Peanut Butter Dog Treats
I usually groan every time I go to PetSmart and look at the price of the “good” dog treats. I mean, buying the “cheap” ones isn’t an option because my dog is a little king and is spoiled rotten. He should get the Snickers of doggie goodies, right? However, I thought it might be fun to try to make some homemade dog treats to see how Einstein likes them. I mean, why should my baking serve just the humans in the house? Einy should reap some benefits as well!
I was going to make some beef-flavored treats, but I thought that Einstein would enjoy peanut butter better since he DOES go crazy for some good PB. These were incredibly easy to make and even more fun since I found a dog-bone shaped cookie cutter in my big set! I ended up with almost 30 treats.

“Can I PLEASE eat them ALL???”

Love making these! Just got a set of dog bone cookie cutters, and they look so amazing when cut out to look like dog treats! Amazing gifts for dog-owning friends!
I made these and gave them to my friends and neighbors dogs for Christmas. Everyone has raved at how much their dogs love them! I love how easy they are to make.
Don’t you think you should remove the baking powder from the recipe. I found your site through Pinterest. Most people aren’t going to read the comments that say baking powder is poisonous to dogs. I googled it and it is poisonous. Maybe the amount in these bones would not hurt most dogs, but it could cause illness in small dogs
Hi Vickie, Baking soda and powder are poisonous to dogs if swallowed in their raw state, in large quantities. A small amount that has been baked into a final product is not harmful. You can omit it from this recipe if you’d feel better about it.
Thanks so much for this recipe! My boyfriend and I played Santa Paws today and made these for the dogs of my neighborhood. It is safe to say that they all loved them! :)
I’m sorry, but I thought wheat wasn’t good for dogs…
I’m really wanting to make these for my two Shih Tzu dog, but I want to make sure all the ingredients are healthy first.
My husky, Aspen, LOVES these!! I have a batch cooking right now and she is laying on the floor right in front of the oven waiting for them! Thanks for the idea.
I keep meaning to make my dogs their own baked treats…but I just havent gotten to it yet. I should just do it because I know my dogs would love them!
I just made these tonight to test them out.. and my dog Harper loves them!! I’m making them as little Christmas gifts in Mason Jars with Chalkboard labels. So awesome Thanks for the recipe!! So easy!
Thanks for the peanut butter biscuit recipe. I’ve been making my own dog biscuits for about 10 years … each new variety has to be approved by my pooch!! Aside from the fact that my dog is my taste tester and is a bit spoiled by always having a supply of homemade biscuits on hand, I also make biscuits when there’s a new puppy in the family or for Christmas or other special occasions. There are many recipes online that you could also try (most include oatmeal, cornmeal, margarine or oil, wheat flour–which I mix with white flour–and bouillion–none of the recipes I’ve used contain baking soda. HINT: Keep baked biscuits in oven overnight to make crispy, crunchy biscuits.).
Sorry to ruin your recipe again but milk gives your dog indigestion and baking powder is highly toxic.
It is my understanding that if raw, unbaked baking soda or powder is ingested by dogs it can cause problems, but that dogs eating something that has been baked with either leavening agent is not an issue.
As for milk, same thing – you don’t want your dogs to drink milk or eat a bowl of ice cream or a hunk of cheese, but a small amount baked into a recipe isn’t going to cause problems unless the dog has an allergy.
It has been brought up that baking powder is toxic for dogs.
It bears mentioning that flour (gluten specifically) is not good for many dogs. I always substitute flour with brown rice flour or ground flax seed or coconut flour or any combination of the three. Gluten intolerance has been definitively diagnosed in the Irish Setter but not in many other breeds of dogs. Dogs, like humans and other animals, can develop a sensitivity or allergy to it gradually through repeat exposure or as an acute reaction to a single exposure. Gluten allergy causes the inflammation and destruction of the interior of the small intestine, thus preventing nutrients and vitamins from being properly absorbed. Moreover, gluten irritates the large intestine, causing colitis, which results in bowel problems.
Best dog treat recipie I have tried yet. I have tried making these with and without baking powder and baking powder doesn’t seem to make much of a difference so if you’re worried it will harm your dog then don’t use it. I also added 4oz of applesauce with the recipie and only cooked them for 15 mins. They come out nice and soft and my chihuahua just loves them!
