Friday Things #525

1. Isabelle finished kindergarten last Friday! The change and growth in her from the beginning of the year is just unbelievable; she started so shy and a little apprehensive and has become confident and a little social butterfly. She loves her friends, and has learned SO much. I’m amazed at how well she is reading, spelling, doing math, etc. Such a wonderful year for her!
2. The boys don’t finish up school until next week, so she’s loving having mommy and daddy to herself and is thoroughly enjoying her start to summer.
3. Last weekend, the kids went to the movie theater for the very first time! We took them to see a 40th anniversary special for Transformers since the boys have been really into it and Isabelle even likes watching sometimes. They LOVED the experience and can’t wait to go back; we had so much fun!
4. This past week, the kids were shooting basketball in the driveway and the hoop was set fairly high, the usual height for elementary basketball since Joseph wanted to practice with a hoop height that he played on. In the past, when Dominic would shoot at that height, the basketball would get nowhere even close to high enough. This time, he was not only getting the ball the whole way up but making shots. I’m amazed at how much stronger he has gotten over the last 9 months or so since he finished treatment 💪🏻

5. I’ve seen these solar buddies mentioned/recommended in multiple places over the last week. Has anyone used them? Would you recommend? I’m thinking of picking them up for getting sunscreen on the kids easily this summer, but would love to hear if any of you have them!
6. I can’t believe it’s already Memorial Day weekend! Do you have any grilling plans? One of the most popular desserts on the site for Memorial Day is always this red, white, and blue berry trifle ❤️🤍💙
7. I’ve been doing the bulk of my grocery shopping at Aldi for at least a year now (there combined with Costo make up probably 95% of my shopping, then I grab little incidentals that aren’t available at either place at another store), and loved browsing through these 35 Best Foods You Can Buy at Aldi. There’s a bunch I haven’t tried yet (though Honey Grahams is on the list, and my kids will FLY through a box of that)! Do you have any favorites? One of the house favorites here is the Mama Cozzi fresh pizza dough.
8. When Dominic was first diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago, a sweet reader who was part of a group that sent cards to people who could use cheering up, added Dominic to their list and he received cards from all over the world. It thrilled him and really lifted his spirits. A friend shared that there is a similar group based here in Pittsburgh called Kindness Cards; I’d love to do something like this to pay it forward.
9. Have you watched anything good lately? We just caught the two new episodes of Vera; such a great show!
10. TGIF! Summer vibes ☀️

Aldi die-hard here! Each month or so they have a couple unusual flavors of potato chips as one of their special buys. My kids have fun taste-testing them. We’ve had rib-eye steak, turkey & stuffing, dill pickles. They enjoy seeing what crazy flavor will come out next.
My brother also swears by Aldi, but it went to one while visiting a friend in Delaware and wasn’t impressed. I might have to try again. I also am a big BJ’s shopper, although we have a Costco across the street, I find it a little too big and overwhelming. And yes with both so close together, they seem to be doing fine over close to a decade now.
Also so glad to hear how will your son is doing, physically and mentally. Sending prayers.
Been praying for your son since I found your website. Yay to the newest basketball star!
Love your Friday things… I looked at Aldi as I’m in UK , some similar products but I wish we had peanut butter cups & Hawaiian rolls!!
So pleased your little boy is doing well, & your lovely family.
We watched maid on Netflix – really good & some interesting travel documentaries with Michael Palin – on 5 … don’t know if you can get them?
I’m stunned to read that you do such a large percentage of your grocery shopping at Aldi. Aldi was available at my local mall when I lived in Australia for 30 years but I only bought bits and pieces there. Aldi is not in Canada (yet) but I do miss the opportunity of seeing the weekly specials available there. Their dairy products were good. From the link you provided I can see that many of the products available to you are different to what was available in Australia probably due to local arrangements.
Have a lovely weekend.
My husband and I have been watching “MI-5” on BritBox and are loving it! We’re currently on season 6.
Yaaaay Isabel!!!!
Love hearing about your week with your family. Our children are grown but I remember the days you are going thru now and would do it all over again! So fun! We shop at Aldi regularly and we especially like Clancys Honey Wheat Pretzel Rods, the Bentons Animal Crackers (our dog loves them) and their block cheeses. Sooooo many good products that I prefer over the national brands. I definitely see the savings. (Sorry for the misspelled brand names – apostrophe key does not work)! lol
We bought the Solar Buddies sunscreen tool for my almost 1 year old baby and it works great. Makes it mush easier to rub in and apply evenly.
I have shopped at Aldi for decades starting when I lived in Germany. Been a huge fan from day one. Their Cinnamon Graham crackers are better than the plain. Makes wonderful pie crusts. And their fresh pizza dough is great. Currently on sale for $1.19 at my store. Cooks up so nicely and is way better than other brands. Unfortunately it does not freeze well so I only buy one package at a time. Learned that one the hard way!
Yes, I do the same each Friday as Teri mentioned below. It’s the first thing I read and it has been for several years…before the marriage and kiddos and during the time of Einstein. It is a real treat as you share all the ups and downs of your sweet family. We are all rooting for Dominic’s continued good health. I have shopped at Aldi a few times, but not consistently. Yes, your list of items from Aldi would be appreciated.
BTW, I have Vera on as I write. She’s fantastic. If you enjoy Brenda Blethyn, I suggest you watch the hilarious Undertaking Betty if you can find it.
Love this post! So much good news!! I shop at Aldi and in addition to the 35 items listed, we love the Simply Nature Sweet Potato chips and the Bakers Corner Chewy Fudge Brownies (I add 1/2 cup chocolate chips and 1/2 cup walnuts). The brownies are always a huge hit! Enjoy your summer.
Thank you for sharing your life! I enjoy watching your kids grow up. We are at the collage stage now and almost finished with that. The time you’re going through now is the best!!
I shop at Aldi weekly (do curbside pickup due to mobility issues) and occasionally get a few things from Walmart. My favorite current Aldi favorite is Specially Selected Artisan Cranberry Crisps. which I think are similar to Raincoast Crisps. They’re filled with cranberries & nuts. I smear them with some spreadable cheese & top with fruit preserves for a tasty treat.
Have a great holiday weekend!
Reading Friday Things is one of the first things I do on Fridays. I love hearing about your family, especially updates about Dominic and his wonderful recovery. Thanks for sharing your stories. 🥰
Since your opinions I trust, would love your personal Aldi list of things you buy and like.
I love that picture of Isabelle with the dogs, it just catches that summer feeling for me :) There is an Aldi about 15 miles from me, when I am in that shopping center, I have noticed people constantly going in and out, so it sure looks popular. It is in the same shopping center as the Costco, so that is convenient! I should go in there the next time I am at Costco and check it out.
Do you recommend any special meal items from Costco or Aldi? I see a lot of people posting on Instagram about foods from Costco but wondering what your thoughts are.
We plan to grill on Sunday, we are hoping the weather holds out, they are calling for showers each day, but Monday seems the most questionable. I am so happy to have a 3 day weekend! It’s so hard to believe we are at the start of summer already. It seems like I just took down the Christmas tree, where does the time go???
Happy Memorial Day!
Love all the great news and updates. I will have to frequent Aldis a little more often. I have always stopped by for their great price on Gruyere.
We’re going to make a barbecued brisket tomorrow, along with some baked beans and coleslaw. Have a great Memorial weekend everyone!
Would love a post with your favorite Aldi and Costco items!
Absolutely love all the good news today. Such a breath of fresh air.
