Homemade Chex Mix Recipe

It wasn’t until this past holiday season that I realized how big of a thing making your own Chex Mix really is. It was somehow off of my radar until then, when I started seeing everyone and their brother on social media swapping homemade Chex Mix recipes. For some people, it’s even a Christmas Eve family tradition. Up until that point, Chex Mix was simply among my favorite car snacks for road trips; something I would buy, not something I ever thought about making myself.

I don’t need too much of a nudge to dive into a homemade treat, so I started churning out batches in mid-December and settled on this combination of seasonings as “the one”. I love the combination of cereals, pretzels and different nuts, but you could absolutely change things up to suit your tastes. I definitely think the addition of some bagel chips or cheese twists would be fantastic. Go wild with whatever you like!

As I mentioned, I definitely got the impression that homemade Chex Mix was a holiday thing, but so far in our house, it has been a year-round thing. I’ve made countless batches since December, and it always disappears in no time. Perfect for trips, picnics, watching a sporting event, or just putting it out to nibble on when company arrives.

Homemade Chex Mix
Ingredients
- 6 cups (186 g) Corn Chex cereal
- 6 cups (240 g) Crispix cereal
- 4 cups (248 g) Wheat Chex cereal
- 2 cups (42 g) Cheerios cereal
- 2 cups (160 g) pretzel pieces
- 2 cups (292 g) peanuts
- 1 cup (129 g) cashews
- ยพ cup (170.25 g) butter, melted
- 4 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon seasoned salt
- 1ยฝ teaspoons (1.5 teaspoons) garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ยฝ teaspoon (0.5 teaspoon) cayenne pepper
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. NOTE: Many readers have had issues with their mix burning at 325 degrees. I haven’t had this problem, but I would recommend baking at 250 degrees F to avoid this potential issue.
- In a large roasting pan, stir together the cereals, pretzels and nuts.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder and cayenne pepper. Drizzle evenly over the cereal mixture and, using clean hands, toss to combine, making sure that the mixture is evenly moistened.
- Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Once cool, store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

I loved this recipe! I was craving Chex mix but didnโt have Worcester or seasoned salt. Made my own sauce with tamari, vinegar and a bit of honey. Seasoned salt was kosher salt with paprika, and white pepper. I have to say I liked it better with the homemade seasoning!ย
Best ever recipe!!
I have been making this recipe for years. Everybody absolutely loves it. It’s the best recipe I have ever found for Chex mix.
Great article, I liked it very much congratulations!! 10524293
I tried this recipe! Amazing!! I had never used Cherri-oโs and it was great!! Thank you!! ย
We tried several versions homemade party mix recipes, but this by far our favorite. The cayenne pepper adds that little extra something special. Everyone always asks what the โextraโ ingredient is. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe!
I always make Chex mix year round but I add other thing to it like : bugles, fritos, cheese-it crackers of any flavor, sometimes oyster crackers, mixed nuts or all walnuts or any nuts. Never use Cheerios because I hate them. I also double the liquid because I use 2 cup of the bugles and 2 cups of fritos, etc. I make a bunch! You can also use Crispix with it. Anything salty can be added.
I only make this from Thanksgiving (October here in Canada) to Christmas as we tend to over indulge on it. ย While no one in my family has gluten issues, I find using various gluten free crackers/products adds an extra layer of crunch. ย I put one cup portions in cute little Dollar Tree containers and my husband passes them out to his customers. ย They start asking about this Chex Mix in September because itโs that good!
This is a great snack. I added gold fish to it for a little something different. ย
Iโm glad I read some comments first and decided to lower the temp to 275. I had to split my batch between two cookie sheets and unfortunately one tray ended up a little on the burnt side. Next time I will definitely do 250 and watch closely/stir every 15 minutes. Also, my husband and I like spicy (like super spicy) food but I wanted to make this snack mix for the whole family. I adjusted the 1/2 tsp of cayenne down to 1/4 tsp and it still had more spice than we wanted. So if you donโt like spicy, definitely skip the 1/2 tsp of cayenne!