My vet told me that one of the best things to give my “children with paws” as treats are peanut butter on toast. Cheaper and MUCH MORE healthier than the store bought duck or chicken treats. This looks to be a great alternative and I can’t wait to try it!!!!!! BTW, if anyone has bought chicken treats, make sure they were not made in China…this made my dogs sick and when I researched it on the Internet, I discovered that this treat has been the blame for kidney failure and death in dogs.
Making them today! :) How many does it make?
oops. Never mind!
I just made these for my golden retriever Cooper- he LOVED them!!!!
Gonna make these for my labrador retriever, Lady!!!! Do they work without baking soda/powder? Look great!!!!!
Yes, they should work without, will just be a little thinner. I hope Lady enjoys them! (that was the name of my first dog as a kid!)
Thanks!!!!! How long do the stay fresh?
I’d say up to 5 days or so if you leave them at room temperature, but you can refrigerate them for a couple of weeks (I had a batch get moldy when left out on the counter for over a week.)
Thanks!
I took Jodie’s advice and added some applesauce. They came out nice and chewy. My chihuahua, Brandie, seemed to really enjoy these. Not to mention my house smells like peanut butter cookies. Awesome recipe. By far the best dog treat recipie I have tried (and trust me I’ve tried several).
OH MY GOODNESS!! I don’t believe this sight,it is wonderful!! I must become a member… I have a small dog and am very skeptic as to what is truly in the store bought cookies, treats and chews, this is wonderful as I can learn with your help how to make healthy treats that he will enjoy and truly benefit from..Thank you so much for being here!!!!
I’m a dog walker and decided to make some of this to bring along to work with me. I can’t tell you how much my dog clients loved them! They went nuts trying to get more after I put the bag away in my purse:)
I did leave out the baking soda and added 1/2 quick oats and they turned out just fine. I’ll be making several batches to give out to clients as Christmas gifts. Awesome recipe!
Thanks Nic for sharing your version. I was concerned about the baking soda/powder.
thanks for sharing your version I am going to try it for Lola. no baking powder
I can’t wait to make these for my dogs! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing this treat! Stella was very happy! http://www.twentysomethingstella.com/2012/07/homemade-dog-treats.html
Is it alright for dogs to have almond milk in the recipe? Or can I replace the milk with water?
Hi Ashley, I think either would be an acceptable substitution (or even beef broth).
I have made these so many times already since the beginning of the year! I linked you up: http://www.risashoebox.com/blog/?p=1376. Sometimes I gotta kick the dogs out before they cause a flood in the kitchen…
I was wondering if I can replace the Milk for Greek Yogurt, my dogs stomach will not be able to handle the milk ?
Hi Noreen, I think that would work just fine. Hope the pups enjoy!
I have made these for my dogs twice now and they love them!!! I am going to make these from now on!!
I just made a batch for my pitbull Princess and as she always does she layed on the kitchen floor the whole time i was baking… she loved them :)
I have a recipe for dog/cat treats
2 cups whole wheat flour
1/4 cup corn meal
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
1 egg
1 cup water… mix all the ingredients together except parmesan cheese.
knead dough until completely mixed, roll mixture into 3inch size pencil sticks
roll the sticks into parmesan cheese twist sticks 3-4 times bake at 350 for 25 mins
on a ungreased baking sheet.
Just made these for my two girls for Christmas morning :) They are both plotthound mixes. One is 16 months or so, the other is 3-5 years old (unknown as she was a rescue)
I omitted the baking powder since it is considered toxic to doggies – Instead, I added 1/2 cup of applesauce, a teaspoon or so of water and an extra dash of milk.
Both dogs love them!!!
I baked them for about 10 minutes or so.
Thanks for the recipe!!
These are awesome! I have made them for my families dogs and ours too. My doggie tested these and LOVED them. Thank you for posting. Rosie(our puppy) is giving this as Christmas presents to her doggie cousins :) I was able to make about 53 too! I did little Christmas trees for the holidays! Thanks again!
i am making these for all of the dogs in my family for Christmas… Molly (bluetick coonhound), Bella (italian greyhound), Sandy (yellow lab), Pritzie (maltipoo), Izzy (toy poodle), and Skeeter (italian greyhound). Molly is mine, and she is turning 1 on Jan. 3rd.
