The Weekend Dish: 4/22/2017
Hello and happy Saturday to you!
I hope you had a fantastic week and that your weekend is off to a wonderful start. Nothing big planned for our weekend; I have a little baking I’d like to do, and am planning to pick back up with my purging in the kitchen. I’ve been going a drawer or cabinet at a time when I have a few extra minutes (like when I’m waiting for something in the oven!). It feels great to declutter and only keep things that I actually use, whew!
As always, you’ll find a recap of what was posted to the site this week, the most shared recipes, my Sunday dinner menu, and recipes I’ve bookmarked from other blogs. Enjoy!

That strawberry pie is calling my name! I’m tempted to go out and buy the ingredients right now. It’ll have to wait for the weekend, though. I just don’t have the time at the moment. It’ll make a great dessert for dinner with my parents though. Your recipes are always wonderful :)
Thanks so much for the shout out to my cheesecake <3 Happy Monday!
Googled cuteness and there was this adorable younglings!!!!
I don’t think you’ve posted anything yet about this, but I’d be interested in what you end up actually purging from your kitchen. We have just started to do the same thing and sometimes it’s hard to decide to keep something or not. For example, one of the things I got rid of was an ‘escargot serving plate’, yep that’s right. Love them at restaurants, thought why not try them at home. Had for many years and never used it and so got rid of it. Â Then saw them made today on a cooking show today and thought, shoot, why did I get rid of that? Â ;)
Hi Dawn, I think what one keeps in there kitchen is super personal to how they cook – and I say that having helped in a number of kitchens of family and friends! One of the things that has helped me as I have sorted through my house is to keep a “give away bag” in an out of the way spot (mine’s in the garage). Since I purge a little at a time it usually takes a few months to get a full bag. Which means that by the time I get the bag out of my house I usually have had a chance to “need” whatever is in there again, and I figure if I haven’t taken it out then I don’t actually need it!
Hi Dawn, It’s really personal preference. I’ve only kept what I use and love. I read the book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” last year and it really helped frame how I view the “things” I have and whether I really want to keep them or not. For things in the kitchen, for example, have umpteen sets of measuring cups and spoons but I use the same two sets all the time. The others are pretty but not really accurate and I have to hand wash them, so I never use them. Keeping them in the drawer is silly! I do believe in the idea that, if I haven’t used this in an entire year (spanning all seasons and holidays), then it’s not likely I need it. I hope that helps a little bit!
Thanks for a great site!!
My daughter was just diagnosed with being gluten intolerant. This is all new to us and I need recipes for her.. Do you have bread, desserts, and main meal ones that you c an send me? Gluten free things are expensive to purchase and I need help in meal planning.
Thanks for anything you can send me. I know tons of people struggle with this problem and I thought you may be able to help!!! Thanks again. Blessings!!
Hi Carol, I’m sorry to hear about your daughter’s diagnosis! Unfortunately, I really have no experience with gluten-free baking. I know there are now tons of baking mixes and flours that you can easily substitute with (King Arthur Flour and Bob’s Red Mill both make them) and I know Annie’s brand has a lot of gluten-free products, as well. I would probably search out some dedicated gluten-free food blogs, as they would be the experts! I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help!
Iowa Girl Eats is a great site for gluten-free recipes!
