Happy Valentine’s Day!!
You know I love any excuse to decorate some cute sugar cookies and Valentine’s Day is no exception. Back in grade school Valentine’s Day meant filling out Valentine’s cards for classmates and eating ungodly amounts of conversation hearts. They were the “it” Valentine candy. Would a boy give you one that said “Cutie”, “Be Mine” or “Let’s Kiss”? It was anyone’s guess and 10-year old girls’ hearts were aflutter with all the possibilities that the day could bring. Fast forward a couple of decades and I decided a throwback was in order.

I used my favorite sugar cookie recipe and decorated with royal icing (see links for both below under ‘Resources’). I stuck with some of the classic phrases, although forgot on some of them that the words are usually always stacked. Oops! Some details on the tips I used:
♥ I outlined the hearts with a #2 decorating tip.
♥ I piped the words with a #1 decorating tip.
My Valentine more than approved of these cookies
I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine’s Day holiday and enjoy some extra-special love and attention today!

These are so beautiful, Michelle! Such intricate writing you did on them, too. Great job and thanks for sharing! Happy Valentine’s Day!
Love these! They’re on my agenda for next year.
happy v.day michelle!
you rock your posts!
Sugar cookies are my hubby’s favorite, and he asks for them often, yet I end up making something for the kids instead. I think I’m headed here…to tell him how much I love him. Thanks for the cute idea!
These cookies are simply lovely! I adore them!
These came out awesome!
These look so great! I really need to get #1 tip (probably more than one, and some more #2 tips as well) My letters looked really garbled with a number 2 tip. I’m going to need a lot of practice to get mine looking as nice as yours, no matter what tip I use!
What size cookies are these? 2″? 3″? I know you can make them in all sizes, just wondered what size yours are.
So, so cute!
Thank you! They are 3-inch cookies across the widest part.
Super cute cookies! Happy Valentine’s Day!
I simply must make these next year. You forgot one… I saw this last year on a conversation heart: “Tweet Me!”
“you rock” !!
I love the messages!
Love these, I had a friend pass out little bags of these yesterday and I thought they are just the cutest cookies ever!
How cute ever
I love them all !
Love these, especially “You Rock!” I had cookies all made to make conversation hearts last night and NEVER got to them.
Those cookies look delish! Perfect handwriting!
These are gorgeous! I would gladly take one of these cookies over thousands of the little candy pieces.
Aww, these are so cute! I remember those love heart sweets, I wish people still gave these around

These are so much fun! Love ‘em!
You’ve really helped me unedrstand the issues. Thanks.
Wow, these look great! It seems so simple which means it isn’t (for someone like me atleast
). Whenever I see things like this it reminds me how terrible I am at decorating anything
.
Love them! So adorable!!!! Thanks for sharing
Adorable cookies! I was going to make some just like this for today, and ended up entertaining uninvited guests all weekend instead. Enjoy some for me!
Lovely cookies and your *printing* is awesome as are your colour choices.
These are fantastic, Michelle! My kids have been enjoying sifting through their conversation hearts and finding the ones that amuse them the most. They would love these cookies.
Very cute! Love the throwback cookies
Gotta love a good throw-back! These are SO cute!
Absolutely adorable, prefect handwriting!
These are GORGEOUS!
LOVE THE <3's!
Aww these are so pretty! Happy V Day!
Your icing decorating is perfect! Very nice!
Wonderful!
You’re bringing new to old school – love it!
Aw! These are so sweet. Wish I had such a steady hand with the icing! Hope you had a great Valentine’s Day.
I really REALLY wish my cookies came out like this!!! I used your recipe and tips to make the football jersey cookies with royal icing for a Super Bowl party…and I definitely think it’s going to take more practice. Everyone loved the cookies but they looked like they were iced by a child, haha. Practice makes perfect I suppose…absolutely beautiful cookies!
Decorating cookies like that takes some serious talent! Great job
Way better than the candies!
oh my goodness, i loooove these! how cute! i’m not all that into baking but i’d have a blast making these! nice to have found your blog! now following.
Love these cookies, you must have a very steady hand! Since they are the perfect example of a homemade Valentine treat for a basket, I have posted a pic and a link to this page on my valentines recipes page. Hope that’s OK?
Thank you!
Sure thing! Thank you for sharing!
I’ve admired these from the first time you posted, but have yet to copy these. I love the look of royal icing. However, in my opinion, it has a weird taste if not, no taste at all. What do you do to add good flavoring? I suppose addign vanilla or almond extract? Can you add a little butter or cream cheese or will that change the texture?
Hi Theresa, It’s true that royal icing isn’t necessarily the most gourmet tasting thing out there, but it definitely serves its purpose in terms of decorating. You could add a splash of clear vanilla if you wanted, but definitely could not add butter or cream cheese to the mixture, as it would not set up properly.
