Friday Things #591: A Bittersweet Update
Hello, friends! I hope you have been enjoying a wonderful summer; it seems impossible that it’s already winding down. Last week proved to be a very bittersweet one for our family; this Friday Things will include two big life updates, then we’ll be back to regularly scheduled programming next week. Thank you for being here.

First up, a Dominic update. Last Monday, we traveled to New York for scans after he completed three rounds of just immunotherapy (no chemo). As we were pulling into the parking garage, I received a call from the hospital that the radioactive tracer he needed to receive on Tuesday (in preparation for his scan on Wednesday) wasn’t going to arrive. They said he would still have his scheduled MRIs the next morning, and we would receive more information about rescheduling when we saw his team.
The next morning, he had his brain/head MRI and spine MRI, then we met with members of his team, whose plan was to move his scan to Friday and do a PET scan in the interim on Wednesday morning. We secured a separate hotel for Thursday night, and we were planning to extend our stay until late Friday.
Early Wednesday morning, he had the PET scan they had added, and then we spoke with his oncologist. He said the MRIs looked wonderful and that while the PET hadn’t been read by radiology yet, he had viewed it and said it looked great. As a result, he didn’t feel it was necessary for us to stay until the end of the week for the extra scan and encouraged us to head on home. The next morning, he called with the final PET results and said the scan looked fantastic; neither the PET nor MRIs detected anything active.
He would like Dominic to do three additional rounds of immunotherapy since he said he tolerates it really well and it has proven so effective for him. He said they could be spread out a little more and sees it as pseudo-maintenance. Once those three rounds are finished, he will have a larger workup to move him into actual maintenance. It was wonderful news, and while Dominic (and all of us, really) was hopeful that he was done with inpatient hospital stays, we couldn’t be happier with the results of the scans. We keep pushing forward thanks to the enormous support and prayers we continue to receive ❤️
And now, the bitter part of our week…

A couple of days before we left, Duke didn’t seem to be doing great; he wasn’t eating well and wasn’t as mobile as he had been. While we were away, he seemed worse, and my husband took him to the vet. They spent three hours with him, and the bloodwork they did came back with some concerning results (he had last had routine bloodwork done in the spring, and the results were perfect). They wanted him to get an abdominal ultrasound and referred us somewhere for Friday morning. By then, he wasn’t getting up on his own, he was having accidents, he wasn’t eating, and he was panting a lot.
The results of the ultrasound were devastating… they found a very large mass in his liver, three large masses in his spleen (that the doctor was surprised hadn’t burst yet), and diseased lymph nodes throughout his abdomen. He was clearly in significant pain, his breathing wasn’t right, and they didn’t believe he had much time, so we made the gut-wrenching decision to say goodbye.
It’s been almost 10 years since we said goodbye to Einstein, and this was just as heartbreaking. We brought Duke home as a puppy a week after we got married in 2013, and my gosh, he has just been here for absolutely everything. The kids have never known life without him. I know we have been incredibly blessed to have enjoyed 13 years with him, but that did not make the goodbye any easier. He was such a fantastic dog, so gentle and loving. He howled when the kids cried and was just so excited when everyone came home, and we were all together. It has seemed so quiet and a bit empty in our house over the last week.
He and Judith had the sweetest relationship, and she has definitely seemed down this last week. I realized that it has been nearly 8.5 years since we brought Judith to live with us, and they bonded immediately. From the first few days together, they were always sleeping in the evenings with some part of their bodies touching. This picture was taken just a week before Duke passed away 💔

Thank you for always enjoying pictures and updates of our pups and asking about them, going back 19 years now when I first got Einstein! It makes my heart so happy and makes walking these dreadful days just a bit easier knowing so many of you love them, too ❤️

