Friday Things #591: A Bittersweet Update
Hello, friends! I hope you have been enjoying a wonderful summer; it seems impossible that it’s already winding down. Last week proved to be a very bittersweet one for our family; this Friday Things will include two big life updates, then we’ll be back to regularly scheduled programming next week. Thank you for being here.

First up, a Dominic update. Last Monday, we traveled to New York for scans after he completed three rounds of just immunotherapy (no chemo). As we were pulling into the parking garage, I received a call from the hospital that the radioactive tracer he needed to receive on Tuesday (in preparation for his scan on Wednesday) wasn’t going to arrive. They said he would still have his scheduled MRIs the next morning, and we would receive more information about rescheduling when we saw his team.
The next morning, he had his brain/head MRI and spine MRI, then we met with members of his team, whose plan was to move his scan to Friday and do a PET scan in the interim on Wednesday morning. We secured a separate hotel for Thursday night, and we were planning to extend our stay until late Friday.
Early Wednesday morning, he had the PET scan they had added, and then we spoke with his oncologist. He said the MRIs looked wonderful and that while the PET hadn’t been read by radiology yet, he had viewed it and said it looked great. As a result, he didn’t feel it was necessary for us to stay until the end of the week for the extra scan and encouraged us to head on home. The next morning, he called with the final PET results and said the scan looked fantastic; neither the PET nor MRIs detected anything active.
He would like Dominic to do three additional rounds of immunotherapy since he said he tolerates it really well and it has proven so effective for him. He said they could be spread out a little more and sees it as pseudo-maintenance. Once those three rounds are finished, he will have a larger workup to move him into actual maintenance. It was wonderful news, and while Dominic (and all of us, really) was hopeful that he was done with inpatient hospital stays, we couldn’t be happier with the results of the scans. We keep pushing forward thanks to the enormous support and prayers we continue to receive ❤️
And now, the bitter part of our week…

A couple of days before we left, Duke didn’t seem to be doing great; he wasn’t eating well and wasn’t as mobile as he had been. While we were away, he seemed worse, and my husband took him to the vet. They spent three hours with him, and the bloodwork they did came back with some concerning results (he had last had routine bloodwork done in the spring, and the results were perfect). They wanted him to get an abdominal ultrasound and referred us somewhere for Friday morning. By then, he wasn’t getting up on his own, he was having accidents, he wasn’t eating, and he was panting a lot.
The results of the ultrasound were devastating… they found a very large mass in his liver, three large masses in his spleen (that the doctor was surprised hadn’t burst yet), and diseased lymph nodes throughout his abdomen. He was clearly in significant pain, his breathing wasn’t right, and they didn’t believe he had much time, so we made the gut-wrenching decision to say goodbye.
It’s been almost 10 years since we said goodbye to Einstein, and this was just as heartbreaking. We brought Duke home as a puppy a week after we got married in 2013, and my gosh, he has just been here for absolutely everything. The kids have never known life without him. I know we have been incredibly blessed to have enjoyed 13 years with him, but that did not make the goodbye any easier. He was such a fantastic dog, so gentle and loving. He howled when the kids cried and was just so excited when everyone came home, and we were all together. It has seemed so quiet and a bit empty in our house over the last week.
He and Judith had the sweetest relationship, and she has definitely seemed down this last week. I realized that it has been nearly 8.5 years since we brought Judith to live with us, and they bonded immediately. From the first few days together, they were always sleeping in the evenings with some part of their bodies touching. This picture was taken just a week before Duke passed away 💔

Thank you for always enjoying pictures and updates of our pups and asking about them, going back 19 years now when I first got Einstein! It makes my heart so happy and makes walking these dreadful days just a bit easier knowing so many of you love them, too ❤️

So happy to hear of Dominic’s good news!
My heart ached and tears flowed as I read of Duke’s passing. Such a sweet beautiful golden. May he be at peace and rest comfortably.
Interesting story from an ER nurse whose husband had stage 4 cancer.
She brought the family dog (who recently had a perfect checkup) to the hospital to help cheer up her husband. Husband recovers and dog dies shortly after with cancer all over its body.
Rest in piece Duke. Have a great year ahead Dominic!
I’m thrilled to hear the wonderful news about Dominic! I’ll continue praying for him. I cannot tell you how sorry I am about your sweet Duke. The picture of he and Judith is absolutely precious. Prayers for your family.🙏
Sincere Love and Blessing to you all.
I went through the same with my dog Bella.
From Canada.
Dominic! Dominic!
God bless you and your strength. Am over the moon happy with your latest good news!!
Duke! What can be said. Dogs and their unconditional love. He was a sweetheart❤️
I am so happy and sad at the same time! Great news about Dominic! What a blessing for him and your family. But, feeling very sad for you about Duke. He looked like such a sweet dog. We are definitely a dog family and have lost several furry family members over the years so I know the pain you are feeling. I will keep you and your family in my prayers as you grieve the loss of Duke.
I am so happy about the news on Dominic but feel so bad about Duke. Dogs are the absolute best and gifts from God! I always look forward to the pictures of your dogs. Praying for you all as you go through this loss.
Praying for your family. For a healing. ❤️😊 I’ve wondered if you’ve run across recipes for black walnut cake? My grandma died with her recipe. I’d like to see/use a good one. ❤️🙏🙏
It’s always great to hear good news about Dominic. May he continue on his path to wellness.
I’m sorry about the loss of Duke. I lost my dog just a few months ago – I know how difficult it is for your family.
Wishing your family peace and I’m so sorry for your loss.
Michelle, I am so sad about your dog. I am not a dog person, but your dogs are beautiful and so cute the way they would lie together. On the flip side, as life is, I am thrilled that Dominic’s scans looked great and hopefully will continue being clean. Enjoy the rest of your summer and getting ready for ‘back to school’.
I am so happy regarding Dominic. Prayers are being answered. However, I am so sorry about Duke. It is never easy losing our four legged family members. Please accept my condolences.
God is kind of funny at times like this. He gives and He takes away. Thrilled with the news for Dominic. It is amazing the strides that have been made in treatments.
Blessings to you and your family. Celebrate the good news and remember the warm memories fondly of Duke.

