Friday Things #363
Hello friends!
So, the last week to 10 days has been absolute insanity, am I right? How are you holding up? Are you holed up at home, do you still need to go into work, are you trying to homeschool kids? I’d love to hear where everyone is right now, both physically and mentally.
We’ve been in a self-imposed self-quarantine since last Wednesday, so we are on Day 10 of not leaving our house. The boys’ school closed on Friday along with the rest of the state, but we had pulled them out a few days before that on our own. So, we’ve been here and have been ordering groceries when needed and avoiding anyone outside of our immediate family to try to give everyone a fighting chance at beating this thing. Just taking one day at a time and thankful every morning when we all wake up healthy.
Needless to say, there’s nothing too terribly exciting to report since we’ve been pretty consumed with what’s going on and haven’t left our house. But here’s a peek at what we’ve been doing…

About a week and a half ago, Joseph lost ANOTHER tooth! When he went for a cleaning at the dentist two weeks ago, she said the other bottom tooth was pretty loose and the top two were starting, as well. Crazy!
The kids wore green for St. Patrick’s Day ☘
Since the boys are only in preschool, we don’t have any mandated learning or teaching we need to do, but Dominic’s teacher set up Zoom meetings for the days they would have been in school and they have their 15 minutes of “carpet time” together. They sing their hello and goodbye songs, she taught them a new letter, read a book, and yesterday they did a virtual show and tell. Joseph and Isabelle love sitting in, too 😄
At Dominic’s parent/teacher conference a couple of months ago, his teacher mentioned that he really loved (and is good at) puzzles. After that, he started doing them more at home, on his own, and with ease. This week, he completed a 72-piece puzzle with very little help from me. He’s definitely in the zone with a puzzle (boy after my own heart!).

I’ve enjoyed having the free time to just sit and color with them for an extended time, or build something together, or read book after book, but full disclosure: these are LONG days. The boys are used to having school, Isabelle is used to getting out of the house and running errands, they all miss swim lessons, etc… so it’s definitely been an adjustment as we try to fill the time and keep everyone entertained and happy.
Luckily, the weather has been decent so the kids have been able to spend time outside most days.
We’ve also done a number of baking projects, including chocolate chip cookies, soft pretzels, hot cross buns (testing an updated/improved recipe!), and challah (in order to test a new French toast casserole!). Speaking of baking, I’ve noticed my homemade bread recipes have been getting tons of traffic, likely because so many stores are out of bread. If you’re interested, these are the most popular: my favorite white bread / Italian bread / ciabatta bread.
I’ve thought about my grandma so much this week; she lived through the great depression and never wasted a single thing; she would plan everything around the grocery store sales flyers, kept her freezer and pantry stocked, and would put an item on her grocery list when she opened the last one (not once it was already nearly used up!). She would reuse aluminum foil, plastic ricotta containers, wrapping paper, and anything else she could think of. I have found myself this week rationing paper towels and Clorox wipes, and never in my life did I think I’d utter the words, “well, I couldn’t get regular potatoes or broccoli, but I did get the sweet potatoes that were in my order”. Perhaps it had been naive of me, but I now have such a deeper appreciation for how my grandma lived her life ❤️️
TV Shows to Watch!
We just finished season 3 of The Crown and can we please hurry up with season 4? Love that show! A few weeks ago, someone asked if I had a big list of all the shows that we’ve watched and enjoyed, so over the last week I worked to put all of our favorites into a document for you since I figured everyone might be in need of some binge-watching right about now! You can see it HERE.
And if any of you have any suggestions, we’re still looking for the next thing to watch, so leave recommendations in the comments below!
