Sweet Potato Pretzel Dog Treats {Happy 6th Birthday, Einstein!}

Today is Einstein’s 6th birthday! I can’t believe it’s been nearly six years since I brought this little furball home with me:

I’ve made a tradition of baking Einstein a special homemade treat for his birthdays, and have chronicled the recipes here for his 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th birthdays. There are a lot of dog treats that include peanut butter, bananas and cheddar ingredients, which I’m sure is in large part due to the fact that most dogs (Einstein included) would sell a left lung for a lick of peanut butter, a bite of banana, or anything cheese-flavored. I’ve made him treats using all of those ingredients in the past, but wanted to try something new this year, and was so happy to come across the “52 Weeks of Treats” e-book filled with tons of tasty homemade dog treats, which is where I found this sweet potato pretzel recipe for Einstein’s 6th birthday.

I love that this recipe only includes a few ingredients and is extremely easy to throw together. If you don’t feel like going through the process of shaping pretzels, you could just as easily roll out the dough and cut out shapes. I also have included substitutions in the recipe below in case your dog has any specific allergies. The recipe includes directions for the smaller sized pretzels, but I made some larger ones as well for the special occasion :)

Einstein kept a close eye on the baking process and then once the candles were lit, he got extremely interested. He sat still long enough for a few pictures, and then was rewarded for his patience with two of the smaller pretzels.

Happy Birthday, little man! Here’s to another fun-filled year of tennis balls, rawhides, sunshine, naps and lots of playing!

Sweet Potato Pretzel Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 1 medium sweet potato, about 7 ounces, peeled and diced
- 1¾ cups (210 g) whole wheat flour
- 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Place the sweet potatoes in a small saucepan, cover with water and place over high heat and bring to a boil. Ensure that the potatoes can be easily pierced with a knife, then remove from heat, drain and allow to cool.
- Puree the sweet potatoes in a food processor until completely smooth.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and flaxseed meal. Remove about 1 tablespoons of the egg to a separate cup.
- Add the sweet potato puree and remaining beaten egg to the dry ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon until a dough forms.
- Dump out dough onto a lightly floured surface. Shape pretzels by taking a small piece of dough, rolling it into a 10-inch rope, shape into a "U", then twist the ends and fold them back over to create the pretzel shape.
- Place the pretzels on the prepared baking sheet and brush with the remaining 1 tablespoon beaten egg. Bake for 25 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool in a wire rack.

