Friday Things
1. One of my husband’s oldest friends owns an exotic car dealership, and had said the boys were welcome to come by anytime to check out the cars. They finally took him up on his offer this week and oh my, Joseph was in his glory. He got to sit in a Lamborghini, a Ferrari, Porsche, and I don’t even know what else. My husband said Dominic was a little more hesitant to get in the cars, but had a blast regardless.
2. Oh hi, my baby looks like a five-year old all of a sudden, ahhhhhhh!
3. Have you heard of hair plopping? It’s for curly hair and it’s basically wrapping up wet hair in a t-shirt or microfiber towel for 10 to 20 minutes, then diffusing or letting it air dry (or you could let it dry totally wrapped up). Supposedly it keeps the curls amped up, defined, and from frizzing out. I’m dying to try it because I washed my hair this week and didn’t feel like drying it, so I just put a little product in and let it air dry, and the curls the next day were amazing!! I might be doing this a lot over the summer.
4. Alright, in addition to hair I have a few clothes/fashion/style things I want to discuss! First, where are you with the whole partial tuck trend? I have not done it yet because I don’t think I’ve tucked in a shirt since middle school? I think that was when it was cool to tuck the front of your shirt and let the back hang out. I just can’t decide how I feel about the partial tuck.
5. Okay, next… I started reading about dressing for your “season”, i.e. winter, summer, spring, fall. Have you heard anything about this? It makes SO MUCH SENSE, OMG. It’s based on your hair color, eye color, and skin tone, and now I know why I’m always drawn to black/grey/bright pink and have always hated how orange or coral colors look on me. Google it and let me know what you think! I also love that it gives me a little guidance to know what to look for when I want to add new pieces to my wardrobe.
6. Finally… are Keds back? I feel like I wore these throughout my entire elementary school years. They remind me of 5th and 6th grade cheerleading, ha. But I see them everywhere! I think they’re kind of cute and would be a great basic white sneaker to have, but… I hesitate lol.
7. I couldn’t believe it when I heard a few years ago that schools weren’t teaching cursive anymore. My husband and I were at the UPS store a year ago signing something when the clerk told us some older teenagers were coming in not knowing how to sign their name, like, an actual signature. I’m totally old-school, so I was thrilled to hear it’s coming back in at least some places!
8. Amazing sleep exercise used to help WWII fighter pilots fall asleep quickly. I basically fall asleep in 3 seconds no matter what every single night (hello, little kids), but it totally made me aware that sometimes I’m actually squinting when my eyes are closed and to relax those muscles. Very interesting!
9. Does anyone have this cookbook >> Cook Once, Eat All Week ?? It has tremendous reviews on Amazon and I’m thinking of giving it a try.
10. TGIF! I hope you have a fantastic weekend!
Having your colors done to find out if you are a Winter, Summer, Spring, Fall was a HUGE thing when I was a kid! I remember my Mom talking about it with her friends! lol I always wondered what my colors were! ;)
Every time you mention your boys and cars I think of this: https://www.childrensmuseum.org/exhibits/racing
I just finished my first week of meal prep. And Cassie is a freaking genius. The concept is unlike any cookbook I’ve ever tried and everything looks delicious and healthy. I follow her on insta mostly for her dog gusgus. But she is truly a beautiful person and the cookbook is a great resource!
My mom used to be a Beauty for All Seasons consultant when I was in high school in the late ’80’s, lol. She would practice on all my friends to find if they were a winter, summer, etc. It really does help you find what colors work for you. It helped my sales when I worked at a boutique because I knew what to select for the customers.
As for cursive, I teach third grade and I always teach cursive. The students love it and they always ask me at the beginning of the year if they are going to learn cursive. It’s an end of the day activity and they relax and listen to music as they practice. Sometimes they get to practice writing in shaving cream, whiteboards, glitter glue, chalk on the playground…it’s all fun and they feel like “big” kids.
I’ve got Cook Once Eat All Week and am trying week one this week. My friend has done 3 weeks so far and says it’s a HUGE game changer!
I’m a SUMMER!!! had my colors done some years ago, and I wear blue, purple, pink, …..
Find someone to do your colors…. I have light hair, fair skin, blue eyes, …. never do I wear black to my face… Winters are the same but stronger, and red, and black too… neither can do orange or yellow.
Check out Spring, and Fall….
