Friday Things

Toasted Marshmallows

1. A couple of days ago, I toasted marshmallows and put them in frosting, which I used to fill the best chocolate cake I’ve ever made. Recipe coming on Monday… you don’t want to miss this one!

2. Well, we did it! My Chief Culinary Consultant and I bought a house! We found one that we loved last weekend, put in an offer, and now… it’s ours! We still have a bit of time before we close, but today is inspection day, so we’re excited about going to the house this afternoon and taking some measurements for furniture, thinking through my kitchen organization, and all kinds of fun stuff!

3. On that note, if you see your Pinterest page flooded with home decor and finished basement ideas, they’re likely coming from me. I apologize in advance :)

4. Last week, I had a fabulous steak wrap for lunch at Evolution Grille, which is located in Sarver, PA. It was my first time there, and I can’t say enough great things about the restaurant. If you’re in the Pittsburgh area, I highly recommend it. Amazing food and a great atmosphere!

5. If anyone else is a fellow Golden Girls fan, then you’ll love these cookies by Semi Sweet… aren’t they awesome?!

Golden Girls Sugar Cookies

6. I may have said this before, but it bears repeating… I despise deep-fried soft pretzels. Yesterday marked the 3rd restaurant I’ve been to that has soft pretzels as an appetizer on the menu, makes no mention that they are fried, and then they show up at the table deep-fried. Bleh. I just want a normal soft pretzel!

7. Since I’ll have my hands full with moving and getting situated, I won’t be doing any gardening this year (except for some potted plants, of course). However, for those of you that might be interested, there is a great infographic on square foot gardening over on Frugal Dad. A great resource!

8. It’s March Madness! I totally lost track of time and didn’t get around to filling out a bracket before the games started yesterday. I don’t ever follow college basketball, but once I fill out a bracket I love catching some of the games and keeping track of my progress. Who did you pick to win it all this year?

9. Have you seen any good movies lately? I haven’t been to the movies since November, and nothing has been catching my eye on Redbox or OnDemand. Surely, there has to be something worth watching, right?!

10. TGIF! Have a snuggly weekend!

All I have to say is Go Gonzaga! Thanks for the post BEB!

  3. Averie @ Averie Cooks on March 22, 2013 at 2:07 am

Congrats on the new house!!!!! I love how marshmallows and chocolate cake get slot 1. And the house gets item 2. Priorities, right :)
Deep fried pretzels? I’ve never even heard of that. I think they’d be burned at the stake here in the land of green juices if a restaurant pulled that! haha! Seriously, congrats on your house…I can’t wait to hear about it all unfold!

  4. Ellen on March 22, 2013 at 3:43 am

Whoa, never heard of those pretzels, that’s terrible. The whole point of pretzels is that they are boiled, so they get that skin-deep-frying them is so wrong!

  5. Gerry @ foodness gracious on March 22, 2013 at 3:50 am

Congrats on the house, always exciting! Umm deep fried pretzels…that sounds a little weird but also a little intresting :)

  6. Linda on March 22, 2013 at 4:10 am

Congratulations on the house. Will be waiting for the recipe on Monday.

  7. Jessica @ Portuguese Girl Cooks on March 22, 2013 at 7:02 am

Congrats on the new house!!! Very exciting! Can’t wait for the cake recipe. Have an awesome weekend!

  8. Dana on March 22, 2013 at 7:34 am

Congrats on the new house…very fun! As a seller, inspection day was the WORST; I was so afraid they’d find out the house was crumbling to the ground or needed all new plumbing. Of course, it was fine. :)
I’m so behind on movies. We just saw The Bourne Legacy last weekend. It was okay…definitely not on par with a Matt Damon Bourne flick though. We have Skyfall for tonight.
The cake sounds fab – can’t wait for the recipe!!

  9. Tracey on March 22, 2013 at 7:43 am

Congratulations on your new house, that’s so super exciting!!! I can’t say I’ve ever had a deep-fried pretzel but you’d think that’d be an important distinction to include on a menu… And those cookies? Wow, so, so awesome.

  10. Heidi on March 22, 2013 at 8:06 am

I’m so happy for you. As moving day draws near and then arrives, take a deeeeep breath and then three more! LOL. As for movies, I CANNOT recommend The Sessions starring Helen Hunt and William H. Macy enough. It is the story of a poet/author who has lived the greater part of his life in an iron lung. Struck with polio at age six he lived his life as fully as he was able. In his late 30’s he decided it was time for him to lose his virginity before he died. Helen Hunt is the surrogate/therapist who helps him. I cried the whole time!! It is the most moving thing I’ve seen in a long time. I, myself, am disabled with a husband at three kids. It was wonderful to see a movie that treated the subject with dignity and respect.