Sweet Pups
TGIF to you! Our kids have loved playing fetch with the dogs in the house and out in the yard. I hope that you and your family continue to stay safe and healthy and make the most of this time we are all relegated to our own little patch of Earth, xoxo

We recently finished watching “Hunters” in its entirety on Amazon Prime and really enjoyed it. It has some violent scenes but also includes a bit of comic relief, and we thought Al Pacino was very good. The plot is quite interesting. Strongly recommended, without a doubt! retro bowl
You can try the game for kids five nights at freddy’s
Michele, thank you for keeping up the Friday Things posts and the pics of the kids and dogs. They are a bit of normal in a totally un-normal situation and cause instant smiles when I check my email. (The boys are approx. the same ages as my youngest nieces; it’s fun to see the similarities/differences between boys and girls at those ages.)
If you haven’t seen The Stranger on Netflix, you might enjoy that. I’ve adored Richard Armitage since his BBC/Robin Hood days and this is a great vehicle for him. It also stars Siobhan Finneran (from Happy Valley); she was in an amazing show on AcornTV called The Loch, similar in feel to Broadchurch. If you have access to PBS (we have an inexpensive subscription through Amazon), there’s what used to be called a mini-series called Collision starring Doug Henshel from Shetland; he’s a cop reconstructing a fatal, multi-car crash and we’re seeing it from the viewpoints of everyone in the crash. I hear you about Downton Abbey not getting off to a great start, but it does take off a little further into Season One.
Have a great weekend from the deep south Louisiana. Things are crazy over here too and can’t wait for it to end! I also thought about my grandmother because she was always stocked with an enormous amount of toilet paper, paper towels, etc. I now know why she felt that way. Hope everyone stays healthy and thanks for sharing your recipes and family with us! The grocery store shelves are empty, but we can make something out of nothing right!
Long time reader, first time comment-er! Glad you and your family are staying safe.
I’ve been home with my two kids all week and have found this list to be really fun:
https://www.fatherly.com/play/activities/12-ways-entertai-kids-when-theyre-stuck-inside/ Yesterday we did a mystery activity around the house, and today I made a box with only a hand opening and they need to guess what I put inside. Hours of simple fun! Best wishes to you all
Have a great weekend and week ahead. I can’t wait for the hot cross buns recipe!
Thank you for your honest, but positive outlook on our situation right now. Hang in there, we’ll all get thru this!
Today (3/21) at 2pm Eastern, Debbie Allen is going to teach an African dance and ballet class to kids 3-7 on Instagram Live.
Each weekday at 3pm Eastern, the Cincinnati Zoo will be introducing an animal to kids on their Facebook page.
And through the Kennedy Center Education Dept, Artist in Residence Mo Willems will be posting a new Lunch Doodle session at 1pm Eastern, which can be streamed later. Go to the Center’s website and click on Education.
Oh thank you for these! I bet the kids would love watching the zoo!
Thank you for the Friday posts. I always look for to them. Your children are precious. I am still going to work daily as I am a nurse and work in oncology so the patients need us. It is a stressful time for those in healthcare. I have not been able to get to the store but hoping I can find flour and yeast so I can continue to bake, my stress relief. I want to complete your challenge this month. Stay well
So glad you posted Friday Things!
We both are working remotely; we’ve run out to the grocery store here & there, but try to do so at hours when it’s not crowded.
The biggest thing for us with groceries is the produce, & maybe picking up a rotisserie. I was thinking today about ordering groceries, so I’m curious if you’ve had issues with getting fresh fruit.
Glad you & your family seem to be doing well.
Hi Renee, I’ve had wonderful luck getting fresh fruit from Whole Foods via the Prime Now app. I’m not sure if you have a Whole Foods where you live, but I’ve been able to get *most of the produce I’ve ordered. Only thing I haven’t been able to get is broccoli! My kids go through tons of fresh fruit, so I’ve been happy to be able to keep the fridge stocked. Sometimes there are no times available, but I just keep a running list in the app and check back multiple times per day so as soon as an opening pops up I can hurry up and checkout – sometimes it’s a day later for delivery, but still thankful I don’t have to venture out!
Love watching your kids as they grow!
Watched Counterpart on Amazon, really fascinating, and sometimes confusing (there are 2 of each character), but in a good way. Also The Valhalla Murders on Netflix is well-written if you like dark, moody Scandinavian mysteries.