P
P.s love the doggie smile. You can so see the love on his/her face. I cant always tell if it’s Duke or judith. But beautiful either pup😊
No to the partial tuck…unless you are Jennifer Aniston I dont think it is flattering. It is unbelievable to me that schools are not teaching cursive. How can they read things like the Declaration of Independence or other historical documents. They wont be able to read or write a beautiful love letter….it is all so sad.
You made me feel real nostalgic with the mention of dressing by using the seasonal method. It was very popular in the late 70’s, early 80’s. My good friend was a consultant. And I still have my copy of the book. I’m a winter and have followed these color rules all my life, jewel tones, bright pink, turquoise, gray. And I just read where cursive is back in school. Good move!
I haven’t heard of the hair thing. I have wavy hair and each side flips a different way so I have to use my hair straightener every time I wash my hair.
Not a huge fan of the 1/2 tucked look.
I’ve seen a come back of keds too. I had a few pairs growing up. I don’t find them very supportive now. Maybe I’m just getting old, lol.
I’ve heard of lots of schools dropping cursive from the curriculum. I think they should teach it. It’s good for kids’ cognitive and visual skills as well as fine motor skills. My kids still learn in it school. We’re in Ontario and they go to an independent school.
I’ve also heard that some schools are no longer teaching spelling because kids can just use spell check!
I love the partial tuck and have been doing it for years!! Funny about cursive, I didn’t know some places ever dropped it, my daughter in 3rd grade learned it this year, but we are in CA. Curious about dressing for your season, can’t wait to google it.
I never had my colors “done”, but read the book and figured out that I’m a summer. When I was young I loved peach and after figuring out I’m a summer I came to realize why peach never looked good on me! Pink, yes. Peach, no. I do look better in the colors in the summer group. My husband, I figured out, is an autumn – and he really does look better in those fall colors. Don’t get me started on cursive. I used to be an aide in an elementary school. The last year I was there, the only thing the kids were learning (in cursive) was how to write their own name (in 2nd grade). After that, I was the secretary in a middle school/high school charter school. I once wrote a note for a student (from a phone call with her mom) and when I took the note to the student she gave it back to me and told me she couldn’t read it as she can’t read cursive. Even the printing students do, though, is abysmal, in many cases. Sloppy, poor letter formation, can’t read it – just often a mess. I was a tough correcter – if I can’t read it, it’s wrong. And I marked a lot of things wrong for that very reason . Granted, I’m old but I never understood the partial tuck thing. It always looks messy to me.
I just started to try out the hair “plopping” method this week. It definitely has helped to clump my curls better! Still struggling with frizz though, so trying the curly girl method to see if I can finally tame my naturally curly hair!
Being a bit of a car freak myself, I love seeing your boys into them so young!!! And they have excellent taste!!!
Dressing for your “season” was super popular about 30 years ago…I think there were seminars on it…and most definitely consultants! I have to say I feel like I know what looks good on me when I put it on so I never participated in the trend.
I have been rocking the partial tuck for years…since the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy debuted :) I feel like it actually helps camouflage my generous midsection :P
The only time my hair gets blow dried is at my hairdresser appointments 3x a year. I am all about washing it, towel dry, apply leave-in conditioner, scrunch and go!
BTW, making your pavlova recipe for the first time to take to a dinner party this weekend. Fresh berries are so amazing right now. I can’t wait!!!
The school that I work at (3rd-5th, Oklahoma) still teaches cursive and one teacher’s class in particular always has beautiful handwriting!
I wear the Keds Anchor style. That bottom rubber part is a little bit thicker than the original Keds (about an inch or so total compared to maybe a 1/2 inch). I love them. I wear white but they come in the cutest pink, a couple blues…. so cute!!! I also wear them with a shirt partially tucked. LOL. I wouldn’t do it with an extreme high/low shirt, but with a T-shirt I think it looks cute. The no cursive is just the worst. It just makes no sense to me. How is a signature not important?? Being on the tail end of public school with my child, I would strongly recommend you send your kiddos to private school for sooo many reasons. I am guessing they still incorporate cursive into their curriculum. Happy Mother’s Day!
Lol.. I wanted to reply to all of your things!