I am weeping…tears of happiness for the fantastic news about Dominic and such sad tears for the loss of Duke.
I remember the picture you posted the day you got him. He was so fortunate to be adopted into the wonderful life he had with your family.
Duke can now be Dominic’s special furry guardian angel…watching over him as he grows up healthy and well.
I wish you and your family every blessing and much peace .
Sharing the same love for golden retrievers, I am so sorry for your loss. I remember that pain as we have lost three of our own. They truly are half human, if that is even possible. May the pictures and memories last forever. And GREAT news about Dominic! Thank you for sharing such a personal and bittersweet post.
What a range of emotions. As I was reading the wonderful news about Dominic, I knew not so good news was coming. I’m so sorry about Duke. I hope Judith is doing ok. I know she misses him too. Sending hugs.
So glad about Dominic and so sorry about Duke. 🩷
It’s really good news about Dominic! You have all been through so much and risen to every challenge with strength and love. I’m so sorry about Duke, as a golden family with three kids who grew up with the best breed, I know your grief. What a gift to have Duke for thirteen years. I loved reading about all of your wonderful family.
lovely to read of Dominic’s progress – we keep praying – losing our dogs is heart breaking but worth the joy they bring –
Wonderful news for Dominic and your family.
Super sad news about Duke. It is so hard when we lose one of our furkids. They add so much to our lives.
Hugs to you and your family.
I am so very happy to hear the good news about Dominic! I will continue to pray for him and your family. I am also heartbroken to hear of the loss of your precious pup, Duke. I know how devastating it is to lose a furry family member. Please give Judith extra love while she is grieving. Hoping all your kids have a great upcoming school year! Thank you for sharing the great news on Dominic and as always, keeping you all in my prayers!
Thank God Dominic is doing well so sorry for the lost Einstein will continue to pray for you and your family
God bless
Soooooo happy about Dominic! Keep on doing what you do little man, you’ve got this!! Prayers do work.
But the news about Duke….hit my heart. We’ve had 2 Goldens and we lost the last one about 8 years ago and it was sudden just like Duke. Brought her to the emergency vet and didn’t come home with her. Because of that, my husband and I still can’t get another dog. It wrecked me. Wishing you all the best during this heartbreaking time.
I look every Friday for your updates, thank you for posting today!
My heart goes out to your family.
Happy to hear the good news about Dominic…
So sad to hear about Duke,😥
Continued prayers for Dominic 🙏🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Wonderful news about Dominic, I will pray for him always. My heart is so sad with the passing of Duke, it feels as though I’ve lost one of my own animal family. I believe he is running, young and free, with some wonderful pets up there 😇❤️
So happy to hear the fabulous news concerning Dominic’s health! Beyond sad to hear about Duke. May his memory be a blessing.
Deepest condolences on the loss of Duke. Pets are our family, too, and it’s very hard when they pass on. Such good news on Dominic! Bittersweet sure was a good word for this post. So true and such is life. Sending good thoughts as you move forward.
First of all, wonderful news about your sweet Dominic. I can only imagine how much happiness that brings all of you getting such positive news. Prayers for continued positivity and health!
As for your precious Duke, no words can make the sadness and emptiness any better. I am so very sorry for your loss of your furry boy. We just lost our precious pug, Lola, after 14 1/2 years last week so I certainly feel your pain.
Prayers for you and your sweet family and for Judith (because we know dogs grieve too) as you navigate these weeks and months ahead without him. :(
I am thrilled to hear the good news about Dominick! He is always in my prayers!
It’s so painful to lose a beloved pet but Duke was lucky to have a such a loving family. May you find comfort in all the happy memories of him.
Happy/Sad tears are a thing. My heart is with you for your great news about Dominic and it is breaking for your sweet Duke.

Praying for you all, especially Dominic
and Judith. Healing and comfort 🙏❤️💕
So, so happy to hear of Dominic’s improvement, God is answering our prayers for him, but sad to hear about Duke. Poor Judith has lost her best friend and your family will surely feel the loss for quite some time. Blessings to all!
