Friday Things #555

1. How was your first full week of January? Our kids were supposed to go back to school on Monday, but they got an extra day of Christmas break thanks to a snow day! They took full advantage, watching movies, playing outside, playing video games, and soaking up just a wee bit more fun. It’s always sad for all of us when break comes to an end, but they all had a good week back, and we’re finding our way back to our routines.
2. We started taking down the Christmas decorations on Monday, and finally had everything completely finished up yesterday. The house always looks so empty once everything is put away, but oh boy, I am ready to dig in and do some decluttering and deep cleaning. I think I’m going to tackle the kitchen next week; I’ve been feeling for awhile now that where I have certain things stored just doesn’t make sense and I want to do some rearranging. We’ve lived in this house for nearly 10 years (!!), and I’ve never reassessed the kitchen storage; it’s time!
3. If you also have the decluttering bug, I liked this article >> A Simple Trick for Decluttering: Look at Your Home Like a Stranger
4. I’m trying very hard this year to stick with the one line a day journal that I have… I’ve started and stopped multiple times over the years, but started fresh on January 1st. I love recording little snippets of our days to look back on.
5. If you’re looking for reading inspiration, I loved perusing this roundup >> The Most-Borrowed Books from Public Libraries in 2024
6. Well, I never had a white kitchen, so our warm-toned kitchen is now apparently back in style 😅
7. Love this great reminder >> “Your habits are often a byproduct of convenience. Humans are wired to seek the path of least resistance, which means the most convenient option is often the one that wins. Make good choices more convenient and bad choices less so. Behavior will improve naturally.”
8. Penn State vs Notre Dame last night! We’ve been loving the college football season… who were you rooting for?
9. What are you watching this week? We’re caught up on Landman and we also watched Protection, and are working our way through White Lies.
10. TGIF! This sweet boy was lying between the boys’ rooms, waiting for them to wake up 💙

Here in KC the schools were closed this entire week due to snow! When I taught school we never got more than one snow day in a row. Global warming? :-)
My Christmas tree with only lights on it is still up and I’m going to put it away like that this year, just haven’t gotten around to it. I miss the cheeriness of the Christmas decorations.
Thanks for the recommendation for White Lies. I’m getting onto it right away.
I personally love my creamy white kitchen and feel it brightens up the space. As my home is open plan kitchen dining living I don’t wanna add too much colour into the kitchen space. My backsplash is charcoal gray with an imprinted pattern on the tiles, which I just love.
If you’re going to tackle the kitchen, I’d recommend Kendra Adachi’s book The Lazy Genius Kitchen – super helpful! I always put up a couple winter decorations that make the house not look quite as empty but not cluttered – some little snowflake lights and candles…just to add some light and warmth! And finally – go bucks!!!
Go Bucks Indeed!! O-H
I love the article on decluttering! It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. I’m gonna try it. Thanks!
I really do enjoy the “Friday Things” posts. Love seeing pictures of the kids, and hearing what they’ve been up to. Thank you for sharing.