#4 – the French tuck.. try it :D it’s cute with the right shirt and jeans/shorts. #5 – I remember my grandma talking to everyone who would listen about what season they were and what colors they should/should not be wearing. So neat! #6 – keds are super cute.. but Roxy has some ridiculously cute and comfortable shoes.. they’ve got this squishy layer that feels like a dream. most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned! #9 – Cook Once Eat All Week = the best! I’ve made one of the weeks so far, and it was such a game changer. Bonus – the author is the kindest most lovely person ever.
Happy weekend :-)
Have not heard of hair plopping but I put product in, scrunch it and let it air dry. Sometime I diffuse it. When it was long, my hairdresser used to push sections up and clip them with alligator type clip.s. That holds the curl without the length dragging it out. I will have to try plopping! Partial tucking seems silly to me. The seasons” colour thing was big in the 70s. I learned a lot from it. I wore a lot of the wrong colours (brown) till I learned about this method. Can’t believe cursive was not being taught!
Colour Me Beautiful – the book – came out in the mid 1980s and the consultations were very popular. I had one – I think mine was *complimentary* as I worked for a magazine at the time and probably wrote a story on it. It is only a few years ago that I donated the book, and also I had the pouch of fabric samples (in my colours) for many years – they have also left the building. Many of the people (women) I knew who *had their colours done* were very pleased with the results they had. I forget what my season is but it certainly assists in selecting clothing – and how just one different tone in a colour makes a difference. I looked up some information also – from 2015 https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2015/apr/08/colour-analysis-fashion-colour-me-beautiful-35-years and from the UK CMB site https://www.colourmebeautiful.co.uk/blog/get-colours-done It is primarily for clothing, but also assists in cosmetics colours.
#5. The publication “Color me beautiful” is available on Amazon. It was a gift to me”looong” ago and is very helpful to decide what you think looks best on you.
#3. I have wavy/curly hair and have started washing my hair at night and letting it air dry (or just going to bed with wet hair) and in the morning the waves are soft. If I let it air dry during the day, they’re frizzy. I also spritz Infusium 23 Leave In Treatment and run my fingers through my hair in the morning to get rid of the bed head and let it go.
#4. Hubby hates that half tucked look! And the last thing I need is to accentuate my belly by having my shirt tucked in so it hangs over. haha
#5. I still have a book from the 80’s called Color Me Beautiful, which addresses the whole thing about dressing according to your season. I’m a Fall! Not a big fan of Fall colors, though.
#7. When my kid got his drivers license, he had no idea how to “sign” his name!! I was SHOCKED, and a little disgusted. I made him practice!!
While I’ve never heard of “hair plopping,” when my hair was really curly I would always let it dry about 80% in a towel wrapped on my head. Then I’d put in some product (devaCurl worked best for me) and use a big fingertip diffuser to dry it the rest of the way.
I think the partial tuck looks good on most people, but I’ve always been too self conscious about not having a flat stomach, so I’ve never tucked…I don’t think ever.
Dressing for your “season” was super popular back in the 80s…my mom had a book all about it called “Color Me Beautiful” by Carole Jackson. I have always been a warm Autumn season.
As a former third grade teacher, I think it’s abhorrent that cursive writing isn’t taught in most schools. Cursive writing utilizes both sides of the brain at the same time, something printing and keyboarding doesn’t do. Not only will kids not be able to create a unique and safe signature, they won’t be able to read original documents from history, write a check properly, or read correspondence, like love letters or recipes, from family members. I plan to teach my son cursive even if his school doesn’t.
Dominic in those sunglasses! Adorable (and Joseph and Isabel, too)
My grandchildren are learning cursive in school, but they go to a Catholic school and I just think that their teaching has always been a little more traditional? I didn’t realize they had stopped teaching it but why????? Why would they do that? It seems silly to me but so much has changed sometimes I don’t even bother to ask why anymore. I am so happy my children and I grew up in better times, I don’t know what the world will be like for my grandchildren but I pray the world is a safe place for them.
I wish I had curly hair! My hair is thick but my hair shafts are thin and it is poker straight so if I curl my hair it looks great when it isn’t humid, but the moment I get any humidity in my hair, it looses all body and goes totally limp and looks horrible. I have been thinking what style I could get to go with my hair or, see if I could get a body wave? I have been given a good stylists name and have run into 2 others women that have used him and love him, so I am going to make an apt. and see what he thinks. Now that I am older, I want a cute style that doesn’t look old but that is still chic and looks good on me. There is a perfume commercial for Joy by Dior, Jennifer Lawrence is in the commerical, not sure if you’ve seen it but I love her hair style! It’s basically a short blunt cut with a wave. I love that commerical by the way, it’s just done so well, I love the view of the city they show from the roof top pool!