Dirty John on Netflix
Ted Bundy falling for a killer on prime
Titanic blood and steel on prime
I like most of the shows you’ve recommended. I just signed up for a 30 day free trial of Prime and Acorn TV in Canada and looked for The Americans as you’ve suggested it before. Imagine my horror that I have to pay $2.99 for it!!! As I lived in Oz For 30 years, I’m enjoying My Life is Murder. I am thinking about making bread! I’ve only made it twice and wasn’t successful but may give it another try. I’m self-quarantining as I returned from 41 hrs (yes, hrs) in Mexico. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted. Ordering food in is a bit frustrating because there’s always something not in stock but it’s manageable. We will get through this.
My daughter-in-law posted a funny one on FB. “If you hear me talking to myself, I’m having a parent/teacher conference”. She has 3 kids under the age of 6 all at home with her all day. And she works mornings from home.
I love the pix of your kids. Precious!
Try Banshee on Amazon Prime. Sooo good but certainly NOT KID FRIENDLY. Both my husband and I love it. I think there are 3 ( maybe 4 seasons) If you like Blacklist you will both like this show.
I am in No. California and nobody around here can find yeast! Thank goodness I stocked up a few weeks ago when I made your Italian Bread recipe!!! It was great BTW…
Yesterday I made a super easy and tasty loaf of bread in my Le Crueset dutch oven. Really good…great french bread texture. Here’s the recipe:

TV Recommendations:
Been watching Devs & Little Fires Everywhere on Hulu, Startrek Piccard on CBS All Access, The Outsider on HBO, Sex Education on Netflix, Zero Zero Zero on Amazon Prime.
This was really sweet and soothing to read. Thank you.
I love the idea of the kids doing virtual preschool and staying in touch that way.
Stay well!
Yes, we’re holed up at home, school’s closed, everything moved online, husband’s working from home, etc, the whole nine yards. It’s been strange times to say the least. We made our Costco run 3 weeks ago when we started to see the writing on the wall. Our refrigerators and chest freezer are stocked with things we normally eat, we got tp but didn’t overbuy (bc who needs 180 rolls of tp?) and we have a pack of Clorox wipes. The panic and run on tp and other items are frightening but I know there’s plenty of food and supplies out there and it’s just a matter of readjusting the supply chains. I’m hoping things will calm down at the grocery stores soon.
As for our household, we’re slowly adjusting and getting on a schedule: signing in for attendance and online school for my son, right after breakfast, a walk on the treadmill for me, Then chores and phone calls, phone calls and work for my husband. We started family movie night every evening. We’re watching The Mandalorian on Disney+ and will watch Dr. Doolittle and Onward next month. We’re also watching The Outsiders on HBO. My one suggestion while on self imposed quarantine is to keep a regular schedule for yourself and your kids, with set wake up and bed times.
Please be safe and cautious and I have faith this will pass. To paraphrase Dr. Fauci, we’ll be thankful that we’re overreacting. Let’s all stay home and help flatten that curve. 👍
Oh yes, my kids are way too little not to keep on a bedtime schedule! 7pm lights out here! :)
I think we are all self quarantining per government’s orders lol. where are all those meme’s of us, who already worked from home, before this mess. People used to make fun of people working from home but not anymore…i don’t want to hoard food, but i don’t want to go shopping that often, minimizing grocery shopping to 2 or 3x’s a week. where I live i have everything i need. i have not seen lack of anything, even toilet paper! thank God! We are still working out at home or walking outside to get vitamin D. There is another perk of working out at home, all gyms are closed.
Thanks for sharing your list of shows! I agree with so many of them. Based on the ones you listed, I think you’d really like The Killing, Luther, Dr. Foster, Marcella, and Ozark. All were SO GOOD! And if you have HBO, True Detective (Season 1), Big Little Lies, Sharp Objects, and The Outsider were amazing.
Thanks for sharing your life with us! Your children are adorable — little Isabelle is growing so quickly!
I 100% agree with this list and add Veep and The Wire. ☺️
