Friday Things #591: A Bittersweet Update
Hello, friends! I hope you have been enjoying a wonderful summer; it seems impossible that it’s already winding down. Last week proved to be a very bittersweet one for our family; this Friday Things will include two big life updates, then we’ll be back to regularly scheduled programming next week. Thank you for being here.

First up, a Dominic update. Last Monday, we traveled to New York for scans after he completed three rounds of just immunotherapy (no chemo). As we were pulling into the parking garage, I received a call from the hospital that the radioactive tracer he needed to receive on Tuesday (in preparation for his scan on Wednesday) wasn’t going to arrive. They said he would still have his scheduled MRIs the next morning, and we would receive more information about rescheduling when we saw his team.
The next morning, he had his brain/head MRI and spine MRI, then we met with members of his team, whose plan was to move his scan to Friday and do a PET scan in the interim on Wednesday morning. We secured a separate hotel for Thursday night, and we were planning to extend our stay until late Friday.
Early Wednesday morning, he had the PET scan they had added, and then we spoke with his oncologist. He said the MRIs looked wonderful and that while the PET hadn’t been read by radiology yet, he had viewed it and said it looked great. As a result, he didn’t feel it was necessary for us to stay until the end of the week for the extra scan and encouraged us to head on home. The next morning, he called with the final PET results and said the scan looked fantastic; neither the PET nor MRIs detected anything active.
He would like Dominic to do three additional rounds of immunotherapy since he said he tolerates it really well and it has proven so effective for him. He said they could be spread out a little more and sees it as pseudo-maintenance. Once those three rounds are finished, he will have a larger workup to move him into actual maintenance. It was wonderful news, and while Dominic (and all of us, really) was hopeful that he was done with inpatient hospital stays, we couldn’t be happier with the results of the scans. We keep pushing forward thanks to the enormous support and prayers we continue to receive ❤️
And now, the bitter part of our week…

A couple of days before we left, Duke didn’t seem to be doing great; he wasn’t eating well and wasn’t as mobile as he had been. While we were away, he seemed worse, and my husband took him to the vet. They spent three hours with him, and the bloodwork they did came back with some concerning results (he had last had routine bloodwork done in the spring, and the results were perfect). They wanted him to get an abdominal ultrasound and referred us somewhere for Friday morning. By then, he wasn’t getting up on his own, he was having accidents, he wasn’t eating, and he was panting a lot.
The results of the ultrasound were devastating… they found a very large mass in his liver, three large masses in his spleen (that the doctor was surprised hadn’t burst yet), and diseased lymph nodes throughout his abdomen. He was clearly in significant pain, his breathing wasn’t right, and they didn’t believe he had much time, so we made the gut-wrenching decision to say goodbye.
It’s been almost 10 years since we said goodbye to Einstein, and this was just as heartbreaking. We brought Duke home as a puppy a week after we got married in 2013, and my gosh, he has just been here for absolutely everything. The kids have never known life without him. I know we have been incredibly blessed to have enjoyed 13 years with him, but that did not make the goodbye any easier. He was such a fantastic dog, so gentle and loving. He howled when the kids cried and was just so excited when everyone came home, and we were all together. It has seemed so quiet and a bit empty in our house over the last week.
He and Judith had the sweetest relationship, and she has definitely seemed down this last week. I realized that it has been nearly 8.5 years since we brought Judith to live with us, and they bonded immediately. From the first few days together, they were always sleeping in the evenings with some part of their bodies touching. This picture was taken just a week before Duke passed away 💔

Thank you for always enjoying pictures and updates of our pups and asking about them, going back 19 years now when I first got Einstein! It makes my heart so happy and makes walking these dreadful days just a bit easier knowing so many of you love them, too ❤️

