Friday Things

1. My Chief Culinary Consultant and I are officially in our new home! We closed and started moving last Wednesday, so it’s been 9 days now in our new digs. To say it’s been hectic and exhausting is an understatement. We still have quite a bit to move and get organized, as well as some larger house projects, but it’s definitely beginning to feel more like home!

2. I took the above photo of my boxes of sprinkles and chocolate as I was organizing my new pantry. I was doing this before I had even a fraction of my clothes moved. Priorities, right?!

3. Also, if you happen to own stock in Target, Lowes or Bed, Bath & Beyond… you’re welcome.

4. I haven’t done much in the way of breaking in my new kitchen yet since we’ve been living off of leftover pizza, hoagies, food our parents brought us, etc. So far, I’ve boiled water and cooked eggs and sausage. It’s a start! I think my oven needs to churn out a batch of chocolate chip cookies (or a pizza) soon!

5. My sister sent us an Edible Arrangements basket full of fresh fruit (including some chocolate-covered strawberries, pineapple and banana) the first day we were at the house. It was such an awesome idea; if you know someone moving into a new house, I highly recommend it! We didn’t have any groceries yet, pots and pans weren’t unpacked, so it was perfect to just open the fridge and be able to grab some fresh fruit.

6. Have you seen “The Ultimate Office Blooper Reel“? If you were a fan of The Office, you’ll love it. It’s two hours long! It was one of my favorite shows for many years, and I was bummed to see it come to an end.

7. I’ve been searching around for a good dog bed for Einstein. If you have any recommendations, I’d love to hear them! He’s a Golden Retriever, so the bed would need to be available in a large size.

8. Tomorrow is my final beginner golf lesson, where we go out and play nine holes of par 3 golf. I’m excited to play and see how I do…Β Fingers crossed that I don’t lose all of my golf balls in the woods!

9. And then there were four… I’m ready for the Stanley Cup conference finals to finally start! Pittsburgh is taking on Boston… it’s a good thing that Tracey and I like each other so much, or it could get ugly!

10. TGIF! Have a snuggly weekend!

  2. Ieva on May 31, 2013 at 12:35 am

Congratulations on starting to settle in at your new home! πŸ™‚
We have the rectangular Bia Bed for our flatcoat, it’s what our breeders use, too –
Hope Einstein finds a new favorite sunspot or two soon! πŸ™‚

Aww…what a wonderful post! (Your sister rocks.) Thanks for sharing the news and congratulations on your new digs! Hope Pittsburgh does well for ya in the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. And, have fun baking in your new kitch!

  4. Kristi on May 31, 2013 at 1:30 am

Congrats on your home! I’ve always wanted an edible arrangement sent to me, but no such luck yet πŸ™‚

  5. Rosa on May 31, 2013 at 2:24 am

Lovely sprinkles! That is so kind of your sister.

    Happy Friday.

  6. Averie @ Averie Cooks on May 31, 2013 at 2:39 am

CONGRATS!!!! on getting moved in and on your house! What an amazing feeling it must be. Major congrats!
Hockey – my husband is born and raised Chicago guy and I think the Blackhawks are doing well? I pay no attention to it, but he sought out a Blackhawks sports bar here in San Diego yesterday to go watch a game. I guess he may be going to LA to watch a game? So clueless about hockey. I hope your team wins though! πŸ™‚

    Happy unpacking!!!

  7. Jen Hodder on May 31, 2013 at 3:28 am

Hi! Congratulations on your new home!! Our dog Rainey absolutely loves her Comfy Couch Pet Bed from Frontgate – so much so – we ordered her a second one : ) She loves to rest her head on the sides. They keep their shape perfectly and last forever!

  8. LJ Dubois on May 31, 2013 at 4:13 am

Congrats to you and your CCC on the new home! Much happiness and lots of delicious meals there. Have fun watching the Pens beat the Bruins this weekend.

