Friday Things #553

1. Watching this boy do normal kid things will never, ever get old for me. He has gotten so strong since finishing treatment, and the gratitude I have for being able to enjoy a holiday season at home with all of my people under one roof is unexplainable. I will never forget two years ago when we had to spend the first 10 days of December in New York for treatment and scans, and two days after we got home, Dominic was admitted to the hospital here for pneumonia. Then we found out his scans showed a possible spot of progression, so he was switched to a different treatment, which required us to leave again on Christmas Day for another week, and drive back home on New Year’s Eve. I know there are families right now experiencing this same type of December we did; please say a prayer or offer up good thoughts for all of them during this season. It’s so very hard.
2. I finallyyyyyyy finished my Christmas shopping yesterday, phew! Now to wrap! I’m hoping to knock out a big chunk of that this morning before I go volunteer for a class Christmas party this afternoon :)
3. Today is the last day of school before break and everyone is VERY excited for a nice long stretch of time off. Their break always feels like a bit of a break for me, too… no heading out the door early every morning, no homework, lots of snuggly downtime, nothing on the calendar… I’m very into it.
4. A little snippet from a James Clear newsletter:
“Two simple rules:
- You get better at what you practice.
- Everything is practice.
Look around and you may be surprised by what people are "practicing” each day. If you consider each moment a repetition, what are most people training for all day long?
Many people are practicing getting mad on social media. Others are practicing the fine art of noticing how they have been wronged. Still more have mastered the craft of making plans (but never following through).
But, of course, it doesn’t have to be that way.
What are you practicing?”
5. I loved reading through this list >> 50 Things I Wish I Had Started Doing Earlier in Life
6. Christmas is in five days, and I have yet to bake a single cookie! Anyone else? I’m hoping to churn something out today (maybe orange cookies? or M&M cookies?)… the kids are excited to make and decorate sugar cookies over the weekend!
7. I forgot to mention that I finished reading Beartown a couple of weeks ago and really, really enjoyed it. It was some tough material, but a great story. I’m currently on The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez; it’s a light and fun read, though I feel not quite as good as her trilogy that I devoured earlier this summer (Part of Your World, Yours Truly, and Just for the Summer).
8. What did you think of the Yellowstone finale, if you watched? I really liked it, I thought it was a great way to end the show well; however, my husband didn’t like it at all. Would love to hear what you think!
9. Wishing all of you the merriest Christmas and a beautiful holiday week, xo
10. TGIF!ย I’ve never met a dog who could make herself cozier than Judith ๐ฉท

Merry Christmas ๐๐โค๏ธ
Hello, so happy that this Christmas is a more normal Christmas for you and all 3 kids! ย Know it is so wonderful to see them all going & thriving๐โค๏ธ
Hoping each of you have a totally awesome Christmas! ย Was nice to see Duke looking cozy and Alice too๐
Much love and wishes for a Wonderful Christmas!
Jean
I donโt usually make cookies at Christmas, but I often make your maple walnut fudge for gifting, but I didnโt even do that this year. Nor did I make my motherโs fabulous white Christmas cake recipe. I was far too busy with volunteering for various things, I plan to pull back a bit next year so I have time for those things again. So lovely to see Dominic, enjoying sport and other aspects of his life again. Wishing you all a wonderful merry Christmas.
HBO did a fantastic TV adaptation of Beartown!,
Ooooh I didn’t know that, will have to find it!
I LOVE how they ended Yellowstone. ย It made me sad watching them sell things off but how they rectified it was perfect. ย
Merry Christmas to you and your beautiful family! I hope Santa is good to everyone! ย
Thank you, Michelle, for your wonderful blog! I am so thankful for Dominic’s progress. What a strong family you have. Have a wonderful Christmas vacation with the kiddos. I am just starting my Christmas goodies. Santa swirl sugar cookies and maraschino cherry chews today. I also started baking a White Christmas cake today to freeze, then thaw and frost on Christmas eve. First time making it, so fingers crossed.
Have a beautiful Christmas and a blessed New Year!
I haven’t made any cookies yet either, and now I’m wondering if I will at all! ย It’s turning out to be kind of a non-traditional Christmas for me with having some family members who are having health issues right now . . . not sure if the cookie baking would be worth it to feel “traditional” and cozy, etc. or if it would be better to just drop it this year.
It’s so great that you’re having a normal family Christmas this year!
I just wanted to say that I love your blog; I think it was the first one I signed up for MANY years ago. Your recipes are wonderful.
Also grateful for your little snippets from James Clear. His posts are long and in tiny print, and you seem to find the nugget from them. Thank You!
Seeing Dominic in a hockey uniform makes my heart happy. He’s such a strong little guy. Hope your family has a wonderful Christmas.
Michelleโฆ.
My heart beats a bit faster, too, when I see your Dominic laughing, happy & doing โnormalโ activities! God bless himโค๏ธ โฆ& your whole family. Your struggle has been real. Enjoy your Christmasโฆ.๐
And get some cookies baked, girl!! ๐ย
I like the ending of Yellowstone too. It would be interesting to know the storyline if Kevin Costner had not left the show.ย
I have followed your blog for so many years. I love your recipes. Chocolate chip granola is one of our favorites. We make it all the time!!ย
I have enjoyed following your familyโs story and praying for Dominic. Iโm so happy for him and your family being able to enjoy Christmas together at home. We will be spending Christmas in the hospital this year with my daughter. She has a pituitary tumor and will be recovering from her 3rd surgery. It is hard, but thank you for your example in hard times and all of the inspiration you share. Merry Christmas!๐ย
Merry Christmas to you! Thank you for building and maintaining this community. I havenโt baked cookies yet, either. Do scones count?
Merry Christmas to you and your family! Dominic has been such huge strides, he is such an awesome little guy and a true inspiration! I hope you all get to enjoy your time off during the Christmas season and blessings for a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas Michelle and family:)
Such wonderful news about Dominec. God bless you all. My husband just finished chemo. It’s been a hard road but we are hopeful as well. Scans next week. Made the orange cookies and doing your soft sugar cookies Sunday with the grands. Thank you Michelle for sharing your life with us. Reading A Jimenez too.