“Color Draping” was a thing about 35 years ago. A consultant would meet with you and determine what season you were based on your hair color and skin tone. I think the goal was to sell hair care and beauty products and/or clothing and jewelry but it was an interesting process and I still keep it in the back of my mind when I’m buying make-up or clothes. I’m a winter, by the way!
I remember in the 70’s when women would have parties to help you find out what “season” you were. I’m Winter & definitely look better in jewel colors – hot pink, aqua – though I rarely buy clothes those colors.
I too would like to hear comments on the partial tuck thing. I’m not crazy about it – it looks sloppy to me. What do others think?
In the 80’s Carol Jackson wrote a book called Color Me Beautiful. It took your skin color, eye color, hair color, and gave a season color pattern to follow. I follow this today! First it just makes sense and secondly it saves me a lot of money. I know exactly what colors to purchase and I feel beautiful in the colors that I love. I also dress my family with this in mind. I have a son who is a winter and a son who is a summer. Although the book is out of print it can still be purchased at abdbooks.
The school district in my part of Maryland had the kids learn cursive in elementary school,, but, didn’t emphasize it after that one year, which I think is awful.
Hope you have a great weekend!
I’ve never heard of dressing for your season! I googled it but it seems overwhelming to figure out which one I am – lol! What did it say you were?
I am a winter! :)
Cursive is out in our (very large) Northern Virginia school district. I taught my children cursive a few Summers ago and they are one of few at their school who can actually READ it and sign their names. One of my son’s teachers had the nerve to say, “We don’t use cursive at ALL in the classroom because 99% of the kids CANNOT READ IT.” SEEMS LIKE IT MIGHT BE RATHER IMPORTANT TO TEACH THEM THEN????
Don’t even get me started… In the age of technology and texting, email, handwritten ANYTHING is dying away fast. Get your kids an inexpensive handwriting book. Do a few minutes after meals in the Summer, and they’ll be on their way to writing in cursive and will at least be able to decipher something they see written in cursive! Please keep cursive handwriting alive!! : )
Seasonal colors is from the 80’s, but I found it helped me buy more wearable clothes.
As for the cook for the week concept, some of the food storage suggestions ignore good food safety practices. As long as you’re careful about that, it definitely works. I started doing it when I was first working and needed to be frugal, but not bored.
I dress my season! I remember my mom having a set of color cards and swatches in the 80s and taking those with her when she went shopping. I recently discovered “Dressing Your Truth” by Carole Tuttle (I’m a type 1 or a Light Spring) and went through the free online course. I loved it so much I purchased the monthly access to her full website. You can do most of it for free though. I was wearing a LOT of black (we live near D.C.) and it just wasn’t “me.” I put away a few of the black / gray items I loved for “just in case,” donated the rest, and found I had most everything I needed to fill my Type 1 wardrobe. Whether you choose DYT or one of the “season” websites, you can also find many resources on the internet and Pinterest to help. I’ve received so many compliments since I really began dressing for my “true” self.
Cursive never left in my part of Pittsburgh.
Plopping is definitely a thing! If you’re interested in even healthier curls, check out the Curly Girl method. There are FB pages, Instagram etc but you can Google it too. It’s basically removing all silicones from your hair products and then specific ways of applying your products that you do use. I’ve been doing it for about a year and my curls are super defined and healthy.
I have a pair of white leather slip-on Keds for summer and I love them! So cute with jeans and a t-shirt.
I really enjoy your Friday posts! I always do a half tuck when wearing tee shirts. I like the look. Also about 30 years ago there was a company called Color Me Beautiful that did color analysis such as you posted above. I am a Winter.
Oh my – I thought Isabelle looked so big in last week’s photo but even more so this week! The boys look cool in the car photos.
As for Keds I have never stopped wearing them! Last year I got a really cute pair of multi fabric slip on Keds and wore them all summer.. Looking to add a new pair for this summer.
I have seen multiple postings on that cookbook – I am intrigued and may have to order it too.
Have a great weekend Michelle!
I can hear good sound thank you so much for sharing nice post.
Keds champion slippons. You won’t be sorry because mom’s hands are always full.

Seasonal color analysis is coming back? I first heard of it about 30 years ago. I’m an autumn.
