Friday Things
1. THIS FACE. He is just the sweetest kid – loves to give hugs and kisses and makes us laugh all day long. It sort of feels like he was born yesterday but that he’s always been here, too.
2. Exciting news! I think my husband and I finally picked a name for our new little guy! Like with Joseph, we’re keeping it a secret until he arrives. But whew! Picking names is no easy feat!
3. I’m looking for product recommendations for really fine hair… My hair is naturally curly but I usually blow it straight or wavy. It just looks so thin and limp and a little straggly. Are there any products you love if you have thin hair?!
4. In case you haven’t seen it, there is a recall on Gold Medal Flour for possible E.coli contamination. You can read about the products affected on General Mill’s website.
5. I have finished Konmari-ing my books! Woo! My final tally – keeping 98, discarding 87. That’s nearly half of everything I had and it feels SO good to say goodbye to everything I never used, never opened, and was just taking up space. Now I’m no to paper, which will not be an easy task – I have let my side of the office get WAY out of control, eek.
6. On that note, I found this handy little graphic on filing cabinet clean sweep – what needs to be kept and what you can safely discard. I can’t wait to start shredding!
7. Love, love, LOVING this kitchen reveal from I Wash, You Dry!
8. What are you watching on TV this summer? Netflix just released another season of Peaky Blinders, which I admittedly didn’t love the first time we watched, but I got totally hooked. Plus, the music in the episodes is killer!
9. I’m still in total disbelief that the Penguins are in the Stanley Cup Finals… I had butterflies watching the entire first game! I haven’t gone to a playoff game yet, but I have my name on tickets for Game 5 or 7 IF we need them! I want to see a Stanely Cup win in person!
10. TGIF! These are BFFs in the making, makes my heart smile :)
I have fine, curly hair myself and I love the products by EVOLVH. I would highly suggest at least trying their leave-in conditioner spray. It has made a world of difference for my hair!
For my fine hair, I drench it in coconut milk for about 30 minutes every few weeks and then wash. Leftover can be frozen until you’re ready for the next round. How much you need varies on how long your hair is. Mine is short, so one can will last me a while.
In light of the massive flour recall, I would highly recommend that you all sign up for FDA email alerts which address food and drug recalls (lately there have quite a few because of listeria problems). Also, another federal agency which will send you email alerts is the Consumer Product Safety Commission. I have seen a number of recalls from the CPSC involving baby carriers you wear with latches that would fail. Both are free services (you support them with your tax dollars) and I have been a subscriber for a number of years.
Thank you for the tip Jane!
Joseph is just too cute! Hope you get to go to a playoff game – that would be so much fun.
I have fine, straight hair. I have been using Purology volumizing shampoo and conditioner for awhile now with great results. It is spendy, but super concentrated so you don’t have to use a lot. Washing every other day also helps cut down the cost.
I love your blog! Thank you for all of your amazing recipes.
This isn’t a shampoo or hair product, but is really amazing for your hair and skin. I started taking collagen powder supplements, mixed in my Protien shakes, or yogurts, or even in tea or coffee, a scoop a day, and have noticed a huge difference in my hair growth, and strength. Also in my skin and eyelashes. I have always had long lashes, but now they are very thick and long. I really am thankful for finding this product and wanted to pass it along. I’ll include a link in my comment to the brand I use, but I’m sure there are other brands out there!! http://store.trimhealthymama.com/product-p/1085-962463853.htm
I have very fine hair. I love Bumble and Bumble Thickening Shampoo as well as Oribe Thick spray and Dry spray. They all make my hair look amazing.
That flour recall is sooooooo scary. How does e coli get in flour?
I got to touch the Stanley Cup twice. I went to school with the son of the general manager of the Red Wings. It was very cool.
Have a great weekend, Michelle!
I have fine hair and I try to use a light weight conditioner, but what I have found to help my hair the most is to wash my hair with Blue Dawn dish washing detergent once a week. This strips all the products out of your hair and doesn’t dry it out then condition and style as usual. I have much more volume when I do this.
First of all, I agree! Joseph has such a sweet face! He’s absolutely adorable. I know what you mean about it feeling like he was born yesterday, but has always been here. I feel the exact same way about my 14 month old little boy. :)
I also have fine hair, although mine is pretty straight. I have found that spraying it with Amika Un-done texture spray adds volume and body to my rather limp hair. Maybe it would help you, too!
I love your blog, especially because we have 3 Golden boys too! I use Bedhead Root boost (pink bottle) and Bumble and Bumble thickening spray (blue bottle)-both really help and a little mousse never hurt either!!
Rosemary eo, swertia japonica eo or extract, hope eo or extract. I massaged them neat directly on roots with no irritation, but you can use in a carrier oil like almond (excellent) or coconut oil. Massage with finger tips three times a week. Really MASSAGE with finger tips, it makes the difference. I normally have very thick curly/wavy hair and lost it post surgery/cemo. This has been a godsend. There is an ayurvwdic oil that I cannot remember that reversed my sprinkle of grey..seriously, was crazy. Fpr healthy growth this trifecta worked for me
Rosemary essential oil, Swertia Japonica eo or extract, hops eo or extract. the really do work to jump start healthy hair
I also have fine, but naturally curly/wavy hair. Here’s my routine:
– A volumizing shampoo & conditioner (I use John Frieda currently but switch it up)
– A heat protectant/detangler spray (I use this the Davines OI All in One Milk Spray. It’s pricy but lasts). Sometimes I’ll do a hair oil or texture spray instead depending on the weather/time of year.
