Gone to the Dogs
I usually groan every time I go to PetSmart and look at the price of the “good” dog treats. I mean, buying the “cheap” ones isn’t an option because my dog is a little king and is spoiled rotten. He should get the Snickers of doggie goodies, right? However, I thought it might be fun to try to make some homemade dog treats to see how Einstein likes them. I mean, why should my baking serve just the humans in the house? Einy should reap some benefits as well!
I was going to make some beef-flavored treats, but I thought that Einstein would enjoy peanut butter better since he DOES go crazy for some good PB. These were incredibly easy to make and even more fun since I found a dog-bone shaped cookie cutter in my big set! I ended up with almost 30 treats.
Peanut Butter Doggie Bones
Ingredients:
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1 cup natural peanut butter
1 cup low-fat milk
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder. In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk. Add wet mixture to dry, and mix well.
Turn out dough on a lightly floured surface and knead. Roll out to 1/4-inch thickness and cut out shapes. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake 20 minutes or until lightly brown. Cool on a rack and store in an airtight container.
The judge’s verdict:
“Can I PLEASE eat them ALL???”

I keep wanting to make dog treats for my dog. I should try these this weekend!!

Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! I made these over the weekend in Christmas shapes for my Aunt’s Pit Bull and German Shepard…I’m smiling imagining such big dogs eating such dainty little treats but I think she(aunt) will really get a ‘kick’ out of the whole thing. Thanks again for posting and Happy Holidays!

Your dog is SOOOOOOO cute! I made this recipe except I added one 4 ounce single serving container of Mott’s original applesauce (which equals a half of a cup) and the “biscuits” turned out soft, which I liked them that way. The vet says applesauce is a good source of fiber for dogs. I put them in celophane bags and printed out a fold-over tag in a dog font that said:
Doggie Peanut
Butter Buddies
INGREDIENTS: Made With LOTS of Love, Chunky Peanut Butter,
Whole Wheat Flour, Baking Powder, Milk, and Applesauce
Then I stapled it shut and gave them to all my “dog” friends. Needless to say, they all went nuts for them!!!!!!!

I definitely like your idea of adding the applesauce to the treats. What’s nice is that this now gives a choice of what the person wants to make and what the dogs wants to eat. My golden retriever Lucy has lots of doggy friends here at the retirement community my family owns and manages and almost all of her friends are so small compared to her they can’t handle the large hard biscuits she likes. I started well over a year ago keeping on hand here at the office the small, mini Milk Bone Treats for them. It also works nicely for Lucy too as she’s on a diet and that tiny milkbone at 5 calories is a good deal lighter than a big full-size Milk Bone treat. AND, I also deal with some of the humans that go with these dogs and some are EXTREMELY picky about what the doggies get and I know the humans would LOVE their dogs getting home made treats. One of Lucy’s friends, a poodle mix named Mona loves just about anything with sweet potatoes and she’s also allergic to any treat that has a colored dye in it. Honestly, sometimes I think many of these dogs have more eating problems than most people I know. Lucy herself has a sensitive tummy. On one of her birthdays I thought I would allow her a special “treat” and let her have just about 100% of a nice steak. All the humans were enjoying their steak dinners so I thought for one time that year I’ll let her eat more than just one or two bites. It was a big mistake and a complete waste of a good rib eye steak. An hour after eating the steak she became sick and the entire thing came back up. So much for that idea. It was just too rich for her and she’s not used to that much “table” food at one time. Other than pieces of white chicken, green beans or carrots served with her kibble she rarely gets ANY people food. I’m always trying to get more veggies or fruit into her as she is the dog version of a “meat and potato man” and normally won’t touch any fruit or veggies. It’s been a real struggle getting her to accept any at all in her food.

Hey, i heard baking powder is toxic to dogs
Reply
Kevin on February 6th, 2011 at 4:15 pm
yes. baking powder is poisonous to dogs. it causes muscle spasms and in larger amounts causes heart failure. i dont really see why baking powder needs to be included in this recipe. with just milk, peanut butter and flour, the batter should be quite heavy and dense and unlikely to rise much anyway. even though its only a tablespoon and unlikely to cause damage to your pet, i would recommend not including baking powder in future batches or recipes for dogs.

I’d skin thr flour too. Grains really have no business being in dog food or treats.