  9. Cori on May 31, 2013 at 5:59 am

    Crongrats on the new house!
As far as the dog bed goes, L.L.Bean has a few styles ranging in size from small to x-large (which a human could sleep on).

  10. Ashley on May 31, 2013 at 6:25 am

We bought a dog bed from Moochie & Co 4 years ago and it’s still in amazing condition. They are pricey, but they hold their shape and as advertised don’t collect dog fur, which is saying something since my doggie lays in it all the time. They have several different materials you can choose from so you can make sure it matches your newly decorated house.

  11. Jessica on May 31, 2013 at 7:02 am

Congratulations on your new house! Love and envy the pantry. Our dog beds are from Drs Foster and Smith. I highly recommend the Deluxe Orthopedic Pad with the waterproof liner. The beds hold their shape really well and the covers are removable and washable and come in pretty colors/patterns. The waterproof covers are a must in our house.

  12. Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers on May 31, 2013 at 7:03 am

Congrats on the new home! Love the organization of your sprinkles and chocolate. Mine are a big bag in my linen closet! I know weird place for them!!

Have fun on your final round of golf! Have a nice weekend!

  13. Kristi on May 31, 2013 at 7:27 am

Congratulations on your new place. L.L.Bean sells great dog beds. Free shipping & a lifetime warranty.

  14. Brigette on May 31, 2013 at 7:33 am

Congrats on the house! We have 3 Foster & Smith orthopedic beds for our lab. . . he loves them and they are big and comfy enough for my kids to lay on, too.

  15. Amy on May 31, 2013 at 7:41 am

Yay! Congrats on the new house! Can’t wait to see what goodies you create in your new kitchen!

I have an 8-year-old chocolate lab. A couple years ago, I invested in an orthopedic, memory foam bed. ( At first, Newman didn’t like the change and didn’t even want to go on it, but once he got on it, he was asleep in seconds. The bed is actually bigger than I realized, and he can sleep in any direction comfortably. It has a denim cover and a waterproof liner too. I highly recommend.

  16. Sarah on May 31, 2013 at 7:45 am

Congratulations on the new house! It’s so daunting to have a blank canvas to work with, but so much fun at the same time! I’ve heard that for dog beds, LL Bean’s are pretty fabulous. I don’t have a dog, so I can’t speak from personal experience, but some of my friends have bought dog beds from them and have loved them.

  17. Jodi Pavlik on May 31, 2013 at 7:52 am

Congrats on the move! Can’t wait to hear about some new recipes that come out of your new kitchen!

  18. Jenny B on May 31, 2013 at 8:06 am

Fellow Pittsburgher here…you should check out the Homegoods in Robinson for dog beds. Last time I was in there, they had an aisle full! πŸ™‚

  19. Elizabeth on May 31, 2013 at 8:31 am

LOVE the Office Blooper Reels.. thanks for sharing!

And your sister’s idea to send over an edible arrangement? BRILLIANT!

As far as dog beds, my mother in law got their lab an LL Bean bed which i saw a couple others mentioned up above.. they love it!

  20. Kristin on May 31, 2013 at 8:32 am

Congratulations on your new home! Our former husky (rest her soul) was very particular about her bed. Anything that had beads, chips or something else inside it that moved and she could dig at, she would dig at the bed and destroy it. Huskies are notorious “diggers”…you should have seen our yard! πŸ™‚ We finally tried the down/featherbed pet beds from You can buy the down insert and then purchase different covers for it which are completely washable. She absolutely loved it and never tried to “dig it up”. Over the years we bought another one…one for our main floor and one to keep in our bedroom for her “bed”. I am happy to say they are still in use 10 years later for our new dog. Those covers have lasted through countless weekly vacuum sessions and many washes. Everything is still original. We bought the large or extra large size for Aurora, but our new pup is only 20 lbs. Doesn’t matter….Yuki curls up in the middle of that big bed and luxuriates. You won’t be sorry. Einstein will particularly thank you as he ages πŸ™‚

  21. Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat on May 31, 2013 at 8:35 am

Congrats on getting into the new house! How exciting!