Aww…Happy Birthday Einstein. I hope you have a fabulous birthday today and a wonderful year to come.
Michelle….I just love your dog treat recipe you shared from last year….so super easy to make and both of my furry babies love, love, love, love them. Thanks for this new recipe. I am going to have to try it because both of our dogs love sweet things and this would be a good healthy sweet treat for them.
Happy Birthday, Einstein! What a handsome boy!
Have a great Bithday, Einstein! Thank for sharing the adorable pics–what a cutie pie :)
Happy Birthday Einstein!
Aww he’s too adorable! Haha I can’t believe you bake dog treats! Happy birthday Einstein!
I just LOVE your blog!! BEB-you are so wonderful, full of fantastic ideas, recipes and stories!! I always look forward to your posts!! And I absolutely love that you love your dog so very much and take the time to bake for him on his special day!! You’re just wonderful!! :) Happy Birthday Einstein!!
Quick question, do these need to be kept refrigerated or just in an airtight container?
Hi Diane, You could store them either way, but if you don’t think you’ll go through them quickly I’d refrigerate them (or maybe even freeze – keep the pup occupied longer!).
Happy birthday, Einstein!!! People who aren’t “dog people” just don’t understand how much these “furry babies” mean to us. They are literally our children…like a perpetual toddler! I make home made treats for my two, as well as 10 other family dogs and they LOVE them far more than any prepackaged manufactured treats! Can’t wait to make these for my girls! If you want to try a dog-family favorite of ours, check out Olive Oil and Bacon Truffles. I make them sized according to dogs and they fit perfectly inside of a KONG. http://www.rachaelraymag.com/recipes/rachael-ray-magazine-recipe-search/pet-friendly-dog-recipes/jessica-gorman-s-olive-oil-and-bacon-truffles
TOO CUTE! Happy birthday Einstein!
Happy Birthday, Einstein! Harley (Yorkie) and Sissy (Morkie) would love these. We’re getting a puppy tonight (Chopper, Yorkie) so perhaps we will have to make these this weekend to welcome him to the pack.
Happy Birthday Einstein. He looks so happy and content and is so lucky to have you. I can’t wait to bake these pretzels for my sweet Roxy who turned 13 in August. She has been put such a restricted diet due to Kidney disease and misses her treats terribly. All of the ingredients in this recipe are on her “allowed” list! Thank you for sharing.
He is such a beautiful dog. Happy Birthday Einstein!!
These are awesome and Einstein is a cutie! I made my aunt’s dog homemade chicken dog treats and she enjoyed them… I want to try more, but she’s the pickiest dog ever!
Awww … Happy Birthday Einstein!! Here’s to many more birthdays, fun, and mommy treats! :)
Our precious Goldie, Bella, sends her Birthday wishes to you Einstein. You are a handsome fellow. Wishing you many more doggie years of good health., playful romps and good treats!
Oh my word, the picture of him as a tiny pup – it’s the cutest!! Happy Birthday to Einstein!
Happy Birthday, Einstein :)
I was sooo waiting for this post, and it was great!!! Don’t usually have this much smile on my face this time of the morning. Happy B-day Einstein:)
Our Tucker looked just like baby Einstein when we brought him home. That picture is sooo cute. But like Einstein, ours developed the Dudley nose, (we were told that’s what the pinkish hugh on their noses is called if they have it).
That’s so neat that you shaped the dog treat into a pretzel. I’m wondering if our Tucker were here, if he’d have eaten those. He hated real pretzels. It didn’t matter the shape or size; if you tossed him a pretzel, he’d spit it out. His WHOLE life he did this without fail. Thanks Michelle!!!!!
Happy Happy Birthday to your fluffy family member!
Love it!! The beautiful pics of your gorgeous dog, the recipe! You can tell he is well loved! Happy Birthday Einstein!
Ahhhh, Happy Birthday Einstein! He is so adorable! I love when you post about him! The sweet potato pretzel dogs are cute I’m going to make them when I get home from work for my bad babies!!
Einstein looks like a great dog! Happy birthday to him.
Thanks for the recipe. It’s hard to find yummy dog treat recipes that don’t include peanut butter. My son has a peanut allergy and because our dog is famous for her sneaky mouth licks, no peanut cookies are allowed. I am sure Maggie would LOVE a pretzel (or two…).
Happy Birthday Einstein! From the looks of things you are one lucky dog!
Happy birthday, Einstein! He’s such a cutie. Doesn’t the time go by so quickly? I can’t believe my dogs are almost three years old! I think these pretzels may be their next birthday treats too. They will love them. Thanks for sharing!
Happy birthday, Einstein!!!
aw, how cute is this??? I’m glad I’m not the only one who spoils my dog ;)
Happy Birthday kitty hugs from your blogging friends, Yuki, Bianca and Stormi D.
Your mom takes great pix of you and our mom loves her blog! XOXOX
Awww, Happy Birthday Einstein! :)
That puppy picture is just the cutest :)
Happy birthday, Einstein! :) Hope you enjoyed your treat!
Awe!! Happy birthday to Einstein. Such a handsome boy! You know I have a soft spot for doggies. :) I also tend to bake treats for my furry girl on her birthday and I’ve made her sweet potato biscuits before, which she loved. She’s also very happy with anything that involves cheese or peanut butter but, strangely, hates bananas.