I made these treats over the weekend but modified the recipe some (took out the baking powder and added some other ingredients) and Rockwell (our Basset) loves them. Here is what I did…
Peanut Butter Doggie Cookies
Ingredients:
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 cup natural peanut butter
1 cup low-fat milk
1/2 cup quick cooking oats
1/2 cup applesauce
1/4 cup carrot shreds chopped up
1/4 cup cheddar cheese chopped up
Mix all together. Place 1 teaspoon size balls on cookie sheet. Mash with fork (like you would a peanut butter cookie) Bake at 375 for 10-15 minutes. My dog likes his treats on the soft side so I took them out at about the ten minute mark.

Wheat and dairy aren’t bad for dogs, simply common allergens for them. You could probably find a gluten-free flour substitute and for the dairy do rice milk (a lot of dogs are also allergic to soy products).

Just made these for my two girls for Christmas morning
They are both plotthound mixes. One is 16 months or so, the other is 3-5 years old (unknown as she was a rescue)
I omitted the baking powder since it is considered toxic to doggies – Instead, I added 1/2 cup of applesauce, a teaspoon or so of water and an extra dash of milk.
Both dogs love them!!!
I baked them for about 10 minutes or so.
Thanks for the recipe!!

Pingback: 4 Ingredient Dog Bones « Do It And How
My vet told me that one of the best things to give my “children with paws” as treats are peanut butter on toast. Cheaper and MUCH MORE healthier than the store bought duck or chicken treats. This looks to be a great alternative and I can’t wait to try it!!!!!! BTW, if anyone has bought chicken treats, make sure they were not made in China…this made my dogs sick and when I researched it on the Internet, I discovered that this treat has been the blame for kidney failure and death in dogs.

Best dog treat recipie I have tried yet. I have tried making these with and without baking powder and baking powder doesn’t seem to make much of a difference so if you’re worried it will harm your dog then don’t use it. I also added 4oz of applesauce with the recipie and only cooked them for 15 mins. They come out nice and soft and my chihuahua just loves them!

It has been brought up that baking powder is toxic for dogs.
It bears mentioning that flour (gluten specifically) is not good for many dogs. I always substitute flour with brown rice flour or ground flax seed or coconut flour or any combination of the three. Gluten intolerance has been definitively diagnosed in the Irish Setter but not in many other breeds of dogs. Dogs, like humans and other animals, can develop a sensitivity or allergy to it gradually through repeat exposure or as an acute reaction to a single exposure. Gluten allergy causes the inflammation and destruction of the interior of the small intestine, thus preventing nutrients and vitamins from being properly absorbed. Moreover, gluten irritates the large intestine, causing colitis, which results in bowel problems.

It is my understanding that if raw, unbaked baking soda or powder is ingested by dogs it can cause problems, but that dogs eating something that has been baked with either leavening agent is not an issue.
As for milk, same thing – you don’t want your dogs to drink milk or eat a bowl of ice cream or a hunk of cheese, but a small amount baked into a recipe isn’t going to cause problems unless the dog has an allergy.

Thanks for the peanut butter biscuit recipe. I’ve been making my own dog biscuits for about 10 years … each new variety has to be approved by my pooch!! Aside from the fact that my dog is my taste tester and is a bit spoiled by always having a supply of homemade biscuits on hand, I also make biscuits when there’s a new puppy in the family or for Christmas or other special occasions. There are many recipes online that you could also try (most include oatmeal, cornmeal, margarine or oil, wheat flour–which I mix with white flour–and bouillion–none of the recipes I’ve used contain baking soda. HINT: Keep baked biscuits in oven overnight to make crispy, crunchy biscuits.).

Don’t you think you should remove the baking powder from the recipe. I found your site through Pinterest. Most people aren’t going to read the comments that say baking powder is poisonous to dogs. I googled it and it is poisonous. Maybe the amount in these bones would not hurt most dogs, but it could cause illness in small dogs

Hi Vickie, Baking soda and powder are poisonous to dogs if swallowed in their raw state, in large quantities. A small amount that has been baked into a final product is not harmful. You can omit it from this recipe if you’d feel better about it.

look cute but rule of thumb for dogs: No Corn, No Wheat, No Soy and no baking powder or baking soda. You should be able to use a gluten free flour and I ‘m pretty sure you can 86 the agent to make them rise. Just no need.