  22. Linda on May 31, 2013 at 8:55 am

I thought you would be moving and proud you have things going your way. I am a sports fan of just about everything but hockey. This has been a good week for the NBA and the Texas Rangers. Not good for the Rangers but I still watch. My San Antonio Spurs are waiting to see who they will play in the finals but afraid it will not be good for them. They are getting older now. Would love for this group of players to win one more time. Enjoy your new home.

  23. Val on May 31, 2013 at 8:55 am

Our dog loves his Frontgate bed – plus it came with a personalized bone-shaped pillow! Congrats on the new house!

  24. Betsy on May 31, 2013 at 9:06 am

    Congrats on the new house!
Check out Orvis for a new bed for Einstein. They have a great selection for large dogs and older dogs too.

  25. Kathy on May 31, 2013 at 9:27 am

We have purchased several dog beds over the years for our Golden Retriever but he always ends up tearing them apart! I hope you find one that works!

  26. Mary Ann on May 31, 2013 at 9:33 am

Congratulations on the successful move! What an accomplishment!

I see you have your sprinkles in a larger container. My baking supplies are in containers like that, but the sprinkles are in an open one… I’m going to enclose them like you have, good idea!

  27. Lauren on May 31, 2013 at 9:39 am

My golden loves her ortho lounger from
They have so many choices whether your pup likes to lean, curl, spread out etc.

  28. Angel on May 31, 2013 at 9:51 am

My English Bulldog loves this bed and it is large, almost too big for her but she just melts into it.
    Congrats on the move !

  29. Master Chefette on May 31, 2013 at 9:51 am

Congrats on the new house! Enjoy settling in! I love organising kitchen stuff πŸ™‚

  30. Marcie @ flavor the moments on May 31, 2013 at 10:10 am

Congrats on being moved in! Getting organized is tough, but it sounds like you’re doing great! Those edible arrangements are so cute and yummy. Have a great Friday.

  31. Emily on May 31, 2013 at 10:11 am

Glad you are getting settled in your new home! Aren’t sisters the best? We have a dog bed from LLBean that our terrior loves, almost as much as the couch!

  32. gloria on May 31, 2013 at 10:48 am

Congrats again on the move!! I’d love to see a pic of your new kitchen once you are all settled in πŸ™‚
I have an 80lb white lab and got his bed from LL Bean. It’s big and I love it. I have a canvas cover for it that you can take off and wash and the filling is stitched (kind of quilted) so all of the filling doesn’t get stuck in one spot. My dad had a big ridgeback and got him a posteurpedic/memory foam bed that he loved…. if you wanted to go all out πŸ˜‰ and might actually help if he’s older (can’t remember how old Einstein is).
Good luck and have a great weekend!

  33. Ashley @ Wishes and Dishes on May 31, 2013 at 11:52 am

Congrats again on your new house!! I love Edible arrangements…they really are such a great gift!

  34. Kimberly @ Healthy Strides on May 31, 2013 at 12:19 pm

Congrats on the house! Our dog eats every bed so we just get him a nice, fluffy bath rug on clearance. It works.

  35. jyllzie on May 31, 2013 at 12:34 pm

Yay new home! Exhausting but fun…and forces you to purge πŸ™‚
I got our std poodles a memory foam bed at Costco. It is quite large and has bolsters on 2 sides…they like to rest their heads on it…cute! It’s big so I only got one…and it is fun to watch them jockeying for it! (what a mean mommy i am!) Cost: just under $50.

  36. Pamela @ Brooklyn Farm Girl on May 31, 2013 at 12:53 pm

Congrats! Glad to know your sprinkles are in order. πŸ™‚
    Have a great weekend!

