep a pair by my backdoor to slip on when I go outside.
When I got in my 40’s and started needing readers for everything my brother-in-law, who is an
ophthalmologist suggested mono vision. So I went to
just one contact in the eye which is best for close up. My other eye was for my distance. I wore just one
contact for years!
I’ve since had to go to two contacts,
but still one is for near and one is for distance.
It’s great cause you can read everything without looking for readers!
I do the same. I have always worn contacts and I never used reading classes when I turned 40, I just switched my contact lenses to one for close and one for far. I don’t have a big difference in my prescription between left and right eye, only .25 so this works very well for me, but I have know others that had a bigger difference in prescription between each eye and it did not work.
Charleston Shoe Company sandals are the best sandals I’ve ever owned…by far!
Hi Michelle,
I live in flip flops year round…yes, even in Nebraska! My 2 favorites are Born and Clark’s. The Clark’s are so well made and have lots of cushion, although they are a little flip floppy noisy. The Borns are flatter but have a floral design which is cute and goes all the way through the bed of the shoe. I’ve had these for years and they keep their color and design beautifully. They also have a gold button on top which adds to their charm. Hope you find a pair that you love.
100% agree with the Born and Clarks, and I would say Born over Clarks would be my choice every time.
I love my Clarks and wear them all the time for the cushioned support.
Corkys flip flops and sandals are super comfy and sylish!
Yes to having extra reading glasses! My family laughs at how many I have, but it makes such a difference. I keep one in the kitchen for when I need to read a recipe, then by each couch where I sit, Also have one in the bedroom, & one in my purse. You can get a set of 3 really cheap at Costco.
We love Yellowstone, it’s a great series.
Suave Purely 3 in 1 has a cream leave in/detangler. Controls and tames also..