Exciting news about Dominic! Congratulations! Prayers for future scans. 🙏🏼
So sorry to hear about Duke, I was crying reading this. The hardest part is letting them go. They live here for such a short time but bring all of us so much joy. I had to let my two, Freddie and Angel, go this past year. It’s not an easy thing to do. 💔🐾🪽
Sending prayers for the family! 🙏🏼
Happy Friday Michelle
I am so happy to hear that Dominick is doing well and all his scans came back clean! May he continue to do well and stay healthy!
My heart is broken for your and your family over the loss of Duke. It’s never easy to say goodbye, but I feel like it’s the last selfless gift we can give out pets and allow them to pass peacefully.
Rest now sweet beautiful boy xxoo
Wonderful news for Dominic ❤️
So very sorry for the loss of sweet Duke.
God’s blessings to Dominic and your family 🙏
🙏🙏🙏💔
I’m so sorry – words can’t ease the heartache of saying goodbye to a beloved furry family member. They are such a pure, joyful presence in our lives, and their love is so unconditional and uncomplicated, that their absence hurts all the more. I know that pain all too well and I’m so sorry you and your family are hurting – it is a bittersweet epitaph to how very much Duke was loved.
“Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love – it’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All of that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.” ~ Jamie Anderson
So glad to hear Dominic’s treatment is going well!!
I am so very sorry to hear about Dukes passing. I am one that was there not from the beginning but when you still had Einstein. Our pets are family. No doubt. Wishing you and your family, human and furry, lots of loving memories to hold.
Thank you for keeping us updated about Dominic’s progress, so many of us are praying for him!!! And so sorry to hear about your beloved Duke. You gave him a wonderful life, and I know you all miss him so much 😢.
Well I’ve had one heck of a good cry. I will miss his updates. As for Dominic this is great news. He’s a beautiful boy. I can only assume the other two are doing great. A sad and glad update. May God bless you all.
Glad to hear that Dominic is coming along well. Continue to trust God for complete healing in Jesus name.
Sorry to hear about the dog.
Praising God for Dominic’s progress. So sorry to hear about Duke. Blessings on your family.
I’m so happy for your family that Dominic is progressing well. I was holding my breath reading your post. I have thought of you and continue to pray for sweet Dominic.
Very sad to hear about Duke’s passing. Dogs can hide whatever pain they may be in. We had a similar experience last January with our Labrador. And it’s very hard when the kids have grown up with him. Our kids, and me and my husband still use our Lab.
Appreciate your updates.
So sorry for the loss of your sweet pup. I am so glad to hear of the positive news about Domonic though.
Michelle, I’m so thankful Dominic is doing well. I’m so very sorry to hear about Duke. I remember when Einstein passed like it was yesterday. I know how painful it is to lose our four-legged babies. Holding your family in my prayers.🌈🙏
There are no words, I have walked that path and the pain and emptiness is terrible. My 😢😢😢😢🐾🐾🐾🐾 thoughts and prayers are with all of you including Judith
Praises for Dominic and his battle today also
Bittersweet is correct much love sent
Michelle, the news about Dominic is wonderful. I am so happy for your family. God is good!
On the other hand, hearing about your sweet Duke brought tears to my eyes. I lost my Beau after 14 years. I had to have him put to sleep this past September; he had liver cancer. My heart still hurts. Prayers for you all during this difficult time. They are definitely a part of our family!
Praising God for Dominic’s excellent report, so glad he is tolerating the immunotherapy
so well. Praying for ongoing good health and the Lord’s Touch.
Precious pictures of the dogs nestled together, praying the Lord eases the emptiness in your hearts, home and family, so hard to lose pets that are family members, so many memories to treasure.
I am so happy to hear Dominic’s great news. I am so sad to hear about Duke.🌈 I will keep your family in my prayers. 🙏 Sending love and hugs to your family.
I’m so glad to hear Dominic is doing well. He is a brave little guy. I keep hoping that one day you will let us know that he is completely well.
So sorry to hear about Duke. You got him and I got my yellow lab about the same time, they have grew up together in a sense. Duke was the cutest puppy and seemed to be a great family member. I know your family will miss him terribly.
Sending hugs and prayers to you and your family
Im so sorry Michelle. Bittersweet for sure. Such great news for Dominic. May God comfort all of you
First, I will celebrate Dominic’s great scans with you! That is such amazing news and I am so thrilled for all of you! I can only imagine the sense of relief that brings!
I am so deeply sorry for the loss of your beautiful Duke. It is such an awful pain, especially when your kids have grown up with him. The quiet is awful and the pain is so palpable. Watching your kids go through it is so hard too. We had to say goodbye to our Lily at 12.5 due to heart failure when my son was 7. He’d known her his whole life. It was such a hard time. I will say that she is still very much a part of our lives and we use our Lily voice and have many inside jokes and nicknames. This past Christmas I bought one of those stuffed animals that are designed to look like your pet for my son and it was the best!
While things are so incredibly hard know, now that eventually they will start to get a little bit easier and you’ll find ways to keep Duke with you. My Lily loved to share my banana when I’d make oatmeal, and sometimes I swear she’s there in the kitchen with me.
Sending so much love to you and your family. To risk being cliche, it’s okay to not be okay. ❤️
Hi Michelle and family so happy for Dominic’s news! Just wonderful. So sorry to hear about Duke now he is your Guardian puppy with Einstein on the rainbow bridge looking down on your family and smiling and looking out for you all.
Oh my. What a roller coaster week. I am so happy for Dominic and all of you. That is such good news after the extra wait. Many prayers for continued success in his treatment.
But my heart is breaking about Duke. They are more than pets. They are family. And he has been with you for so long and through so many of life’s events. I hope your special memories help you through this difficult time.
God bless you all. God bless Dominic. And RIP Duke.
Life brings such happiness and such Gut wrenching pain. As I read about the testing in New York, I was holding my breath and your dogs have reminded me of my own golden who passed away and still a painful memory.
Hug your children and pets today!
Bittersweet is right. Happiness for the good news about how Dominic is doing. That is a wonderful update. Yet along with that I feel your sorrow over Duke. Such a good boy! It’s so hard to lose these babies. Keeping your sweet family in my prayers.