Deepest condolences on the passing of Duke. It will be a wonderful day when your grief turns into smiles at the memories of the wonderful times you shared with him.
Congratulations Dominic!!! You are a trooper with that smile still intact and that wonderful news that you received and shared with all of us who pray for you.
By the way, you have excellent taste in sneakers, they really are sharp !!!
Michelle – this breaks my heart but like you said, how lucky you were to spend so many years with him. I remember crying reading your post about Einstein and this one is also tough. I hope the kids are handling it ok too; it is so hard to lose a pet.
Such wonderful news about Dominic!! You have been through a lot and I appreciate your vulnerability into your life challenges. I will continue to think of your family as you navigate this challenging time, but am so thankful for good scans!
I am so sorry for your precious loss of Duke! We all love your pups here in our household! May he rest in peace! Fly high beautiful boy!
i’m so sorry for Duke. He’s up above running with all his friends and with Jesus. No more pain.
i’m so happy for Dominic. May our Lord continue to hold his hand.
Be strong.
The news about Dominic is wonderful. Prayers definitely work! I hope each of your children has a great upcoming school year.
Very sorry to hear about Duke. I loved seeing his photos throughout the years. We all share in his loss, especially those of us who have had to say goodbye to our own dogs. They are like family members.
Prayers for your whole family!
Thank you for writing this post.
My eyes filled with tears as I read about Duke. That is so sad. I expect most of us have been through what you’re experiencing. He and Judith sound like such special pals and I love that picture of them with their head touching. Rest in peace, sweet Duke.
On a brighter note, that is wonderful news about Dominic. He is such a cutie-pie and so brave and courageous!
Best wishes to you and your family.
I’m so sorry to hear about your pup…but this photo is a treasure. Goldens seem to be part human don’t they? I’ve never owned one just a mutt who loved to show me his tricks and he’s on his way out soon at the age of 12.5
Wonderful news about your son though. I’ll pray for him and you all that he continues to do well. Thank you for allowing me to take a peek into your lives. Jeanne and Chance
So sorry about Duke. Thank you for sharing you pictures.
That’s wonderful to hear that Dominic is doing so well. Deepest condolences on the loss of Duke. Sending best wishes to the entire family.
Oh how happy I am to hear the wonderful news about Dominic!! That is just incredible. I will most definitely continue to pray for his positive progress.
When I saw the title of the email, I got a lump in my throat because I knew it was probably related to one of your precious fur babies. I still have tears in my eyes and am sniffling as I type this. I just adore the photos of your pups you include at the end of most newsletters. And the last photo you have of Judith and Duke is just beyond special. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers as you adjust to Duke being away on Angel duties in heaven. I know how very heartbreaking that is.
Love and hugs to you all. xoxo
Bravo Dominic! You are doing so well and your medical team seems to right on top of everything necessary to keep you that way.
There is going to be a bit of your life missing with the loss of Duke. Judith will need some extra love and closeness for a time. Perhaps in a year or so a new fluff of gold will come into your lives.
May God continue to bless you and your lovely family.
Hi there, longtime reader and follower.
So, so glad you and your family has gotten promising Dominic news! Beautiful to hear.
And such heartbreaking news of your sweet Duke. He was so well loved by your family, that was evident with every photo or mention of him on your blog. This photo here of your two pups…… beyond words. Truly. Very sorry for you and your family’s loss.

Hugs to you. Duke will be missed a lot. Thank goodness the news about Domenic was good!
I’m glad all is well with your kiddos. My heart is broken for the loss of your dog, that picture you shared of the two dogs really summed it all up. I’ve been following you since you’re very early years, before you were married. And it’s a marvel to witness Life do what Life does.
Sorry! I forgot to add Congratulations to Dominic!
My condolences to you and your family. I remember when you lost Einstein. It was a month after my dog passed. May Duke RIP!
So happy to hear the good news about Dominic but at the same time shedding tears for Duke. I remember when you introduced him to us. You are soooo lucky to have had all of that time with him. One of my goldens almost made it to 7 and the other to 6. We then had a German Shepherd. She died last Sept in her sleep. Just shy of turning 6. We have a Westie now and I hope we have many many years with him. We are thinking about getting him a Golden Retriever brother as soon as things settle down at work.
