Peanut Butter Dog Treats
I usually groan every time I go to PetSmart and look at the price of the “good” dog treats. I mean, buying the “cheap” ones isn’t an option because my dog is a little king and is spoiled rotten. He should get the Snickers of doggie goodies, right? However, I thought it might be fun to try to make some homemade dog treats to see how Einstein likes them. I mean, why should my baking serve just the humans in the house? Einy should reap some benefits as well!
I was going to make some beef-flavored treats, but I thought that Einstein would enjoy peanut butter better since he DOES go crazy for some good PB. These were incredibly easy to make and even more fun since I found a dog-bone shaped cookie cutter in my big set! I ended up with almost 30 treats.

Made These a couple of nights back. My Labrador just loves them! Wrapping up some for christmas for my family’s canine friends.
Thanx this is awesome
Wow! I can’t wait to bake these for my sweet furry friend. I LOVE the photo of Einstein with the paws on the counter. No way my dog would have that much restraint. They would all be gone in the blink of an eye! I bought a doggy recipe book awhile back but have only made one item from the book because all the recipes are complicated. These look so easy and simple to make. My Samba says thanks to Einstein’s mom for these tips!
these sound really good. I will make some for my Jazzi. Feel free to drop by her blog and say Hi!! Lots of dogs on the blogs would be interested in receipes.

Looks great!! how long do they stay fresh??
Hi Kelly, I would say you could put them in the fridge and they’d last a couple of weeks.
I’m glad I found your recipe, I have 3 dogs and I want to make this for them but I just have a question. Can you use regular flour or it has to be whole-wheat?
Hi Maria, Yes you can use regular all-purpose flour, the whole wheat just makes them a little healthier ;-)
Such a cool idea…. I finally found a dog-biscuit shaped cookie cutter at a bake shop, so will be making these the weekend!
I made these treats over the weekend but modified the recipe some (took out the baking powder and added some other ingredients) and Rockwell (our Basset) loves them. Here is what I did…
Peanut Butter Doggie Cookies
Ingredients:
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 cup natural peanut butter
1 cup low-fat milk
1/2 cup quick cooking oats
1/2 cup applesauce
1/4 cup carrot shreds chopped up
1/4 cup cheddar cheese chopped up
Mix all together. Place 1 teaspoon size balls on cookie sheet. Mash with fork (like you would a peanut butter cookie) Bake at 375 for 10-15 minutes. My dog likes his treats on the soft side so I took them out at about the ten minute mark.
Thanks so much for sharing your modified recipe! I am definitely going to make a batch of these for Einstein!
Yes – I thought that baking powder was not good to give dogs. Thank you for sharing this modified recipe!!
My vet said that wheat and dairy are also no-no’s for dogs.
Wheat and dairy aren’t bad for dogs, simply common allergens for them. You could probably find a gluten-free flour substitute and for the dairy do rice milk (a lot of dogs are also allergic to soy products).
My dogs, B and Albert, are chocolate labs that never miss the slight noise of a jar of peanutbutter being opened! They love these treats, and sit patiently hoping for a bite of the dough while I make them. Thanks for a great, simple recipe!
Made these for my pup and she absolutely loves them. Waits at the edge of the kitchen until they’re done!
Great blog, keeping me from working
What a great recipe. I profess to be a non-dog lover but find myself knitting sweaters for my son and dil’s French bulldog and he is a huge fan of peanut butter. These look like they would suit him just fine!
Hey, i heard baking powder is toxic to dogs
yes. baking powder is poisonous to dogs. it causes muscle spasms and in larger amounts causes heart failure. i dont really see why baking powder needs to be included in this recipe. with just milk, peanut butter and flour, the batter should be quite heavy and dense and unlikely to rise much anyway. even though its only a tablespoon and unlikely to cause damage to your pet, i would recommend not including baking powder in future batches or recipes for dogs.
I’d skin thr flour too. Grains really have no business being in dog food or treats.
Baking powder in large amounts is toxic, not poisonous. Chocolate consumption in dogs is poisonous, meaning in any amount, it has the ability to kill a dog and is requires an emergency trip to the vet. However, baking powder in a recipe, especially in the tiny amount in the above recipe is not harmful.
I too am skeptical of including any ingredient that may harm my dog such as leavening agents. I would substitute an egg or two. I live at 6000 feet altitude and I always cut way back on leavening when baking so I don’t think leaving out the leavening would be a problem here.
AWWWWW! what an ADORABLE baby!!!!!!!!! Such a cutie pie! My baby scarlett (lab/shepherd) and I are making these cookies for her doggie relative Nellie for Christmas! We are using snowflake cookie cutters!!!!
Your dog is SOOOOOOO cute! I made this recipe except I added one 4 ounce single serving container of Mott’s original applesauce (which equals a half of a cup) and the “biscuits” turned out soft, which I liked them that way. The vet says applesauce is a good source of fiber for dogs. I put them in celophane bags and printed out a fold-over tag in a dog font that said:
Doggie Peanut
Butter Buddies
INGREDIENTS: Made With LOTS of Love, Chunky Peanut Butter,
Whole Wheat Flour, Baking Powder, Milk, and Applesauce
Then I stapled it shut and gave them to all my “dog” friends. Needless to say, they all went nuts for them!!!!!!!
I definitely like your idea of adding the applesauce to the treats. What’s nice is that this now gives a choice of what the person wants to make and what the dogs wants to eat. My golden retriever Lucy has lots of doggy friends here at the retirement community my family owns and manages and almost all of her friends are so small compared to her they can’t handle the large hard biscuits she likes. I started well over a year ago keeping on hand here at the office the small, mini Milk Bone Treats for them. It also works nicely for Lucy too as she’s on a diet and that tiny milkbone at 5 calories is a good deal lighter than a big full-size Milk Bone treat. AND, I also deal with some of the humans that go with these dogs and some are EXTREMELY picky about what the doggies get and I know the humans would LOVE their dogs getting home made treats. One of Lucy’s friends, a poodle mix named Mona loves just about anything with sweet potatoes and she’s also allergic to any treat that has a colored dye in it. Honestly, sometimes I think many of these dogs have more eating problems than most people I know. Lucy herself has a sensitive tummy. On one of her birthdays I thought I would allow her a special “treat” and let her have just about 100% of a nice steak. All the humans were enjoying their steak dinners so I thought for one time that year I’ll let her eat more than just one or two bites. It was a big mistake and a complete waste of a good rib eye steak. An hour after eating the steak she became sick and the entire thing came back up. So much for that idea. It was just too rich for her and she’s not used to that much “table” food at one time. Other than pieces of white chicken, green beans or carrots served with her kibble she rarely gets ANY people food. I’m always trying to get more veggies or fruit into her as she is the dog version of a “meat and potato man” and normally won’t touch any fruit or veggies. It’s been a real struggle getting her to accept any at all in her food.
I made the peanut butter doggie treats for my shi-tzu pup. She’ll be one on 3/28/09. She really loves them and I also made a batch for my cousins lab puppy.. great idea and good healthy treat!
thanks.
Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! I made these over the weekend in Christmas shapes for my Aunt’s Pit Bull and German Shepard…I’m smiling imagining such big dogs eating such dainty little treats but I think she(aunt) will really get a ‘kick’ out of the whole thing. Thanks again for posting and Happy Holidays!