  37. Tracey on May 31, 2013 at 1:02 pm

Oh my god, that Office Blooper reel! I had missed that, can’t wait to watch! I am so ready to get this series started tomorrow, and we’ll definitely still be friends regardless of what goes down πŸ™‚

  38. Dawn on May 31, 2013 at 1:02 pm

Orvis has the best pet beds. I have a smaller dog (30 pounds) but they come in all sizes and the wear really well. A bed isn’t cheap, but lasts! The best part is they are washable and the inside can be removed before laundering, and laundered separately or not at all. I have the Fleecelock futon rectangular bed with zippers on both ends. They are also guaranteed.

  39. nessa on May 31, 2013 at 1:18 pm

Congrats on the new home! Hope golf turns out good πŸ™‚

  40. Hayley Hansen on May 31, 2013 at 1:27 pm

Orvis makes fantastic dog beds. I have a flat coated retriever and she absolutely loves them! They last a long time too.

  41. Michelle on May 31, 2013 at 1:53 pm

Congrats on the move. New homes are so exciting and making it your own is so much fun. LL Bean has some awesome dog beds in various sizes, shapes, colours and finishes, and you can even get special memory foam inserts for them. There is even one that is like a little sofa so they have something to lie against. Best of luck with the organizing. Can’t wait for the next recipe!

  42. Nalini on May 31, 2013 at 2:17 pm

Congrats on the new house…coming all the way from South Africa!! We’ve just moved house as well and I know exactly how you feel…exciting, but extremely exhausting at the same time! All the best in your new adventure :-).

  43. Chung-Ah | Damn Delicious on May 31, 2013 at 3:42 pm

Congrats on the new house! And I’m really loving how you organized your pantry. Definitely need to do that for myself – my kitchen is a mess!

  44. Georgina on May 31, 2013 at 4:28 pm

I bought the same Orthopedic bed that Amy recommended (from Amazon) but it’s so thick that my arthritic girl has trouble walking around on it to get settled. We keep it out just in case but she never uses it. Instead, BOTH of my dogs are constantly competing for this one:
When it starts to flatten out I just buy a bag of polyfill from the craft store and add mores stuffing πŸ™‚

  45. Cori on May 31, 2013 at 5:43 pm

The sprinkles shelf looks great! Our dog loves her bumper bed from West Paw.

  46. Barb on May 31, 2013 at 7:21 pm

Don’t spend too much $$ on your dog bed. I have a 90 lb sheepdog, got his bed at Costco for around $20.00. He loves it, and I can take off the cover and wash it when it gets too grubby.

    • Debbie on May 31st, 2013 at 8:01 pm

I love the Costco dog beds! My golden retriever loved them, and my current lab loves them too. The most important thing is keeping them clean, and not having to worry about having the bed/material damaged from too many washings.

    • Kristie on May 31st, 2013 at 9:15 pm

I also recommend the beds from Costco. We’ve had ours for probably 6 years now and it’s held up well. And it was only $20! We got a fancy pants one when we first got our dog and she hated it. Of course.

  47. Katie on May 31, 2013 at 9:42 pm

Highly recommend the LL Bean Dog Couch! I have a 60lb pitbull and he LOVES his bed. It was a little annoying to assemble but it super comfy for him (and me when I lay & cuddle with him). Enjoy the new digs!

  48. Jennifer B on May 31, 2013 at 10:52 pm

Deluxe orthopedic bed from Drs Foster & Smith, definitely. My old lab loved it, and my new one loves it, too. I’ve had the same one for about seven years, still going strong. Einstein will love it!

  49. Annie on June 1, 2013 at 12:17 am

We have two goldens – a 7 year old and a 5 month old and we have tried so many different beds. The extra large LL Bean beds are by far the most durable and loved by our dogs. We have both the regular bed (it’s 5 years old and we’ve only had to replace the stuffing once) and for our bedroom for the older dog we got this one – She loves it. The large works well for her. She is 63lbs now, but at her biggest she was 75lbs and the large was perfect.