  11. Heather @ Sugar Dish Me on March 22, 2013 at 8:14 am

Congratulations on the house!!! We’ve been foreclosure shopping. It’s such a backwards experience. That being said I will totally relish inmy Pinterest board being flooded with home interior ideas. Bring it! Can’t wait for that cake. CAN’T WAIT.

  12. Lisa on March 22, 2013 at 8:16 am

The French film, Intouchables, is on On Demand and is very good.

  18. Berin on March 22, 2013 at 8:57 am

One absolutely great movie to see is Silver Linings Playbook. It was, by far, the best movie we saw last year. It was very sweet, a little manic and it was very touching. They did a wonderful job of pulling you in and making you feel the raw emotions of the characters both with the storytelling and the music that was chosen to help tell the story……it as an. Excellent soundtrack. I can’t say enough about that movie! Sadly, it doesn’t come out until April 30, so you’ll hae to wait a while.

  19. Dawn McPherson on March 22, 2013 at 9:03 am

Congratulations on the house so Exciting! xo

  20. Judy T on March 22, 2013 at 9:05 am

  21. Beth B on March 22, 2013 at 9:20 am

Congratulations on the house! As for good movies: Check out The Odd Life of Timothy Green Even my husband ended up sitting down and watching it!

  22. Rachel on March 22, 2013 at 9:20 am

I saw OZ two weekends ago and loved it! I love Wizard of Oz and this is a great prequel and doesn’t spoil the original production at all. A great movie at Redbox is Pitch Perfect. I’m a band nerd and my boyfriend’s a choir nerd and this movie is hilarious! Fat Amy is my favorite, ‘Why do you call yourself Fat Amy?” “So twig b**** like you don’t say it behind my back” Love it, I’ve already watched it twice!

  23. Mary Lynn on March 22, 2013 at 9:31 am

Congratulations on the house. So happy for both of you…… If you feel the urge to garden, you can come over and plant veggies in our garden… (that includes pulling weeds, too) HA HA Looking forward to Monday’s recipe..

  28. Victoria Leddy on March 22, 2013 at 10:01 am

Last weekend I watched Larry Crowne and it is clever, sweet, funny, and I’m not a big JR fan. I also loved The Descendants w/ George Clooney. Life of Pi was brilliant and shocking with an unexpected ending. Also caught a movie with Justin Timberlake called In Time…pretty interesting and he is just fun to watch. I’m going to watch The Best Marigold Hotel tonight! Have a great weekend and happy house warming!!

Congrats on the new house! Moving is kind of the pits, but the upside is that it is a great time to purge and goes perfectly with the fresh start that Spring brings about! How exciting…BTW, I am constantly flooding everyone’s Pinterest with house ideas- even finished basements, and I live in CALI where most of us don’t even HAVE basements! HA! I don’t know if you’ve seen Lawless with Tom Hardy…but YOWSAS! It’s good and he is great!

  32. Marcie @ flavor the moments on March 22, 2013 at 10:18 am

Can’t wait to see the chocolate marshmallow cake! Those marshmallows look too good. Congrats on your house! That’s so exciting. Getting a new kitchen is the best part, isn’t it? My husband and I got away for a few days and saw two movies! Snitch was the first, with The Rock, which was decent, but Dead Man Down with Collin Farrell was surprisingly excellent! I went in with low expectations knowing nothing about it, and I loved it!

  33. Paula B. on March 22, 2013 at 10:19 am

Happy spring and what wonderful news on the house purchase, let the home-owning fun begin! Movies: Les Miserables was incredible, Identity Theft, a fun romp. New Tina Fey/Paul Rudd movie comes out this weekend, they are both so good. Looking forward to the chocolate cake with incredible frosting.

  34. Kimberly on March 22, 2013 at 10:23 am

  44. Terri on March 22, 2013 at 1:05 pm

Congrats on the house! Hope everything goes well with the inspection. As for pretzels have you ever tried The Pretzel Shop in the South Side? Always worth the trip. If you are looking for an older movie to watch I recommend Strictly Ballroom which is an Australian flick by Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!). Funny, great cast and dancing. Looking forward to Monday’s recipe. Have a great weekend.

    • Michelle on March 28th, 2013 at 12:24 am

Hi Terri, I haven’t been to the The Pretzel Shop, but I’ve seen it. I’ll have to be sure to stop the next time I’m in the South Side. Thanks for the recommendation!

Home buying—exciting times!!! Enjoy it all…even the stressful parts!
Those cookies—ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! An engineer by day? He has got to find a release for his creative genius!!

  46. Linda on March 22, 2013 at 1:23 pm

My husband and I watched Super 8 a couple of weekends ago on Netflix. His pick, but I actually liked it quite a bit. Kind of a twist on Goonies. Spielberg has his name on it, so it can be bad, right? :)