– Mouse (tresemme)
– Blow dry with diffuser.
Everyone’s hair is different, but that’s what has seemed to work for me the best to keep my hair under control and looking much fuller. Good luck!
I buy my flour at Walmart. Brand is Wheat Montana Natural White Flour and is about $4.00 for a 10 lb. bag. Made in Montana, Non-GMO, 100% All Natural / No Preservatives / No Additives All Purpose White Flour / Unbleached / Unbromated
Kosher Certified / Easy resealable bag
I have been buying this for a few years and like the product, the price and that I actually know where the wheat comes from.
I am loving the living proof instant texture mist. I have naturally curly hair, and it gives it the right amount of “oomph”
Deva Curl is a very good product for fine hair. My hairstylist uses it on my hair and I love it!
Ovation Hair Therapy – check it out. I love your pictures. My golden looked just like Einstein and passed away on Mother’s Day. Every time I see a picture of him, it’s a little reminder of my Sasha girl, so Thanks!
Oh Paula, I’m SO sorry to hear about Sasha :( Hugs to you, xo
Check out the Alterna Caviar or volume products. They are great!
I used to have superfine hair and use to loose lots too until i cleaned up my food and my cosmetics and shampoo. Which in turn cleaned up my hormones and now my brush has almost no hair vs. way too much before. I use poofy shampoo https://www.poofyorganics.com/ and also http://www.josiahsoils.com/ i make sure everything i put on my body from Cosmetics to creams etc. has Point of 1 or 2 on ewg.org charts. Then i just cleaned up my food i am paleo. But i think you are pretty good since you have done whole30 so maybe try the ewg.org charts. My hair is so much thicker and just all around feel better than i am not putting crap on my skin and goes right into my body. Good Luck!
I have super fine hair so I feel your pain. I’ve had good luck with herbal essence volumizing shampoo and I recently discovered Neuma Renau Scalp Therapy. It’s a scalp exfoliant that you add to your shampoo once a week. Seriously saved my hair – it’s cleaner and has new life.
Where did you take your cookbooks that you were getting rid of? I’m scared to weed through mine, but they’re just taking up space there. I never open so many of them.
I was lucky enough to go to the Stanley Cup playoff games when we played the Red Wings. I was at the final game when we lost. Although it stunk for us, it really was great to see the presentation of the cup. Pittsburgh fans were still hanging around and being respectful. Hoping for a great outcome this year.
Hi Diane, I just finished sorting, I’m going to let my family take whatever they’d like when they’re all here on a Sunday and what’s left I’m going to donate to the local library.
I use Pantene shampoo & conditioner & saw on tv that their Volumizing Mousse was the best (and reasonably priced) for thin hair. I’ve used it for over a year now & it does make my hair fuller. My hair is pretty straight, though. I don’t know what it would do for curly hair. For $5 when it’s on sale, it’s worth a try.
I have super fine hair but a lot of it and I’ve found a couple things that help! I love OGX Biotin and Collagen or their Bamboo Fiber Full shampoo and conditioner. I use the Bamboo Fiber Full Thickening cream before I dry my hair. And after I use Not Your Mother’s Double Take Dry Finishing Texture spray and John Frieda Forever Full hairspray.
That first picture of Joseph is frame-worthy . . . at least the 16 x 20 size :) His gentleness is so evident in handing Einstein the ball – a boy and his dog – perfect companions <3
I wish I could help out on the hair. My problem is the opposite of yours; thick, wavy/curly and unruly. When I was little those natural curls were my burden. Since having 3 children, it has gone to the wavy side. But I'm always on the look out for something that will tame it, but usually end up just clipping it up to keep it off my face, particularly on days like we've had this week.
Oh those Penguins!! What a game on Wednesday night! My son was at the game and said it was so much fun! I can't imagine this will be a 4 game Cup run, so my bet is that you'll get to see it won here in Pgh at Game 5 :)) If that does happen, I'll be thinking of you down at the Consol.
I wish I could help you with your beautiful hair problem. I have very frizzy wavy hair that is a lot today handle. If someone recommends a good shampoo or conditioner that works for you please pass it along. Your little man is just too sweet to look at, OMG he’s so cute!! Congrats on your second pregnancy ??
Have a Wonderful weekend.
Congratulations on your pregnancy! Joseph, Einstein, & Duke’s crew is going to get bigger and more fun! I was wondering for the Gold Medal recall, what have you used instead? I’ve always used it and had to dump it all out when I heard of the possible contamination, and still haven’t restocked. Was going to go with King Arthur or Pillsbury…Thanks for your input and congrats again!
Hi Maxine, I use King Arthur Flour for all of my flours! Love them!
Bosley shampoo and conditioner has made my fine, wavy/curly hair more manageable and fuller-looking. I get it from Amazon.