  50. Karen on June 1, 2013 at 3:46 am

I keep saving your emails in anticipation of cooking again because we too are right in the middle or actually nearing the end of our moving process! Its been exhausting and I haven’t been reading your postings until now the last night in our home and I can’t sleep!! So thanks for the great recipes! We have two labs and years ago I found their beds on an inflight magazine. They are coolaroo and you can find them on Amazon. They are cots and we have size large for our labs. I like to be able to vacuum under them and our dogs always ate the zippers off our stuffed beds and pulled the stuffing out!! I wasted so much money on stuffed beds. And you can buy the replacement mesh tops on amazon too when they start to stretch out. I’m a big fan! Good luck unpacking…

  51. Kylie on June 1, 2013 at 7:23 am

Congrats! Our husky mix loves her LL bean canvas bed. It’s very durable, comfortable, and easy to vacuum and wash!

  52. Kimmers in the Kitchen on June 1, 2013 at 10:15 am

We have four spoiled pups, ranging from 35-70 pounds. They all love their LLBean dog beds! We have them double-stacked for extra comfort. We originally only double-stacked one bed for our old man dog, but then ALL the dogs wanted that bed. So, each time we visited LLBean at Ross Park, we’d buy another one or two!

One of our dogs has separation anxiety when we aren’t home (read: eats leather sofas and LLBean dog beds), so he stays downstairs with another dog as company. We keep two Kuranda beds (aluminum frames, ballistic material) with blankets on them down there. It keeps our boys comfy and off the hard concrete floor. The Kuranda beds are great because they are good for dogs’ joints, they are cool and comfy for hanging out with you on the patio, there are no ends to grab and chew, and they clean well.

Hope Einstein finds a bed he loves!

  53. Molly @Bakelette on June 1, 2013 at 11:13 am

    My golden loves this one!
We got it in extra large and it is HUGE! Sometimes I lay in it with her just for kicks! I would highly recommend it! Very durable and easily comes apart to clean, my other dog decided to pee on it one day! Fortunately it was easy to clean up!
    Hope that helps!

  54. Jennifer on June 1, 2013 at 9:41 pm

Congratulations on your new home! It is such a big undertaking – exciting and exhausting. Enjoy every moment.
My dog Eli loves his bed from
I loved that we were able to match his bed to our bedroom’s colour scheme. Their products are very well made and are good looking too. Good luck!

  55. Laura Dembowski on June 1, 2013 at 10:39 pm

It’s so exciting to move into a new house. It’s a lot of work but before long, you’ll be all settled and making lots of memories … and delicious food!

  56. Shelly G on June 2, 2013 at 5:47 pm

    Congratulations on the move!
    1. I need two hours set aside to watch blooper reel.
    2. Our dogs aren’t too big (2 corgis and 1 Australian cattle dog) so they either get old pillows of ours or a pet bed from Costco. They smell good in the beginning but our dogs must have a glandular problem and sweat stinky. So for the cost sometimes regular cheap pillows from Target are the way to go.
    3. Hope golf went well. My son’s been playing about 7 years now- he’s 13. His average on the 9 hole par 3 is about 45. He needs to shave some off before high school.
    4. I’m sorry- Let’s Go Hawks! πŸ˜‰ Chicagoland fan here living in NW Indiana

  57. Sandra in Phx on June 3, 2013 at 9:45 am

We bought a memory foam dog bed from Costco for our Great Dane:) He LOVES it (as do the other dogs, much to his dismay!). It was under $50 and it’s HUGE! It has bolsters on two side so it fits perfectly in the corner of our living room.

  58. Donelle on June 3, 2013 at 2:01 pm

So happy for you and your CCC!!!! CONGRATS!!!!

as for dog beds, I purchased the Animal Planet Memory Foam one from Groupon for $25 (they still have them). They are 40inches long and my dog looooooooves it. Also, I purchased a $10 long couch cushion from Ikea’s As-Is section this past weekend (like 5 inches of heavy duty foam and 4 inches of “soft” pillow top kinda stuffing and put it under his memory foam one….total $35 for like a bed fit for a king.
